    Contact Points

    Secular:Introduce a generic idea that all can

    relate to.

    Personal: Introduce specific needs that youraudience faces.

    Biblical: Introduce the people in your lesson whofaced the same needs.

    Textual: Introduce the specific Bible referencethat you will be teaching from.

    The Hook should grab youraudience on four different levels:

    Transitioning from Hook to

    Book The Hook should provide

    a natural transition into thefocus of your lesson.

    To do this, conclude with aclear statement of yourpedagogical idea.

    Sometimes, it can help tophrase it in the form of a

    question that will beanswered later.

    Key: Write it out, word-for-word.

    Through our study of Daniel4, we will see how Gods

    Your pastor calls on Saturday night. The youth

    pastor had to leave town for a family

    emergency, and he needs you to teach the

    youth Sunday School lesson tomorrow. Thepassage the class is scheduled to study is Daniel

    4.

    As a group, develop a HOOK to begin your Bible

    lesson.

    Your group will present your Hook to the class in

    half an hour.

    Topical

    Passage is divided into majorcategories or topics.

    Helpful for passages containinglists or parallel ideas.

    Logical

    Passage is divided according tothe train of thought.

    Helpful for poetry and epistles.

    Sequential

    Passages is divided into majorscenes of the story.

    Helpful for narrative passages.

    Outlining: 1 Peter 3:13-17

    Bible Study Outline

    Peter gives his fellow believersthree reasons not to give updoing right, despite theirpersecution.

    I. Peter describes theblessing being persecutedfor right (13-14)

    II. Peter describes theopportunity in beingpersecuted for right (15-16)

    III. Peter describes theobligation in beingpersecuted for right (17)

    Lesson Outline

    Believers should always standup for whats right, evenunder the threat ofpersecution.

    I. There is a blessing in doingright when persecuted (vv.13-14a)

    II. There is an opportunity indoing right whenpersecuted (vv. 14b-16)

    Who is my audience?

    Convey information?

    Apply a truth?

    Produce a response?

    Lecturing, writing papers,

    and multiple thoughts andpoints are ways of myculture. Incessant talking,taking notes, and linearthinking is my culture. It is

    not how native peoplelearn, remember, processinformation.

    Lecture

    A prepared presentation bya single speaker.

    Often incorporates other

    methods such as stories,illustrations, and visuals.

    Strengths:

    Can cover much material.

    Speaker controls direction ofclass.

    Weaknesses:

    Can easily lose attention.

    Requires significantpractice.

    Storytelling

    Creatively presenting truthin story format.

    Much overlap with lecture.

    Strengths:

    Appeals to senses andemotions.

    Maintains attention.

    Weaknesses:

    Difficult to use for somepassages.

    Participatory Drama

    Acting out the Bible as agroup.

    Similar to storytelling, but

    with group participation.

    Strengths:

    Engages audience.

    Hands-on learning.

    Weaknesses:

    Can be expensive.

    Requires muchpreparation.

    Breaking into groups of 3-4to study the Bible in detail.

    Strengths: Involves passive students.

    Moves focus away fromteacher.

    Weaknesses:

    Difficult to supervise.
