Village rebuildBy BOB FOXEditor

Work has started on allied projects that will rebuild Silverstream Village over the next two years.

Key projects on the Whiteman’s Valley Road site opposite Silverstream School will be:

• A New World supermarket double the current size

• A major expansion of the Silverstream Health general practice

• Expansion of Inform physio

• A brand new state-of-the art veterinarian clinic for PetVet

• Relocation of Silverstream Kindergarten to a Kiln Street site next to Foodstuffs that will enable them to double the current role

• More car parking will eventually surround all elements of the development.

Health Centre work started last week, as did the demolition of existing houses on the Kiln Street property to where the kindergarten will shift. ‘Fletcher’ signs are already on the fences as the one house was re-located, brick houses levelled. With off-street carparking at front and properly landscaped grounds, the relocated kindy is scheduled to be ready for Term One 2012.

That clears the way for the new supermarket to be built behind the existing New World. With that complete, the Whiteman’s Valley road frontage under the supermarket will be turned into carparking.

Foodstuffs (Wellington) Co-Operative Society property manager Mark Lash is talking with architects about possible changes following discussions with all neighbours of the new complex. Mr Lash confirmed Foodstuffs has acquired and adjusted landholdngs to make the

project possible.

The Upper Hutt City Council voted at its last meeting to sell the paper road Eustace Lane to Foodstuffs, who have made land ‘adjustments’ made with the owner of the Village Centre, pharmacist Doug Fargher

“We’re still in the early stages of supermarket planning,” Mr Lash said, “as we are still changing drawings with the architects as a result of neighbour feedback before we go into the consents process.

“But work has started on the new kindy site.”

In other words, the first domino has fallen.

Projected completion date for the New World project is December 2012, less than two years away, but the consents process will be the final arbiter.

Marko Kljakovic and Doug Fargher need help from some of their best customers while the building projects roll along - parking is going to be at a premium.

Already 12 parks outside Silverstream Health have been lost to the expansion, with short-term spaces already under pressure from long-term parkers.

“it’s difficult, we don’t want to kick them out because they

are very good customers of ours, and of the supermarket,” Doug said.

The Village car parks are for shoppers, and are not an extension of the Park & Ride system for Silverstream rail.

“Could they just help us out, do ya think?”

Staff at both Silverstream Health and the Pharmacy have already been asked for their co-operation and the pair intend to approach the Upper Hutt and Greater Wellington Regional councils for possible alleviation.

Mary Archibald has lived in Upper Hutt for 40 years – her passion has always been for arts and creativity beleiving that art is good for the soul, and life is art, or is it that art is life?Mary opened Archibald’s – The Art Place, a shop that now sells a wide range of art and craft supplies, gifts, cards, decorating materials, as well as offering personal plate painting, cake tim hireage and more, in 1990.Her art school started in 1994 and continures today, having gone from strength to strength through the years. A related stone carving symposium is now held annually at Maiestone Park. Attracting carvers nationwide it has been running for 16 years.Mary’s art gallery was introduced in 1996 to display students’ work and to exhibit and encourage emerging artists. As a second term Upper Hutt City Councillor, Mary is pleased to be able to work for the Upper Hutt

community with more knowledge and confidence in the issues she feels strongly about.Mary is an accomplished artist in her own right and currently has an exhibition at Expressions. Now a mother of four adult daughters and 12 grandchidren Mary is proud to have spent the past 40 years in Upper Hutt and happy to be spending this chapter of her life in the city she loves.

Why I love Upper Hutt

Mary says: Upper Hutt really is a great place to live, work and enjoy life. Our air is fresh and clean, our landscape is open and beautiful. I have a business where we meet and serve creative people from the truly novice to the professional and that in itself shows the diversity of Upper Hutt. Upper Hutt is a place of parks, rivers, walk and cycle ways and we have so many clubs that there is something here for everyone. In Upper Hutt we host so many cultures and living styles – it is people that are important in life and we have so many wonderful people here who I am priviledged to know. I love my house and

garden, my family and friends, my work, my environment. Why would I want to live anywhere else? I am proud to call Upper Hutt my home.

