June 2014,

Dear 7th & 8th Grade Summer Co-LAB Participant,

We are excited you have decided to join us for the 7th and 8th Grade Co-LAB. As the name implies,

our full intent is to create a powerful learning experience together. The agenda is designed to

maximize new learning and active creation with ample time to draw out the expertise in the room.

The three days have been designed around five primary elements:

Learning Labs that will introduce new concepts

Creation Stations for applying that knowledge with your team or as an individual

Sharing Time for reflecting with peers and revising developing work.

Choice Sessions to select additional areas for learning based on your needs and interests

Feedback Sessions to help the design team understand how best to support your learning going

forward.

We hope you find the next three days together to be a highly valuable team building and learning

experience and we enthusiastically invite you to let us know what we can do to make this time as

useful to you as possible. We will look forward to hearing your ideas.

Highest regards,

The Co-LAB Team

Welcome!

Day Three Choice Sessions

Participants will select the sessions they are most interested in attending by tearing a ticket off at

the registration table on Wednesday (Day 3) for one class for each of the two sessions. School

teams should work together to ensure that each session is attended by someone from their school

and that the information learned is shared amongst the team members.

Social and Emotional Learning in the Classroom - Room 1A (Dr. Kami Hill & Dr. Talia Johnson)

During this session you will learn about and participate in activities to incorporate Social and

Emotional Learning in your classroom. Learn more about developmentally appropriate expectations

and creating opportunities for students to learn and practice self-awareness, self-management,

social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

Windows Tablet Basics - Room 201 (Sarah Trimble-Oliver)

Still a little unsure on how to operate a Windows tablet? Get more comfortable personalizing your

start screen, using the charms bar, adding your GroupWise email account, installing apps from the

Windows store, and learning how to project your tablet screen to your projector screen in your

classroom. Learning 21st century skills will allow you to teach these skills in your classroom.

Blackboard and Google Apps Start Up - CTE (Megan Safko-Preslin; Stephanie Bradford)

Digital age instruction is a step worth taking; it’s the unknowns that give teachers the fear of using

technology. Students are encouraged to build on their 21st Century skills; therefore, CPS has

adopted Blackboard and Google Apps for Education as tools to embrace 21st Century learning in

your classroom. During this session, tips will be shared to start using these two tools successfully in

your classroom.

Teaching in the Digital Age - Banquet Room (Dr. Ellen Maddin)

Technology does not facilitate learning itself; the teacher facilitate the use of quality technology

resources in their classroom. Meaningful resources, enhancing experiences, and interactive

opportunities are created using technology to provide differentiated instruction and student-

centered environments. Start embracing the digital age by learning different technology tools to

create technology-enriched instruction.

Creating Community in the Middle School Classroom - ILC (Joan Pack-Rowe)

Students come to us with many different strengths and abilities; they also come to us with pain and

hurt in their lives. Learn how to create a classroom culture that builds on their strengths and heals

their hurts so that learning can occur. Energizers, team builders, brain gym activities and more are

all part of the planned activities that teaches community-building. Be ready to laugh, move and

have fun.

What causes those thoughts and feelings?

How can I express my thoughts and feelings respectfully?

3. SOCIAL AWARENESS How can I better understand other people’s thoughts and feelings?

How can I better understand why people feel and think the way they do?

4. RELATIONSHIP SKILLS How can I adjust my actions so that my interactions with different people turn

out well?

How can I communicate my expectations to other people?

pectations of me?

Small Group Guidelines (These are great ground rules for all kinds of meetings!)

1. Pay attention to your state of being and to how you are talking and listen-

ing. Notice your own assumptions, reactions, contradictions, anxieties, prejudices and

projections.

2. Speak up. Notice and say what you are thinking, feeling, and wanting.

3. Remember that you don’t know the truth about anything. When you think that

you are absolutely certain about the way things are, add “in my opinion” to your

sentence. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

4. Engage with and listen to others who have a stake in the district. Seek out

people who have different, even opposing, perspectives from yours. Stretch beyond

your comfort zone.

5. Reflect on your own role within the district. Examine how what you are doing or

not doing is contributing to things being the way they are.

6. Listen with empathy. Look at the district through the eyes of others. Imagine your-

self in the shoes of the others.

7. Listen to what is being said not just by yourself and others but through all

of you. Listen to what is emerging in the district as a whole. Listen with your heart.

Speak from your heart.

8. Stop talking. Camp out beside the questions and let answers come to you.

9. Relax and be fully present. Open up your mind and heart and will. Open yourself

up to being touched and transformed.

10. Try out these suggestions and notice what happens. Sense what shifts in your

relationships with others, with yourself, and with the world. Keep on practicing.
