Explore the places where a king was buried with his treasure, wild ponies roam in the fens, John Constable found his inspiration and where grand houses preside over handsome gardens under huge skies.

Ickworth Be absorbed all day in immaculate gardens and parkland, a Rotunda that houses priceless treasures, and the servants’ basement which tells the story of people who lived and worked there. There are ‘pop-up’ talks, walks and excellent facilities; a grand place for a truly entertaining day out.

Perfect for groups

Top three tours

‘Waterways and wildlife’ Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve

‘Constable at Flatford’ Flatford

‘The good, the bad and the scandalous’ Blickling Estate

Walking under wide Norfolk skies At Felbrigg Hall you can enjoy the two-mile waymarked walk through the Great Wood and parkland, where you’ll see a wide variety of trees of all ages, including ancient beeches, some of which were pollarded in the past. Then head down the road to Blickling Estate where there is plenty of space to explore, including woodland, parkland and farmland.

Year-round colour at Anglesey Abbey Enjoy the vibrant colours of the Formal Gardens, which are planted with over a 1,000 dahlias, and the heady scent of the Rose Garden where you’ll find over 40 varieties. The winter garden has been specially designed with plants that are at their best during winter, when colour is in short supply elsewhere.

Other atmospheric highlights are the walled gardens at Felbrigg Hall and Wimpole Estate, and the Victorian town-house garden with its orangery at Peckover House and Garden. Pictured: Anglesey Abbey, CambridgeshirePrevious page: Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk

Blickling EstateBlickling, Aylsham, Norfolk NR11 6NF

You’ll never forget your first sight of Blickling. Sitting in a magnificent garden within a park is a breathtaking mansion, flanked by ancient yew hedges. Past owners have used the estate as a refuge while performing on the world’s political stage. Philip Kerr, the last private owner, helped shape the National Trust’s history, using his influence to find a way of saving great country houses for future generations to enjoy. Until his death in 1940 he used the house for entertaining his prominent guests; and photographs, sounds and objects help to tell his story. Outside, the formal garden is the result of three centuries of inspired planting, and the gently undulating historic parkland is great for exploring.

Garden best: all year.

What’s new in 2016? Visitor route in the house which brings to life the story of Philip Kerr, 11th Marquis of Lothian, Blickling’s last private owner. Additional rooms open to explore.

IckworthThe Rotunda, Horringer, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP29 5QE

Classical Italy brought to Suffolk. Close to Bury St Edmunds, this estate reflects the Hervey family’s passion for everything Italian, influenced by their European grand tours. The Rotunda is a Neo-classical showcase, intended by the 4th Earl of Bristol to house treasures; indeed an extensive collection of silver contains the finest examples by Huguenot silversmiths. Family history is documented in portraits by artists such as Gainsborough and Reynolds, while in the basement, 1930s domestic service is portrayed through memories of former staff. The Italianate garden mirrors the house architecture, with clipped hedges and Mediterranean planting, while an extensive Victorian stumpery, planted with shade-loving ferns, creates an air of mystery. Parkland walking and cycling routes have pastoral views with ancient oaks. Note: accommodation and dining – Ickworth Hotel (part of the Luxury Family Hotel Group), 01284 735350.

Sutton HooTranmer House, Sutton Hoo, Woodbridge, Suffolk IP12 3DJ

Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, the ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king and his extraordinary treasures were unearthed by archaeologist Basil Brown. These ancient graves kept their secrets for 1,300 years, but what was found here changed our perceptions of the past for ever. The atmospheric burial mounds, breathtaking replica treasures, original finds and reconstruction of the king’s burial chamber bring this fascinating story to life. Edith Pretty’s country house takes you back to that remarkable discovery, while relaxing in true 1930s style. Walks across this Anglo-Saxon landscape offer stunning views over the River Deben.

Wimpole EstateArrington, Royston, Cambridgeshire SG8 0BW

It will take at least a day to discover Wimpole’s acres of parkland, miles of walks, Walled Kitchen Garden and Home Farm. There is also the Hall to explore, where intimate rooms contrast with beautiful Georgian interiors. With its various owners driven by passions and purposeful agendas, Wimpole is both a place to escape to and a place to get involved. We continue the 3rd Earl of Hardwicke’s passion for trail-blazing food production and design, celebrating the estate’s past magnificence and echoing Elsie Bambridge’s 20th-century revival. As owners changed, a roll-call of ingenious architects, artists and landscape designers cultivated magnificence. Wimpole is an ‘all-year-round’ place to visit, reflecting the changing seasons, with something to captivate and inspire all visitors. Note: no group rates on Sundays or Bank Holiday Mondays.

Wicken Fen National Nature ReserveLode Lane, Wicken, Ely, Cambridgeshire

With vast skies above flowering meadows, sedge and reedbeds, Wicken Fen is a window onto a lost fenland landscape. A wealth of wildlife is at home in this important wetland, including rarities such as hen harriers and bitterns, numerous dragonflies, moths and wildfowl. The landscape feels wild, though people have managed it for years, as revealed by the fenman’s yard, windpump and cottage. The Wicken Fen Vision, an ambitious landscape-scale conservation project, is opening up new areas for wildlife and for you to explore. Grazing herds of Highland cattle and Konik ponies help create a diverse range of new habitats. Note: some paths may be subject to seasonal closure.

Sheringham ParkUpper Sheringham, Norfolk NR26 8TL

Using the undulating landscape laid down by glaciers 430,000 years ago, Humphry Repton created views of the North Norfolk coast that can still be enjoyed today. His 1812 design stated ‘Sheringham Park had more natural beauty and advantages than any place he had ever seen’. The Upcher family added an extensive rhododendron collection to Repton’s design, bringing an array of colour to the wild garden in the spring. A walk may be interrupted by the drumming of a woodpecker, the song of skylarks as they spiral above you, or the sound of a steam train travelling through the park.