Favourite Place to ShopMary says: Archibald’s of course. It has everything I need. Fantastic cards for all occasions, gifts for the people in my life and obviously all my art needs. Exciting, new and extended lines are being introduced this month. For my house and garden I love shopping at Resene, Parapine, Upper Hutt Produce and Mitre 10 Mega…..yeap, they are my favourite shops.

Favourite Place to EatMary says: I love entertaining at home as well as enjoying a meal with family and friends. The “going out” places in Upper Hutt are so varied that its good to have such choice. China City is a regular Sunday night with friends spot. Curry Worx is often a Wednesday Butter Chicken Lunch with the shop girls or a special night out. Café Romeo and the Mayfair Café are close for great coffees. The Tradional Thai and the Fig Tree are simply delicious places to eat…. we are spoiled for choice.

Favourite Place to Take Visitors to the CityMary says: I enjoy walks in nature. Kaitoke Waterworks is pleasant and popular for walking and a picnic. Expressions Mt Marua Gallery is definitely the most frequentd place at the moment as my work is there during April (please visit – it’s free). Efil Doog and Staglands are well worth the drive up the Akatrawas and a must for out-of-town people or those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of a visit. Wear comfy walking shos and you will be happy for hours.

Favourite thing to do with family/friendsMary says: Just enjoying company, conversation, good food and lots of laughs. Time together with people – it doesn’t matter where this happens, at home or at one of the places I’ve already mentioned. I do like visiting Maidstone Max with the kids and I must remember the skating rink in Goodshed Road on a Saturday afternoon, next time the grandies stay.

We have it all in Upper Hutt!

An architect’s perspective of how the eastern face of the expanded Silver-stream Health Centre will look when complete about August. Below, collabo-rators GP Marko Kljakovic (left) and pharmacist Doug Fargher – working to-gether for their community.

By BOB FOX

GP Dr Marko Kljakovic and pharmacist Doug Fargher share a common medical ethic; they believe in personalised, quality care for their patients.

“We’ll help them, if they help themselves,” said the former Upper Hutt general practitioner who has resumed practice after recovering from horrific burns in a flash fire in a house he was renovating in Wellington. It was touch and go.

Back after recuperation, Dr Kljarkovic bought back the then Radius Medical (Silverstream) from its former corporate owners.

Already it is possible to see a doctor on the same day – if not always your own GP – and they offer three late nights each week for commuting patients.

The practice outgrew the building.

“We’ve got people working out of supply rooms, workstations in the staff cafeteria. We are totally constrained.”

Immediate work is the extension of the whole front of the practice out to the same line as the adjacent physiotherapy clinic and gym, with the Inform Physio later extending to the Whiteman’s Valley Road frontage.

Already, Silverstream Health

now has six GPs, some of them part-time, and have begun training a GP registrar on the year-long specialist GP training course provided by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.

“We’re going to be part of the devolution of secondary services down into primary care, former hospital-only services that will now be provided in the community – at a fraction of the cost.”

He instanced GPs with appropriate training performing minor orthopaedic work as general practices embrace future health models that will be very different.

“We hope to have visiting specialists consulting at Silverstream, and I would like to see a concentration on maternity as part of our community life. We plan space for midwives, where they can be part of the community team.”

Practice nurses are being upskilled as well to carry an expanded role and Dr Kljakovic hopes to have their first Nurse Practitioner specialising in primary care on staff in 2012.

The rejuvenation of the Village started as just that, but Doug Fargher admits it has snowballed, “and it’s rolling pretty fast.”

The Government is very keen on community services delivering appropriate health care.

“Here we are,” he said. “We’ll have the bigger general practice, the pharmacy, the physio, the dentist, the veterinary practice.”

