The Godolphin and Latymer SchoolInformation
The Godolphin and Latymer School. From 1906
onwards it received grants from the London
County Council and the Board of Education for
equipment, library books and buildings. In 1951
the school received Voluntary Aided status
under the 1944 Education Act, and in 1977,
rather than becoming a non-selective school
under the State system, it reverted to full
independent status.
At Godolphin and Latymer, our long history of
providing education for girls from a wide range
of backgrounds creates an enriching and
inclusive atmosphere. Within this principled,
caring and friendly community, girls learn to
lead, to work together for mutual benefit, to
communicate clearly and to forge firm
friendships.
At Godolphin and Latymer, we encourage girls
to learn about local, national and global issues
and in so doing we believe they become
considerate, compassionate and courageous
young women who fully expect to take active
responsibility for the community and the
environment in which they live, as well as for
themselves, both now and in the future.
History of the school
The Godolphin and Latymer School is a day
school for 750 girls aged between 11 and 18.
It was built in 1861 as the Godolphin School,
a boarding establishment for boys, set in fields
near the River Thames at Hammersmith in West
London. In 1905 it became an independent
day school for girls, associated with the
Latymer Foundation and taking the name of
Aims and Ethos
At Godolphin and Latymer, we aim to provide
our girls with an outstanding education.
Through the lessons and activities in which they
participate, girls learn for life. They develop
habits of mind that promote curiosity and
initiative, intellectual rigour and independence
of thought, reflective learning and flexible
thinking, the ability to maintain an open mind
and to reach a balanced judgement. They
achieve excellent examination results and follow
the higher education pathway of their choice at
leading institutions in the UK
and beyond.
At Godolphin and Latymer, we recognise that all
our girls are different and we aim to provide
each one with a stimulating and enjoyable
education. We offer an exciting range of
intellectual, creative and physical challenges and
opportunities, encouraging the development of
individual passions and particular skills alongside
the self esteem and confidence with which to
succeed in unfamiliar situations.

Throughout our admissions procedure we aim
to provide equality of opportunity for
applicants. Each candidate is selected on her
merits, and it is immaterial whether she is from
an independent or maintained school. For first
year entrance (Year 7), offers are made as a
result of the entrance tests in Mathematics and
English, the school reference, the interviews
and any additional information.
Registration and Application
Parents may register their daughters at any
time. They will then receive information about
Open Days and will be sent an application form
for their daughter to sit the entrance tests. The
application form must be returned no later than
30th November for First Year entrance (Year 7)
and 31st October for Sixth Form entrance
(Year 12).
Registration Fee £100.00
(The registration fee is non-refundable)
First Year entrance (Year 7)
Application forms must be returned to the
school by 30th November.
The school is a member of the North London
Independent Girls’ Schools’ Consortium and
all schools have an agreed code of practice
(see page 10).
Opportunities to visit the school
During the Summer term, parents who have
registered are invited to meet the Head
Mistress in small groups. At these meetings
the work and ethos of the school is outlined.
There is every opportunity to ask questions
and to have a tour of the school. Also, during
the Autumn Term there are three occasions
when the whole school is open and staff and
girls are available to answer questions. These
provide an opportunity for girls to come with
their parents to see round the school.
Candidates from overseas who are unable
to attend these events should contact
the Registrar.
The examinations
Candidates are asked to take papers in
English and Mathematics. There is an agreed
syllabus, approved by all schools in the
Consortium, and sample papers are available
on the website.
Guidance notes from the Consortium (full
information is available on the website).
Admissions Procedure
8
English
The English examination is one hour and
fifteen minutes long.
It is in two sections, Reading and Writing.
The two sections carry equal marks.
In the Reading section, girls are required to
read a short passage and answer questions.
In the Writing section, girls are set a writing
task which may be based in some way on the
passage in the Reading section.
Mathematics
The Mathematics examination is one hour and
fifteen minutes long.
The content of the papers in all areas will be
based on the assumption that candidates are
working towards Level 5 of the Mathematics
National Curriculum.
There will be a variety of questions testing
basic numerical skills, problem solving and
logical thinking.
Girls may also be required to demonstrate
more developed powers of reasoning and the
ability to solve simple problems with a newly
introduced concept.
The interviews
We interview all candidates. There will be two
general individual interviews which will be
kept as informal as possible.
Offers
Offers will be made in late February or early
March. Parents are asked to give a reply
within a week.
Occasional vacancies for other yearsin the school (Year 8 to Year 10)
We do not require a registration fee unless we
know that a place has become available. Girls
are tested in English, Mathematics , Science
and a modern language. Girls may then be
invited for interview. We regret that it is not
possible to test and interview all candidates. A
reference from the candidate’s current school
is always requested.
Sixth Form entrance (Year 12)
Parents may register their daughter at any
time for entry to the Sixth Form but
application forms must be returned to the
school by 31st October for a place the
following September. The Registrar writes to
the candidate’s Headteacher asking for a
reference on academic progress, expected
GCSE results and general contribution to the
life of the school. Candidates are interviewed
and tested in those subjects that they would
like to study at Advanced and AS level or for
the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
Girls will be required to attend on two days
in November. They should bring a portfolio, if
applying for Art.
Offers are usually made in December.

1 Applications Please contact each school for
which you wish your daughter to be
considered requesting an Application Form and
any other relevant information. N.B. You
must complete a separate application form
for all schools to which you apply whether
they are in the same group or not.
The individual schools to which you have
applied will then process your application and
send you any necessary information. You are
strongly advised to attend Open Days at all the
schools for which you have applied and you
should ring each school early in the Autumn
Term for the dates and times of
Open Days.
On your application form you will be asked to
state at which school you wish your daughter
to take the entrance tests. She will be given
equal consideration by the other schools in the

that she may only sit tests at ONE school in
each group.
2 School Reference A reference will be
requested from the Head of the candidate’s
school prior to the entrance test.

of each school.
5 Interviews The Consortium schools make
their own arrangements for interviews.
6 Results of Tests These will be made available
to all the other schools in the Consortium. The
other schools to which your daughter has
applied will then consider whether or not to offer
a place on the basis of the tests, interview and
school reference.
7 Offers Offers will be sent out to parents by all
schools in the Consortium on Tuesday 26th
February. Some of these may be for a place on a

waiting list is not given. All girls on the waiting
list are considered to have qualified for entry
