A heartbroken woman is concerned her cat was deliberately dunked in anti-freeze, as similar reports emerge. Sandra Cumming’s three year-old cat, Cosmo, returned home two weeks ago with a green liquid over its face, front legs and down his throat. Despite attempts to clean it off the cat was found to have cre- atinine levels in its blood 180 times more than it should. It was the second time the cat had come home with the liquid on it, however the sec- ond time was much more severe and it looked as if it had its head in it for some time. Sandra’s vet recommended Cos- mo be put down. Aſter calling the police and SPCA Sandra says she was told of three other recent incidents, all similar to hers. “Cats like anti-freeze apparently, so we are still not sure if it was ac- cidental poisoning or a deliberate attack. But four cats suffering the same fate seem a bit too coinci- dental,” she says. SPCA inspector Craig Crowley says anti-freeze poisoning does happen from time to time. “Un- fortunately cats do love anti-freeze so it’s difficult to know if it’s a deliberate at- tack or not, but I’m sure it happens.” What makes Cosmo’s case a little different is the quantity he was covered in, which is what raised Sandra’s suspicions about it be- ing a deliberate attack. However, her main concern now is to warn people to dispose of or store any anti freeze they have care- fully, so no animal can get into it. And if anyone has a cat that comes home covered in green liquid don’t waste any time, get it to the vet. TUESDAY 9 August 2011

Four new bus shelters have just been constructed as the council continues to increase the infra-structure of the city’s bus service. Two brand new shelters have been erected on Annesbrook Dr, one on the “outward journey of Main Rd Stoke” and one outside Trafalgar Park, although the latter is not on an official hourly SBL Group Nelson route. The bus shelter outside Trafalgar Park was part of the stadium’s upgrade and the school travel plan, as requested by students of Clifton Terrace School. Nelson City Council transport and road safety advisor Margaret Parfitt says the shelters, which are constructed each year in high demand areas pointed out by SBL, are another “baby step” towards improving the city’s bus service. Margaret says people are reluctant to catch the bus if they have to spend ten minutes waiting in the rain, so the shelters will overcome that barrier.Under the passenger transport plan, out for consultation, the council is hoping to integrate The Bus and a Nelson to Richmond service and increase the frequency of trips to every 20 minutes at peak times. Margaret says improving the infrastructure goes along way to achieving this and the feedback has already been hugely positive, with council speaking with adjacent residents before going ahead with the construction. “On both those occasions the residents said ‘fantastic, great, ‘cos I catch the bus all the time I now

have somewhere to sit out of the weather’,” says Margaret.Specific bus stops were chosen by SBL bus drivers and customer feedback. “Their drivers are at the coalface, they know where the high demand areas are. It makes sense to provide for more popular bus shelters. We base where we build these shelters from customer feedback and service providers.”Next year the council will focus on the service rather than the shelters, which have increased by close to 20 in the past ten years.

Frustration in droves in TahunaFrustrated Tahunanui residents demanded lead-ership from councillors last week, saying heavy trucks need to be moved from their suburb be-fore someone is seriously hurt. About 70 residents and business owners attended a meeting called by the Tahunanui Community Centre last Thursday night to address concerns raised in a survey it did last year. Among the top-ics were traffic volume and heavy vehicles trav-elling through the suburb, safe crossing along Tahunanui Dr, future development, access and parking around the shopping area and infilling on sections.Nelson City councillors Gail Colling-wood, Rachel Reese and Paul Mathe-son were joined by NCC engineer Mike Schruer. The quartet were asked repeat-ed questions about the safety of heavy traffic roaring through their commu-nity, most of which were unanswered, leaving most, including the councillors, frustrated. “What can I say, other than it’s a State Highway and NZTA make decisions about it,” said councilor, for-mer mayor and long time Tahunanui resident Paul Matheson. The crux of the resident’s anger was around the “spineless” report into the traffic options for Nel-son. Two weeks ago council released a report 18 months in the making, which said Nelson did not have a traffic congestion problem and recom-mended no new roads should be built.Councillors are set to consider the report at its policy and planning meeting this Thursday.Tahunanui Business Association member John Gilbertson said the report should not be paid for by ratepayers because it failed to deliver on its brief. “We believe the report hasn’t given us a clear indication of what the best route is. What was asked for was the best solution and the best route. This report has failed in that.”