Setting up Silverstream for the medical future

And the post office, travel agent, real estate, the bakery and Charltons, the pub. What more

could you need?

An X-ray facility? Doug Fargher says that’s on his long term plan.

“Wow and thank you!” says Upper Hutt’s new Gluten Free Bakery owner, Lee Hamilton. “Thank you for the fantastic support,” she says.“I’ve been inundated since the Upper Hutt Star featured my business Ancient Grains recently – I have been baking till 2am every day.“To keep up with demand – and get a little sleep - we will be closing Mondays. Please bear with us while we fine tune the process in order to keep up with demand,

“The response has been humbling. I really appreciate the support of my home town customers and the support the Upper Hutt Star has offered was fantastic for a new business,” Lee says.Ancient Grains, a dedicated gluten and wheat free manufacturer, is at 687a Fergusson Drive (next to the Tiki Dairy). “I am so glad to be able to be here cooking tasty food for those on a gluten free diet – I am having so much fun seeing the enjoyment on people’s faces,” Lee says.

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONJoan and Tom Odlum were Hutt Gables first residents. After moving into their brand new monolithic villa around 10 years ago, they quickly got their gardens underway and in 2004 won the best small garden in the Upper Hutt Garden Competition. The following year they won the Best Garden Under 5 years.Recently they have taken cuttings, dug up roses and basically transferred their garden into pots so they can move it next door. And then after winter they plan on moving it back again. What’s more they say by 2012 they will have it looking as good as when it won the garden competition.Joan and Tom have transferred their garden because they are the first Hutt Gables owners to have their villa reclad in traditional weatherboard after “systemic leaking” problems were discovered in 2009.They want to save everything they can so that its not damaged in the building process. Then put it back again.

“We know it won’t be exactly as it was, but we are taking the chance to make improvements we wouldn’t otherwise have been able to make,” they say.“Its all positive.”“We are just so pleased that Hutt Gables owners, Oceania Group have been so responsible and have decided to reclad all the villas at no cost to us. It’s lucky we are in a complex like this.“It is something we could never have done ourselves, so it’s a great relief to have it all taken care of,” they say.The 27-villa village was built in 2001. In 2008 Oceania Group bought the complex and started making long awaited improvements. In late 2009 it became apparent that 15 of the villas – the monolithic clad ones had leaking problems.Oceania called in nationally recognised experts and on the basis of their report, realised they needed significant work done. They bought back two villas from owners moving into their rest home facilities and arranged for the villas to be stripped back so they could

see the extent of what they were dealing with. When the villas were opened up it was discovered that a total reclad was going to be needed. So Oceania Group decided to reclad the two villas then use them as accommodation for residents while the other villas were being restored.Work has just been finished on villas 2 and 3, so now the residents will move out of their villas – two villas at a time and into villas 2 and 3 on a temporary basis while work is being done on their own homes.Oceania is fronting up with the total $3 million it will cost.“It’s not costing residents a cent,” says General Manager Marketing and Village Operations, Jeremy Leach.“That’s one of the benefits of being in a retirement village, rather than in your own unit in the community – it’s the operators costs and we pay for that,” he says.

“If they were living in the community not only could there be costs involved in the work, they would have the stress of organising it and the cost of having to live somewhere else while the work is done. This way residents are having minimal hassle – it’s all arranged for them, including temporary accommodation.“We think its really important to the residents that they can stay in the village where they are comfortable.“We are really proud of the facility – it is a positive community these days and it wasn’t always that way,” he says.Residents agree.“Since Oceania took over we have finally got an onsite manager, a new community centre, nurse clinics and when this leaking problem was discovered, Oceania handled it all very well we are all very happy,” says Tom.Each villa will take two to three months to reclad. As first residents

Tom and Joan are lucky to be first into the temporary accommodation and expect to be back in their own villa after winter – just in time for spring planting.Residents and Oceania have agreed on a programme of replacement with oldest resident, 97 year old Ella Craven getting her villa reclad early in the piece and some of the younger residents whose villas don’t show any signs of leaking agreeing to go last.

