7th Grade Teaching Project at Indian Mounds Middle School
Gen Bus 365: Spring 2008
1. Prior to class, have the teacher do a survey of students to find out the top brands they consume.
2. In class
a. Introductions (1 minute)
b. Give the students some background information on organic foods and pass out handouts (graphs, information on food being tasted, and prices of foods, where we got the food) to students (15 minutes)
c. Taste test: Hand out organic and non-organic versions of chips, fruit juices, soda, and cookies. Talk to the students about which they think is organic, which they prefer, etc. Review the results and the benefits of each option. (20 minutes)
d. Talk about where food comes from and show maps via PowerPoint of where the foods came from (7 minutes)
e. Discuss benefits of organic vs. local food, answer questions, and hand out bags of popcorn from the local Farmer’s market (until the end of class)

How much do you know about your food?
ORGANIC vs. NORMAL (CONVENTIONAL) DIETS:
These graphs show the levels of dangerous chemicals that are inside the children. The amount of chemicals go down significantly, and become almost non-existent while the children are on an organic diet. They rise again rapidly when the children go back to eating non-organic foods.
The Chemicals:
- Malathion and chlorpyrifos:
these chemicals are restricted or banned for home use but are widely used on a variety of crops that Americans eat every day – is this a problem?
Effect on humans:
Eating products that contain a lot of these chemicals over a long period of time can cause damage to the nervous system, reproductive system and other organs, developmental and behavioral abnormalities, and disruption of hormone function as well as immune dysfunction. Doesn’t sound very good, does it?