Councillor Rachel Reese said it was obvious Ta-hunanui has a “pretty major severance problem”. “Does the neighbourhood have an appropriate level of traffic? No. What do I think about it? Not a neighbourhood in the city would welcome it.”She urged concerned residents to think about influencing the decision and said it is highly un-likely that the number of trucks and other heavy vehicles heading to Port Nelson will decrease.“We need communities to come forward and re-quire you people to be very vocal,” she said.Paul said “for a thousand reasons” he would like to see the State Highway moved but the options were rather poor. “We have a pond of money sit-ting there that we are told we can’t use, that is

what chokes you,” he said referring to the “R funding” that central govern-ment has allocated council, but the Southern Arterial Route does not quali-fy for, because it is not seen as beneficial enough. He said the heavy traffic would need to find another route if the concept of a village “we all dream for” will ever hap-pen in Tahunanui.Gail Collingwood sympathised with those at the meeting but was at a loss for

answers. “This is a safety issue. This road is a state highway and Tahuna is very unfortunate, I’m not sure where we could move the state highway to.”Which prompted angry responses from people asking why council leadership has gone miss-ing on the issue and the Southern Link not been built. “Why are we failing to make the decision to move the road?” cried one local man.Residents also questioned what can be done about the safety of Tahunanui Dr for primary school students, many of which have to cross the road daily. It was asked why that crossing does not have flashing lights like other schools; again the answer was it was out of council’s hands, the road belongs to NZTA. “Because it’s a state high-way, it’s made for cars, not people,” said Paul.

Facebook feel goods

The anonymous Nelson Compliments Face-book page has been spreading cheer to locals by posting nice comments they receive about people. Photo: Andrew Board.

Three mysterious Nelson teenagers are doing their best to spread some happiness via a Face-book page titled Nelson Compliments. With already more than 2100 friends on the social networking website, the Nelson Compli-ments page is reaching out to all the corners of the region.Nelson Compliments works by private messag-ing the admin a compliment about someone you know who someone deserves a special mention or congratulations and the trio make it their sta-tus.The group’s founders, who have remained anoy-mous since the page’s inception in 2009, were in-spired by the gossip and negativity that is often

seen between teenagers. “We wanted people to have an anonymous way to make someone’s day,” says one of administrators of the page. “Everyone deserves a compliment!”The three creators, two girls and one boy, are all former Nayland College students who finished in 2009.The page has also sparked similar concepts around New Zealand including a popular post-quake Christchurch Compliments page. The compliments include anything from some-one helping out a friend to just thanking their partner. “If we can brighten the lives of one per-son each day, we are happy. We want to remind people of the happiness that kindness can bring.”To find the group search Nelson Compliments on www.facebook.com.

Here’s the all-new compact car from Hyundai, the Elantra. The latest edition of Hyundai’s most popular model worldwide, it reflects the powerful brand’s latest Fluidic Sculpture philosophy and the newly evolved Wind Craft design.Featuring the Gamma 1.6-litre GDI engine and 6-speed automatic transmission developed en-tirely in-house. “This new replacement for the Elantra will most likely pro-vide the best styling and performance in its class,” ex-plained the Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai New Zea-land, Tom Ruddenklau.“It has a sportier and even more progressive image than its predecessor, and it will continue the successful Hyun-dai formula of optimum technology and power-train to deliver class-leading performance and fuel efficiency.” The i35 will sip just 6.0l/100km*.Although the new Elantra is a completely new vehicle, it’s the fifth generation of the model’s lineage which has racked up cumulative sales of 6 million units worldwide and high recognition from a number of world renowned car-rating agencies. The all-new, powerful and fuel efficient 4-cylinder Gamma 1.6 Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine delivers a peak output of 140ps at 6,300 RPM and maximum torque of 17.0kg•m. GDI technology doesn’t only boost power output:

it also improves fuel economy. The new Elantra’s commitment to extreme fuel efficiency continues with a six-speed automatic transmission. Hyun-dai’s Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy reflects sophistication and dynamic lines into the shape of vehicles, while Wind Craft has its design mo-tives in the flowing movement of air and the i35 artistic sculpture. Like Hyundai’s latest models ix35 the compact SUV and i45 sedan, the i35’s

outer design is highlighted by bold, dynamic graphic ele-ments such as hexagonal front grille and dramatically swept back headlamps. Alloy wheels (15-, 16- or 17-inch) complete its assertive stance. The new Elantra will delight and sur-prise with a raft of other ad-vanced features not found on

other compacts, HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps, LED combination lamps in the rear, heated rear seats, puddle lamps and a color TFT LCD information display nestled in the gauge cluster. Typically Hyundai, the Elantra is strong on safety features. VSM (Vehicle Stability Man-agement), which helps vehicles stay in a stable position, is applied for the first time in its class. Side & curtain airbags as well as active headrest are provided as basic features. High-tech safety features such as TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), ESS (Emergency Stop Signal) are also available.

