containscarbon monox- .._'.Lk"...1_b'.'...;.__,@_r_._ide, a deadly gas. Breath-ingcarbonmonoxide can .,_,'*.._.t_Ll_'JV_._=%'_;.'_.._.,;

•-.<_'<._ ._..:_cause headaches, _.:.__-.)_. WDI_;_._,..:..i. ."dizziness, drowsiness, "__:'-*" " "":Z_"nausea, confusionand "_ll_l_ _eventuallydeath,

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gaswhich may be present even if you do not see or smell anyengine exhaust. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide cancollect rapidlyand you can quickly be overcome and unableto save yourself. Also, deadly levels of carbon monoxide canlinger for hoursor days in enclosed or poorly-ventilatedareas. If you experience any symptoms of carbon monoxidepoisoning, leave the area immediately, get fresh air, andSEEK MEDICAL TREATMENT.

To prevent serious injury ordeath from carbon monoxide:

• NEVER run engine indoors. Even if you try toventilate engine exhaust with fans or open windowsand doors, carbon monoxide can rapidlyreashdangerous (evels.

• NEVER run engine in poorty-ventilatedor partiallyenclosed areas such as barns, garages, base-ments, carports, under dwellings, or in pits.

• NEVER run engine outdoorswhere engine exhaustcan be drawn intoa building through openings suchas windows and doors.

B. Avoid Gasoline Fires

Gasoline (fuel) vapors are highlyflammable andcan explode. Fuel vapors can spread and beignited by a spark or flame many feet awayfrom engine. To prevent injury or death fromfuel fires, follow these instructions:

• NEVER store engine with fuel in fuel tankinside a building with potential sources of ignitionsuch as hot water and space heaters, clothesdryers, electdc motors, etc.

• NEVER removefuel cap or add fuel whenengine is running.

• Allowengine to cool before refueling.

• NEVER fill fuel tank indoors. Fill fuel tankoutdoorsin a well-ventilatedarea,

• DO NOT smoke while refuelingtank.

• Use only an approved red GASOLINE containerto store and dispense fuel,

• DO NOT attempt to pourfuel from engine. Emptyfuel tank by running engine.

C. Transporting Engine

DO NOT transportengine withfuel intank. Fuel vapor orspilledfuel may ignite.

D. Avoid Other Fires

To reduce the risk of fire, keep all materials that can bum, includinggrass and leaves, away from muffler and the rest ofthe engine.

E. Stay Away from Hot Surfaces

The mufflerand other engine partsbecome extremely hot duringoperationand remain hot after the engine hasstopped. Toavoid severs bums oncontact, stay away from these areas.

F. Do Not Modify Engine

To avoid serious injury or death, DO NOT modify engine inany way. NEVER tamper with the factory setting of enginegovernor. Running the engine faster than the speed set atthe factory can be dangerous and will VOID THE ENGINEWARRANTY.

G. Avoid Accidental Starts

To prevent accidental startingwhen workingon equipment, always disconnect spark plug wire and keep it away fromspark plug by attaching it securely to grounding post.

VI. Stopping Your Engine and

Short-Term StorageStop engine according to equipment manufacturer's instmc-tions.

I__ Never store the engine with fuel in the fueltank inside a building with potential

sources of ignition such as hot water and space heaters, clothes dryers, electdc motors, etc.

VII. Maintenance and Adjustments

I_1_ To prevent accidental startingwhenworking on equipment, always discon-

nect spark plug wire and keep it way from spark plug byattaching it securely to grounding post. See Figure 11.

The mufflerand other engine partsFJ__ become extremely hot duringoperation

and remain hot after the engine has stopped. To avoidsevere bums on contact, stay away from these areas.

A. Checking and Changing Oil

To avoid engine damage, it is important to:

1.

2.

• Check oil level after every 5 operatinghourswhenengine is warm and before each use. See "CheckingOil Level" instructions.

Change oil after first 2 operatinghoursand every 50operating hours thereafter; more often ifoperated inextremely dusty or dirty conditions. Engine shouldstill be warm but not hot from recent use.

Be sure you find the correct drain plug location ifpresent. (See equipment manufacturer's instructions).See Figure 12.

Disconnect spark plug wire and keep it away fromspark plug by attaching it securely to grounding post.See Figure 11.

3. Make sure the gas cap is on and is tightened securely.

4. Clean area around oil drain plug. See Figure 12.

5. Place approved recyclable oil container under oil drainplug, tipping engine to position the oil drain plug at thelowest point on the engine. (See equipmentmanufacturer's instructions).

6. Remove oil drain plug and drain oil. See Figure 12.

IX. Preventing Forest, Brush andGrass Fires

Local, state and federal laws may require use of a sparkarrester to prevent fires. For example, it is a violation ofCalifornia Public Resources Code (section 4442) to use oroperate engine on any forest-covered, brush-covered orunimproved grass-covered land unless engine is equippedwith a spark arrester. Spark attester must be maintained ineffective working order by owner and/or operator. To determine if your engine has a spark arrester, locate themuffler on your engine. For example, the muffler dischargewill have a spark arrester cover that reads "TecumsehScreen Type 36085".

If your engine does not have a spark arrester, you maypurchase one from your Authorized Tecumseh ServicingDealer. In some cases the muffler may need to be replacedto allow the spark arrester to be installed.