Hutt Gables first resident, Joan Odlum in front of one of the recently reclad villas. She will move her award winning garden to this villa while her villa (rear) is reclad. Than in spring she’ll move it back again.

Potted gardens will ease remedial work

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONWhile other teens are sleeping in and “hanging at the mall” over the April holidays, a group of Hutt International Boys School teens and staff will be in the Cook Islands helping others.Fifteen students and three staff leave next Friday (April 15) on an International Service trip to Mangaia, Cook Islands.  They will spend most of the two week “break” there returning on April 27 just in time to be back at school the following Monday. The focus of their trip is to help out Mangaia School by donating goods doing physical work at the school. They will be laden with all manner of “goodies” for the school including:- four guitars (two with electronic pick-up), an auditorium sound system (with two cordless microphones and two clip-on microphones, a wireless presenter, four computers and software for use in manipulating digital images, two video cameras with tripods and bags, a colour printer and extra toner cartridges, a still camera, a multimedia station (containing overhead projector, laptop, dvd player, amplifier and speakers for a ‘single plug-in’ easily maneuverable device for use in classrooms or auditorium), computer switches, a file server, 30 USB flash drives (4GB, for the teaching staff in Mangaia), enough pens for all of the staff and students at Mangaia School, 500 blank recordable DVDs, wall cabinet, shelf units, cable ducting, extra cable (for setting up and tidying up computer rooms), 10 volleyballs, two nets and several rugby balls, soccer balls and basketballs.Once they get all

this equipment to the school the boys will be busy with a variety of jobs including creating a computer room and installing computers and a computer system, tidying up the school’s current computer facilities, painting, repairing, digging soak pits, concreting, putting a ceiling in a small classroom, sanding and varnishing tables. They will also donate some medical equipment to the local medical centre. Some of this has been donated and the rest bought by HIBS.All the goods have been paid for from school fundraising – about $30,000. The boys pay their own air fares.

Off to spend their April “break” helping a school and Medical centre in the Cook Islands, are: Back row from left - Josh Nouata, Shaun Alaifea (staff) Nick Fargher, Campbell Mackie, Reuben Teo, Jay Mills, Mike Hutchins (Staff). Second row - Simon Barnes, Karen Churchward (staff) Matt Ihaka, Ben McConnell, Nick Young. Front row - Jono Cruz, Tory Hansen, Ryan Cullen, Blair Eastwood, Daniel Carew. Absent - Joel Duffy.

HIBs team off to help in Cook Islands during term break

Age is no barrier for 95-year-old Anne Hearfield (left). Since January she’s been working out at the gym every week alongside people quarter her age.She loves it and can already see the results.Anne has always been physically strong and active, in her younger days she loved tramping – complete with heavy backpack. Now she walks with a stick – and she wants to abandon it. Even if she can’t she wants to keep her body mobilised and upright and keep her strength, fitness and flexibility into her 100’s.Each week she works with Upper Hutt’s Configure Express manager and personal trainer Monique Ballinger.Together they do functional exercises including using bands, balls and sitting exercises.“This will keep her muscles strong and help her maintain her mobility,”

Monique says. Anne also does exercises at home between her visits to the gym.“There are things younger people take foregranted like getting in and out of a chair easily and being able to walk upright not stooped, but as the body gets older unless the muscles are used it will adapt,” says Monique.“Anne has already noticed she is getting stronger. She doesn’t look or feel 95.”Anne is not the only older lady training at Configure Express. The gym has two-month memberships for women 70 or over. “I have one 87-year-old who has been renewing her two month membership for four years now,” Monique says.“I also work weekly with an 83 year old who looks 73. Age is but a number. I love working one on one with these older ladies,” Monique says.