Design, power and safety are packed into Hyundai’s latest com-pact sedan the i35.

Waterfront makeover nearing completionNelson’s waterfront continues to transform, giving locals and tourists the best possible viewing of Nelson Haven.Work on the latest stage of the devel-opment, which has been more than ten years in the making, is due for completion at the end of the month.Andrew Petheram, of Nelson City Council, says the latest platform was designed in conjunction with the Nelson Yacht Club and will provide fantastic viewing as boats come in and out of Haven. The project is the third stage of four and has cost rate-payers $750,000.The design includes plenty of places for people to sit, stairs to the rocky beach below and penguin hatches under the deck to help stop them walking across Rocks Rd.

NEWS IN BRIEF• Nelson Provincial Museum is encour-aging local residents to enjoy their re-gional history by reducing barriers to attendance and making its permanent exhibition free. The museum announced the decision last week and it will mean Nelson and Tasman ratepayers will have free access to the natural and social his-tory of Te Tau Ihu. Locals will be asked to show some evidence they live here, such as a library card.

• Drivers under 20 are now not able to consume any alcohol before driving. The new law came into effect on Sunday and the penalty will be a fine of $200 and 50 demerit points. Youth drivers with a blood/breath alco-hol concentration over 0.03 or 150 will be subject to the same drink drive penalties as they are now. This year alone, 84 driv-ers in Nelson Bays aged between 15-19 years have been charged with drink driv-ing offences.

• The Oi You Urban Art Exhibition which runs from 23 Sept – 24 Oct at Founders Heritage Park has received sponsorship funding from Nelson City Council’s Nel-son Events Marketing and Development Programme (NEMDP). Oi You! is New Zealand’s largest Urban Art Show and will feature artwork by world famous ur-ban art protagonists such as Banksy and Faile, The Cut Collective from Auckland and finalists of the Oi You! Competition from around NZ.

Local beers win big at awards

While Nelson transforms itself to Little Italy for the Rugby World Cup, Richmond is turning its Queen St into Main Street, USA.Richmond has a number of strong links with the United States, includ-ing having one of its home town he-roes amongst the US rugby team. Junior Sifa played several seasons for Waimea Old Boys, Nelson Bays and the Tasman Makos before ply-ing his trade in Europe. It was over there that US, and former Ireland, coach Eddie O’Sullivan found out that Junior was born in American Samoa and eligible for the Eagles.

Richmond also has a number of ex-pats living in the town and some business links. So, to celebrate those ties, Rich-mond is climbing into the world cup fun, hosting the Richmond Festival ahead of the USA v Italy game on September 27. The festival will include the Tasman Invitational Seven’s on Sunday, Sep-tember 25; a Stars ‘n’ Stripes Block Party which starts with a parade down Queen St and then a party at Sundial Square on Monday, Sep-tember 26 and an All Star Tailgate Party at the A & P Showgrounds

before the big game on Tuesday, September 27. Buses from the tailgate party will be running to the USA v Italy game at Trafalgar Park.Organiser Paul McConnachie says the three days of action will be huge for Richmond and will have a real community and festival feel. “It will be an awesome party and we urge all our American friends and people wanting to have a good time to put the dates in their diary and come join us.”For more information visit www.tasman.govt.nz.

Nelson breweries have cleaned up at the coun-try’s top beer awards, with one brewery bringing home ten medals alone.Sprig & Fern Brewery earned a gold, six silvers and three bronze medals at the BrewNZ Inter-national Beer Awards 2011, with McCashin’s Brewery, Townsend Brewery and Redwood Cel-lar also amongst the winners.Overall, Nelson brought home 16 awards out of 130 total medals from the 465 beers entered by New Zealand and international breweries. The Sprig & Fern won more than any other New Zealand brewery. One of its owners, Dave Barrett, says it was a “pretty bloody amazing” effort. “To win ten is a pretty big deal, I’m absolutely rapt.”The annual awards were held in Wellington.McCashin’s Brewery won a major prize at the awards, picking up International Lager Styles with its Stoke Amber beer.Dave says the haul by Nelson brewers confirms the region is a force in the national brewing scene. “When you look at the fact there were only 130 awards handed out and more than ten per cent came here, that is a big achievement.”

