… WORTH REPEATING ...

Life isn’t about weathering the storm … It’s about learning to dance in the rain!

FROM THE PASTOR … A great big THANK YOU to all of you for your financial faithfulness! The total income to date exceeds our budget anticipations by $711. Remem-ber, we are working with an interim budget to take us through June 30, 2012 when we begin using the new fis-cal year budget term of July1-June 30. Our total income to date for 2012 totals $57,346 while our expenses to date for the year have totaled $55,685. Our income for the month of March totaled $22,059 while church expenses totaled $16,897. Late in March the area experienced a significant wind event which took a number of shingles off the west facing por-tion of the sanctuary roof. We will need to pay close at-tention to that to maintain the integrity of the roof. This information was reported at the April Council meeting.

Dear Friends,

“Alleluia, Christ is risen! He is risen indeed, Alleluia.” This is the opening proclamation we used when we first greeted one another on Easter morning. That proclamation pro-vides we Christians the reason we can celebrate. In this case, the word “can” is appropriate. The situation is not about whether we may celebrate; with Christ’s resurrection we can celebrate. The celebration is so great that it lasts not only for a day. Indeed, the early church recognized that this event is so momentous as to provide the founda-tion for our whole life. Every Sunday, the first day of the week, is a mini-Easter reminding us that the risen Jesus rose on the first day of the week.

Then why don’t we celebrate Easter more often? I’m glad you asked. Actually, as I hinted above, we don’t have just one day of celebrating Easter, we have a whole sea-son. We celebrate Easter by having a sabbath of Sab-baths; that is the Easter season lasts for seven Sun-days. We don’t mark the Sundays that follow Easter as Sundays “after” or “in” but rather “of” Easter. Funny how those little prepositions can be so important. We work with a whole celebration of Easter. Even the major holiday (holy-day) which follows is marked, initiated by Easter. Near the end of May this year we celebrate Pente-cost. The root of the word refers back to its location from Easter. Pentecost comes 50 days after Easter, that is seven weeks (49 days) plus one day. “Penta” as in “Pentagon” as in 5? Get it?

A couple of other seasons of the church, for instance Christmas and Advent, use the same kind of prepositional marker (of) to define the Sundays of their season. But no other season so completely defines our lives. Alleluia, Christ is risen! He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Peace,

… CALLING ALL GRADS ...

TO … Mary DeFelice, Cheryl Kinder, Brita Steyn, Sandy Tucker, Linda Wilson, Susan Bunker-Niles, and Jane Antila for making the palm crosses for our Palm Sunday services.

TO ... Sharon Gesick, Kristine Sandmeier, and Nita Men-veg for creating, folding, stuffing and mailing Spaghetti Dinner flyers to residents in our community. This April event was sponsored by the New Membership Commit-tee.

TO … Peggy Truttman, Nita Menveg, and Pastor Stan for their assistance in printing and folding our Easter bulletins for all four services!

FOR … the anonymous cash gift provided to support our Sunday School Easter Egg Hunt. You know who you are - and your thoughtfulness and generosity are very much appreciated!

TO … all of the wonderful volunteers … the readers, mu-sicians, greeters, counters, communion assistants, ush-ers, acolytes, altar guild group and lay assistants who participated in our Holy Week and Easter services.

TO … St. Paul’s AWESOME Youth Group for the WON-DERFUL pancake breakfast they provided on Easter morning! Did you know that the Easter Bunny and her friends actually visited many folks in our congregation, some who could not otherwise attend church on Sunday? They delivered warm greetings and Easter gifts all day Saturday!

TO … the many, many, many (you get the idea here) WELCA volunteers who helped with the annual Rum-mage Sale on 4/21. We are pleased to announce that WELCA brought in over $2500 (which includes a $400 supplement gift from Thrivent). These funds will be dis-bursed throughout the church and community at WELCA’s June 4th meeting. Hats off to ALL those re-sponsible … for your time, donations, purchases, etc. etc. etc. It was an extremely successful event and indeed a “family” affair!

TO … St. Paul’s Sunday School students for their beauti-ful presentation of The Lord’s Prayer at both services on 4/22/12. The children used sign language to show us the words of Jesus. What a remarkable group of youngsters and teachers/helpers. Thank you for sharing your gifts with our congregation.

