Historically Dana Point, the city perched on the high bluffs overlooking the harbor and the coastline—the spot that R. H. Dana called “the most romantic spot on the coast” in hisbook Two Years Before the Mast. Dana Point is named afterthis famous author who told the story of the hide shipmentsfrom the California of the early 1800’s to the east coastfor the leather goods trade. Those were the days of vastranchos around the missions that provided the ship loadsof hides. This trade was dependent upon the local NativeAmericans who worked at the missions and ranchos. Thisculture is the heritage of our area.
Early efforts at developing Dana Point as a city began in the 1920’s, that booming era of the beginning car culture, the glamorous talkies, new found wealth, and general optimism for our future. The most successful efforts were made in Dana Point by a Los Angeles syndicate headed by S. H. Woodruff, developer of Hollywoodland in Los Angeles and, in Capistrano Beach, a development started by Ned
Doheny, son of the oil baron, Edward Doheny. Both groups built houses and commercial buildings but the developer’s dreams were soon shattered by the Great Depression of the 1930’s
All progress in Dana Point stopped until the 1960s when new housing was beginning to be built in various areas of the city and surrounding communities. A movement soon began within those communities to create a city that could govern itself. Eventually, the three communities of Capistrano Beach, Monarch Beach
(formerly a part of Laguna Niguel) and Dana Point came together to create an entity large enough to become a city
resort” atmosphere” that is enjoyed by the community as well as millions of visitors yearly.Dana Point Historical Society