There’s no stopping Anne at 95

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONWhen Kelvin and Barbara Watson went shopping at Mitre 10 Mega Upper Hutt in January they were in a hurry so nearly didn’t fill in a competition entry form…..Lucky they did because they have just won a $20,000 Mitre 10 Mega Shopping Spree. They are now looking forward to buying a new engineered stone kitchen bench and updating their bathroom. They also intend to help their adult children update their bathrooms. The Whitby couple own a rental property three blocks away from Upper Hutt’s Mitre 10 Mega and were shopping for a long list of items when asked by staff member Katherine Chan, if they wanted to enter the National Competition. Because they were in a hurry they said no they didn’t have time.Katherine offered that if they filled in their details she would do the rest, so they did. “We are very greatful to Katherine for going above and beyond her job and helping us enter, if it wasn’t for her, we wouldn’t have won the major prize,” Barbara says.“Katherine is typical of the staff at Mitre 10 Mega in Upper Hutt – they are all so helpful and they all have a good depth of product knowledge,” says Kelvin.“That’s why even though we live in Whitby we choose to shop at Mitre 10 Mega Upper Hutt.“On that particular day it was our local hardware store – but we always come to Mitre 10 Mega anyway,” says Kelvin.

“As former business owners we appreciate that it is New Zealand owned and we like to support New Zealand owned companies.

“What’s more Mitre 10 Mega and Petone are owned by a Hutt Valley man so it truly is a local business and so shopping there keeps the money in the local community,” he says.

The Watson’s have three years to spend their $20,000 but they are pretty confident, its not going to last that long.

When they were phoned with the good news by Mitre 10 Mega Upper Hutt and Petone Marketing Manager, Paul Hammond, the couple couldn’t quite believe it.

This promotion ran throughout all the 25 Mitre 10 Mega stores nationally for the month of January.

There were around 300,000 entries nationally.

“We were thrilled when we heard that an Upper Hutt store customer was the winner,” Paul says.

“With five Mitre 10 stores in Auckland and a lot of the population there you would expect that a large percentage of national wins would go there but we have been able to give away a Cabots Island Holiday to Rarotonga, two cars last year and another car in 2008.

“It’s good to hear Kelvin say that he believes our staff have a good depth of knowledge because we strive to ensure they are well trained and make sure they can give customers skilled and the very best of correct advice.”

It’s a heavy cheque, but a breeze to spend: After shopping at Mitre 10 Mega Upper Hutt Barbara and Kelvin Watson pictured are winners if a national Mitre 10 Mega $20,000 shopping spree. They are pictured with (from left) Mitre 10 Mega Upper Hutt and Petone CEO, Stephen Nelson, the local staff member responsible for their winning entry, Katherine Chan; Mitre 10 Upper Hutt and Petone’s Marketing Manager Paul Hammond and Upper Hutt store Manager Paul Berney.

Somebody’s got to win it

Mt MaruaThis Is Something SpecialSituated in one of the Wellington Region’s finest subdivisions this home pays homage to the established native bush landscape that surrounds it. The well-appointed interior complements the solid and well crafted exterior providing the owners with the comfort of knowing it will stand the test of time. Designed by Wellington Architect Michael Melville of CGM Architects, 32 Mt Marua Way is a contemporary split level dwelling with a long singular roof line that reflects the gentle slope it is sited on. The car parking pavilion allows views through to the valley beyond. Eventually the landscape will grow up and around the pavilion and it will recede back into the bush.