… From the Health Ministry Team …

PASS AROUND THE HUGS … you did it!! You opened your hearts and your checkbooks and donated way be-yond expectations to the tune of $1065 and 23 pairs of shoes and socks. The shoppers will be selecting shoes for those still on the list. We will be accepting donation till May 15 since there are still children identified in need of shoes.

UNIVERSAL MEDICATION FORM (UMF) ... We encour-age all of you to complete the UMF and have it with you at all time. This should also be completed for children (include vaccination records. This form will reduce confu-sion, improve communication and safety when visiting your physician, pharmacist and during an emergency. Copies posted on the bulletin board.

FUN / EASY EXERCISES … Carson Aquatic Center on Roop Street just past the Community Center) provides all kinds of opportunities to get those muscles into shape. They have an exercise room filled with state of the art equipment; senior water-walking exercises under the di-rection of a leader in the indoor heated pool, other pro-grams for the younger at heart and body. Check out the schedule you will find one just right for you.

ALERT … I received an email stating to apply flour to treat a hot water burn. This is a ‘NO-NO’ for it will in-crease the risk of infection and delay healing. Better to place the burn area under cool-to-tepid running water for at least 5 minutes; then apply a dry sterile dressing. If burn is severe, seek medical attention. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can reduce the pain and inflammation.

PEDICURE SAFETY … prevent potential infection with the following tips: Schedule pedicure first thing in the morning * Ask if foot bowl has been disinfected for 10 min or more * Don't shave legs (hair removal of any kind) 24 hrs prior * Bring your own tools … emery board, nail buffer, etc. * Is facility clean? Check bathroom; not clean; bad sign * Ask about disinfecting policy * Don't let tech cut your cuticles * Must use pumice stone or foot file not razor or sharp tool * Watch for any irritation/infection fol-lowing pedicure * Most pedicure are perfectly safe; how-ever, it pays to be proactive and protect your feet!

NV STATE MUSEUM FUNDRAISER

March was the date … the Museum was the place ...

for the annual Victorian Fashion Show

Live Music! Fashion Show! Dancing! Food! Wine! Champagne! Raffle!

... and a good time was had by all …

Susan Bunker-Niles portrayed Hannah Keziah Clapp who was awarded the bid to purchase the NV Capitol fence in 1875. A bid of $5,500 in coin for the delivery of the fencing (purchased from Philadelphia, PA, and shipped by rail to Carson City) was the lowest by some hundreds of dollars of those submitted. The cast and wrought iron fence yielded Hannah and her colleague and longtime companion, Elizabeth C. Babcock, a sizeable profit of $1,000.

A bit of myth busting … contrary to the folktale, these pioneer educators and astute businesswomen were only responsible for the fence purchase. Another contractor was awarded the bid for installation; yet another received the contract to lay the sandstone base for the fence.

And, according to the legend, practically everyone in Car-son City was shocked to discover that Hannah Clapp was awarded the bid because the Capitol Commissioners did not recognize her initials (H. K.) and found, to their sur-prise, that they had given the job to a woman! The fact is that the population of the entire county was listed as only 3,222 souls in the 1875 state census. The truth was al-most everybody knew H. K. Clapp!

A MOTHER’S LOVEA MOTHER’S LOVEA MOTHER’S LOVEA MOTHER’S LOVE

There are times when only a mother’s love

Can understand our tears Can soothe our disappointments

And calm all of our fears

There are times when only a mother’s love

Can share the joy we feel When something we’ve dreamed about

Quite suddenly is real

There are times when only a mother’s faith Can help us on life’s way

And inspire in us the confidence We need from day to day

For a mother’s heart and a mother’s faith And a mother’s steadfast love Were fashioned by the angels

MEMORIAL DAY Monday * May 28, 2012

Memorial Day is a holiday which honors all those who have died in military service to our country. Origi-nally called Decoration Day, it started three years after the end of

the Civil War in 1868 when Union soldiers began decorating the graves of those that had died.

It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to honor the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by procla-mation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. It became Memorial Day after the First World War, and it now honors all men and women who have died in military service, in all branches of the U.S. military.

Although practically all states now observe Memo-rial Day (officially changed by Congress from Deco-ration Day in 1967), some states still observe sepa-rate holidays commemorating fallen Confederate soldiers. These states include Georgia, Texas, Ala-bama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Memorial Day became a national holiday in 1971.

ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN FAMILY (ELCA) MISSION STATEMENT

St. Paul’s Lutheran Family’s highest priority is to proclaim the good news of God’s love for all people through the incarnation, death, and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
