Introduction
The Barber-Colman Series 7 establishes a new class of microprocessor basedtemperature controllers. As part of the Series 7 family, the 7EM offers outstand-ing performance features in a cost effective package. Designed specifically forequipment manufacturers who demand tight process control, the 7EM has a va-riety of standard features commonly found as options on our competitors control-lers. NEMA 4X faceplates allow these units to be used in severe conditions. The3 digit display offers complete coverage for extrusion and environmental cham-ber applications without excess cost for unused digits.
The 7EM is easy to configure and use. Even operators without skills in tempera-ture process control or knowledge of PID control parameters can obtain perfectcontrol. For best results in control stability, simply:
• wire the instrument• configure the setpoint and alarm thresholds• initiate the autotune function

External Switch in Series with the Internal Contact
Inductive Loads
High voltage transients may occur when switching in-ductive loads. These transients may introduce distur-bances which can affect the performance of the in-strument. The internal varistor assures protection upto 0.5 Amp of inductive component of the load. Thesame problem may occur when a switch is used inseries with the internal contacts. In this case, it is rec-ommended to install an additional RC network acrossthe external contact as shown.
Relay output wiring must be as far away as possible from input or communication cables.

Introduction
The Barber-Colman Series 7 establishes a new class of microprocessor basedtemperature controllers. As part of the Series 7 family, the 7SL offers safety limitfunctionality in a 1/16 DIN package. Designed specifically for equipment manu-facturers who require high limit safety, the 7SL has a variety of standard featurescommonly found as options on our competitors controllers. NEMA 4X faceplatesallow these units to be used in applications where severe conditions exist. The 2display faceplate allows the operator to configure the instrument with simple, easy to use codes.
The 7SL can be set to either a high or low limit. In addition, the 7SL can be set asa high/low limit which provides two independent setpoints. In this mode, theprocess must be within the two setpoints or the unit resets. A logic input, whichcan be used for remote reset, is optionally available
The 7SL was specifically designed with one optional alarm. This alarm can beconfigured as a process high, process low, band or deviation alarm. As such, thisalarm can act as a process event to begin data acquisition or recording as yourprocess nears unsafe conditions.
The 7SL is easy to configure and use. Operators with no skills in temperatureprocess control or knowledge of high limit control parameters can achieve idealresults. Simply wire the instrument and configure the setpoint and alarm thresholds.

Keyboard Description
Used to manually “reset” control action whenpressed for more than 1 second. When monitor-ing/modifying parameters and during calibration/configuration it scrolls back the parameters.

During normal operation, key is used to changedisplayed information. In calibration, configurationor routine parameter modes, key increases the se-lected parameter.
During operating mode, pressing the “FUNC” keystarts parameter modification.Pressing and holding the “FUNC” key for more than10 seconds initates a lamp test.Pressing the “FUNC” key again ends the lamp test.During configuration and calibration modes the“FUNC” key stores the modified parameter and dis-plays the next parameter.

NOTE: Any external components (like zener diodesetc.) connected between sensor and inputterminals may cause errors in measurementdue to excessive or unbalanced line resistance,or possible leakage currents.
Inductive Loads
High voltage transients may occur when switching inductiveloads. These transients may introduce disturbances whichcan affect the performance of the instrument. The internalvaristor assures protection up to 0.5 Amp of inductive com-ponent of the load. The same problem may occur when aswitch is used in series with the internal contacts. In thiscase, it is recommended to install an additional RC networkacross the external contact as shown.
Relay Output Wiring
The relay outputs are protected by a varistor. Refer to thespecifications for contact ratings of individual relays.

See “Controller Mounting Dimensions” at the end of this section.

greater than 0.5 mA, 5 Vdc.- The instrument needs 100 ms to recognize a

Introduction
The Barber-Colman Series 7 establishes a new class of microprocessor based tempera-ture controllers. As part of the Series 7 family, the 7SD, 7SM and 7SH offer outstandingperformance features in a cost effective package. Designed specifically for equipmentmanufacturers who demand tight process control, the 7SD, 7SM and 7SH offer a variety ofstandard features commonly found as options on our competitors controllers. NEMA 4Xfaceplates allow these units to be used in applications where washdowns and dust condi-tions exist. The three digit display offers complete coverage for plastics, packaging andenvironmental chamber applications without excess cost for unused digits.
These controllers are light and compact (1/16 DIN size). They perform reliably in the mostdemanding applications.
Even operators without skills in temperature process control or knowledge of PID controlparameters can obtain perfect control. For the best results in control stability, simply:
• wire the instrument• configure the setpoint and alarm thresholds• initiate the autotune function