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONSt Patrick’s College Senior Dragon Boating crew Poseidon 25 are the Wellington Secondary Schools Boys A Grade Champions. They were the fastest team at last month’s Wellington Regatta, with a final time of 1:14.3 but couldn’t compete at the National Champs a week later, despite earning their place, because the school doesn’t own IDBF approved paddles. The team, consisting of Haize Alatipi, John Bailey, Patrick Carson, Jeremy Clegg, Joshua Dewar , James Gillespie, Johnny Huynen, Richard Kibblewhite, Caleb Ladbrook, Regan MacDonald, Arana Morehu, Carlin Nisbet, Ben Patterson, James Perkinson, Benjamin Phillips, Zachary Press, Henare Royal, James Sheppard, Sean Stack, Joshua Stephens, Shale Tangianau, Jake Thompson and Aidan Woodward are hoping someone will sponsor them so they can compete next year.At the Wellington Secondary Schools Regatta Poseidon 25 won all their races and had the fastest time of the day winning the Boys

A Grade final by half a boat length over Wellington College and Scots College. It was the first time they have won the final – “a great pay off for all the hard work and determination,” says Acting Rector, Tony Giles.“But that made not being able to go on to the Nationals even more disappointing,” he says.In fact it was the second regatta the team had won this year, having earlier triumphed in the Wellington ‘Funday Festival’, beating a number of adult teams including the Wellington City Council and the Army,” Mr Giles says. Again at that regatta they had the fastest time of all competitors.Planning for success started last October when the team met with staff member and highly experienced paddler, Bjorn Agnew and set themselves the specific goal of winning the March regatta. They started a disciplined programme of aerobic and anaerobic training, initially six times per week, increasing that to eight times per week this year. A large part of their training hinged

around correct nutrition, with planned diets to ensure that, come race day, they would have the stamina and energy required. “The victory happened because of 134 trainings focussed on an achievable and realistic goal. A perfect synergy of preparation and execution that may have looked effortless to those watching, but was in fact anything but,” Mr Giles says. “The challenge I set the boys was to transfer this attitude to their academic

studies. In his book ‘Bounce’ the British author Matthew Syed exposes talent and natural ability as factors in success as a myth. Rather, focussed practice, what Syed calls ‘the 10,000 hour rule’ is the only thing that leads to mastery of any particular activity. So, to become better readers,

boys must read more (as girls do). To become better mathematicians or scientists, boys must engage more, work harder and with greater application. Practice does make perfect! “ he says.Anyone who can help with sponsorship is asked to call the Rectors Office on 9394224.

Poseidon 25 up national creek without appropriate paddle

St Pats Dragon Boating crew Poseidon 25 are across the line ahead of Wellington and Scots Colleges ion the Wellington Boys A championships.

While it was a tight squeeze, the pool was full of team spirit and support as all 13 Upper Hutt Primary Schools competed in the 2011 annual Inter-School Swimming Sports.Silverstream was the overall winner Second was St Josephs with Totara Park taking third. All 13 of Upper Hutt’s primary schools (Pinehaven, Silverstream, St Brendan’s, Trentham, Fraser Crescent, Upper Hutt, St Josephs, Oxford Crescent, Totara park, Birchville, Maoribank, Plateau and Mangaroa) entered 20-30 students creating a tight squeeze at H2O but a great atmosphere of team spirit, support and pride for the schools.“It was fantastic to see all the schools in Upper Hutt together under their school banners, in their sports uniforms, along with teachers and parents, spurring each other on,” says Upper Hutt Swim Club’s Debbie Edwards.Heats and finals were held in year level with events for Year 4, 5 and 6. Each student was allowed to compete in a maximum of two races and a relay.Stand out performers who won both their allowed two solo events were:- Chelsey Edwards, St Josephs (Year 5 Girls 25m Freestyle and 25m Breastroke), Lochlainn Marryatt, Plateau

(Year 6 Boys 50m Freestyle and 25m Backstroke), Alyssa Mataiti, St Josephs (Year 5 Girls 50m freestyle and 25 m Backstroke), Connor Eales, Mangaroa School ( Year 5 Boys 50m Freestyle and 25m Backstroke), Rianna de Gieve, St Brendans (Year 6 Girls 50m Freestyle and Girls Open 25m Butterfly), Brianna Carson, St Josephs (Year 4 Girls 25m Freestyle and 25m Breaststroke) and Jonty Bamber, Silverstream (Year 4 Boys 25m Freestyle and 25m Breaststroke). Each year one school has the job of organizing this event, this year it was Silverstream School. The Upper Hutt Swim Club also helped out with starters and for the first time this year also provided time keeping for every lane.“Having time keepers ensured accuracy of results and worked really well,” Mrs Edwards says.

