Parry Jon Brannon, organ along the journey… Report from the American Baptist Biennial Mission Summit in Portland, OR: Thomas and I were honored to represent FAB at the Biennial. Thanks for sending me! We found the landscape and the people of Oregon just beautiful. As newcomers to the ABC, we tried to soak up every minute of the experience. From orientation to worship to workshops to the Exhibition Hall, we felt welcomed and excited about being part of this story. Below are some of the highlights, but suffice it to say that we both came home with our hearts full! The American Baptist story is deep and wide: With 200 years of mission service and a powerful commitment to Matthew 25’s call to serve the “least of these,” the ABC, past and present, truly inspired me. The church that ordained me is ABC and I am delighted to be reconnecting with the strong, global witness of the ABC. New friends, old friends: Charleston Baptist Temple’s Senior Pastor, Jim Hewitt, and Youth and Children’s Pastor, Charlene Hewitt, his wife, were also present as new ABC folks! We met people from all over the United States, Puerto Rico, Haiti, and numerous other countries. I ran into a few old friends from Duke Divinity and past ministry life—and they introduced us to their friends, creating an ever-widening circle of sisters and brothers in Christ. ABC worships with our whole selves! The music, prayers, and preaching were phenomenal, led by people from so many different backgrounds and accents. A sermon by a Native American pastor was punctuated by the ululation cries unique to her people group, reminding me that “in Christ there is no east or west.” Prayers in Spanish, English, and Chinese all wove together in praise to our barrier-breaking God. From jazz to gospel, country to classical to contemporary, music filled the room and our hearts. It was a “preview of the Kingdom of God,” as Rev. Dr. Sharon Koh, International Ministries Executive Director described. FAB has a role to play. FAB received an award for the third largest United Mission giving totals! The first was a church from Puerto Rico; second was a multi-lingual church in Chicago. Our strong giving makes possible the many vibrant ministries and missions I heard about all weekend! Thank you for your generosity! Images and thoughts from numerous sermons and Bible studies are still rolling around in my head and heart. I’ll be reaping the rewards of the Biennial for months to come and thank God to be part of both FAB and the ABC. With gratitude, Alicia Due to summer vacations the Columns will skip next week. This issue contains both weeks’ information. “On a Boat, In a Fish, Under a Vine: What Jonah Learns About God” Sermon Series, July 16 – August 27 INTERGENERATIONAL MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES As part of our Visioning Process, the Vision Team identified FAB’s sense of family as one of our core strengths. “On a Boat, In a Fish, Under a Vine:

What Jonah Learns About God”

Sermon Series, July 16 – August 27

INTERGENERATIONAL MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES

As part of our Visioning Process, the Vision Team identified

FAB’s sense of family as one of our core strengths. Building on this

strength, the Adult Education Commission is offering several

intergenerational opportunities for discipleship and ministry:

The Pray for Me Campaign: “An intergenerational prayer

ministry mobilizing adults from every generation to

intentionally begin investing in the lives of teenagers” and

children through the most basic Christian act: prayer.

Details: Youth/children will be partnered with two to three

adult “Prayer Champions” who will commit to pray regularly

and intentionally for the student throughout the school year.

Sign ups will begin soon for students/families and for Prayer

Champions. We’ll partner up at a Pray for Me Lunch after

church on Sunday, September 10.

Heart to Heart: A ministry of encouragement that helps

develop supportive, prayerful friendships between older and

younger women, based on the wisdom of Titus 2:3-5. Sign ups

will begin soon!

Details: Interested women will sign up and be paired by the

Heart to Heart Leadership Team. A kick off coffee will be held

on a Saturday in the Fall. Jennifer Farrar and team will lead

this ministry.

Men’s Prayer Breakfast: The much beloved Men’s Prayer

Breakfast will return this Fall! This intergenerational time of

prayer and fellowship (and lots of good food!) will meet

monthly on Saturday mornings this Fall. Todd Taylor, John

Hayes, and Bret Hensley will lead the way!

Senior Adult Trip to Noah’s Ark and

Creation Museum Trip Dates: September 19th and 20th

AEC is planning a trip for senior adults to visit

both Noah’s Ark and the Creation Museum. Our ad-

venture departs on Tuesday September 19th at 6:00am

with our return set for Wednesday September 20th at

9pm. The trip cost, for senior adults, is $125, which

covers venue tickets, hotel stay with double occupan-

cy, and transportation. Other adults are welcome to

join us at a cost of $145. Trip costs not covered in-

clude: two lunches at museums and two evening din-

ners at restaurants.

To prepare for this adventure, Rev. Alicia Porter-

field will lead three Sunday Bible Studies on Septem-

ber 3rd, 17th and 24th at 9:30am in the Friendship

Classroom. All are welcome!

Informational flyer packets have been shared with

all Sunday School Classes. For questions concerning

this event, please contact Pam Morrison by text or

email, [email protected] or 304-638-6431.

Please join us on this adventure!