With customers generosity, staff giving away their tips, Esquires Upper Hutt onating takings and a dollar for dollar offer from Esquires NZ, Upper Hutt’s Esquires Coffee House has donated $749.70 to helping those suffering in Canterbury.“We are pleased that this great little Upper Hutt café has been able to do something to help the cause,” say owners Grant and Phillipa Edlin.

EASTER WEEKEND

ph 5274116

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONMangaroa Lifestylers Maureen and Wayne Patterssen are opening their property this weekend as part of the first ever National Dexter Cattle Day.Dexter Cattle Famers all round the country are doing the same in an aim to introduce others to their favourite breed. The couple have owned their block at 137 Colletts Road for nine years – it’s been their first experience of living on the land and their first of owning cattle. They are hooked – both on the lifestyle and Dexter cattle. They say Dexter’s are “quiet, easy to handle, good foragers and because of their size they don’t make a huge mess in the paddocks.”“The Dexter is a dual-purpose breed suited to both meat and milk production. This is a compact breed and very productive animal, with the meat being high quality, lean and tender. Dexter cows also have an excellent reputation when it comes to milk,” Maureen says.“We do hope people will come along and have a look at this breed

during the weekend (April 910 10).The Petterssen’s property will be open from 10am to 3pm both days and Maureen and Wayne will be on hand to discuss Dexters. There is no charge and the property will be open in any weather.Dexters are one of the most

interesting of New Zealand’s minority breeds of cattle. It’s the smallest and also one of the oldest breeds of British cattle. The Dexter evolved from the native Irish cattle and although the characteristics of the breed were  described from the 1700s, they were not recognised as

an  identifiable breed  until the 1870s.  The first Dexters were imported into New Zealand in 1904.They may be black, red or dun coloured (although black is the most common), and naturally horned although many are polled. “As a breed they have great advantages for the small farmer,” says Maureen. “As well as being quiet and easy to handle, they require less in the way of fencing and yards than larger animals. They are fine milkers and produce excellent beef providing smaller cuts. Dexters are easy to get in calf and calve easily; they can also be used for multiple suckling. And on top of all this, as lightweights they are better for the land, especially under wet conditions,” she says.“Although Dexters were  imported into New Zealand in 1904, the breed was maintained for only a few years. In 1979 Dexter semen was brought into the country, and a New Zealand Dexter Breeders’ Association formed in 1993.  By 2005 there were over 3,000 Dexters of various grades of purity  registered with what is now named the Dexter Cattle Society New Zealand Incorporated and by

2009 over 5,000 cattle had been registered in New Zealand.“The conservation of the Dexter is considered an important project both because of its ancient lineage and because it is a minority breed the world over besides possessing some highly desirable attributes,” she says.Maureen is the area representative for the Dexter Cattle Society in NZ. She runs workshops at her property three to four times a year for owners from all around the region. The next workshop is on May 28 and it will be not just for Dexter owners but any small block holders who run cattle of any type. There will be a speaker on the new ear tagging requirements from the Animal Health Board as well as one about changing requirements for DNA samples for parent verification.“This is being run for Dexter Society members, but it will be equally useful to any small block farmers who run cattle and we welcome them,” she says.Anyone wanting more information about this weekend’s open day or the May workshop can phone Maureen and Wayne on 5263785.

Mangaroa’s Wayne Petterssen with his favourite breed of cattle, the Dexter, is opening his property this weekend so others can get to know the breed.