A slice of Nelson history at Melrose House

FHey, thanks for reading our paper. Have you got a story? Give us a call on 548 4949

A few years ago Melrose House was waiting for its demolition orders. Its furniture had been stripped and sold, even its door knobs removed. But a fight for history prevailed and one of Nel-son’s grand old homes survives for all Nelsonians to enjoy. Now the society that runs the house is launch-ing a book of its history, thanks to local historian Ruth Bayley.Manager of Melrose House, Simone Henbrey, says the book will be launched this Saturday and people will have the opportunity to find out more about the 140 year-old house.“A few years ago the house was really run down, it was really sad but there is so much happening here now, a cafe, venue hire. It is in a much better shape.”The house was commissioned for Charles Wil-lett but upon his death1881 his son-in-law Percy Adams, a local lawyer, took ownership.Percy was known as a keen hunter and early photos of the houses interior shows plenty of

evidence of his success with a gun.Percy’s son Noel was handed the house in 1932 after his father died. It was Noel who then gifted the house to the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers in 1945.It was then used as a rest home for women, with a rule that residents were not allowed up until they had been served breakfast in bed.In the early 1970’s the house had become too much for the WDFF and ownership was passed to Nelson City Council, which was reluctant to take it on, saying the financial burden should not be passed to the ratepayer. The Colonel Noel Percy Trust took over the run-ning of the house and fought to keep it when the council decided it should be demolished. Simone says it’s great to see Nelson take pride in the house again. “The Adams family were so gen-erous, so it’s nice that the house they donated is still here and available for all Nelsonains.”The book launch is 2pm this Saturday at Melrose Historic House.

GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS: Nelson College for Girls’ business study students Josie Krishnasamy, Renee Hutchinson, both 17, Mikayla Yee, 16, Seema Coote, 17, and Losaline Ma-fileo, 16, prepare for the Young Enterprise Trade Fair. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

It’s business time as the race to be crowned Nel-son’s top young enterprise students heats up.In less than two week’s time, students participat-ing in The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme will be taking their product to the Sat-urday market for the YES Trade Fair.YES is an experiential business programme where secondary students set up a company, create real products or services, and make a real profit or loss. This is part of the company’s chance to continue promotions, product development and most im-portantly, making sales, since starting it in term one.One of the groups featuring in the trade fair will be Nelson College for Girls’ Kiwi Bottles. Kiwi Bottles are stainless steel water bottles.“We wanted something that helped stopped us-

ing plastic bottles. Our friends are always buying them and just throwing them out after. It’s bad for the environment,” says Seema Coote, 16. “We just wanted a product that you could continue to use for ages.” The bottles will be sold for $15.Josie Krischnasamy, 17, says the six months have been hard. “There’s so much paper work.”But she’s hoping the eco-friendy nature of the product will hopefully attract customers. “They’re durable and designed to last.”Other designs include Knock Out sportswear from Nelson College, body mist from Nelson College for Girls, pineapple icecream also from Nelson College for Girls and many others. The YES Trade Fair will be held at the Nelson Market in Montgomery Square on Saturday Au-gust 20 from 8am to 1pm.

Students get taste of the business world The world’s tallest 21stThere’s no bigger way to spend your 21st birthday than on the tallest moun-tain on the planet. So when Nelson man Nick Calder-Scholes weighed up the options to surpass his 20th birthday skydive, there was really only one solution - have a party on Mt Everest. “I decided that being a 21st it had to not only out-do skydiving but blow any other birthday I’m going to have out of the water. I mean it’s your 21st, it’s meant to be a big one,” says Nick.Titled on a Facebook event as Nick’s Casual As 21st, his coming of age will be anything but, as he spends a 13 day jour-ney amongst the Nepalese mammoth highlighted by climbing to the Everest Base Camp, 5300m above sea level.Nick, a former Nayland College student currently living in Western Australia, is hoping to be joined by friends from Nelson and trekkers he met in India. But he says no-one really believes it’s true. “I never really thought of it as a ‘far out’ there thing to do. But every

time I mention it, it starts off with disbelief followed by pure amaze-ment. I find it quite funny.”His journey begins on October 10 and will cost around $4000 includ-ing two weeks in Thailand to recov-er. “For a 35 day trip to the most bad-ass mountain in the world, it’s not too bad,” he says.

TUESDAY 9 August 2011

It may have been set up, but the value of the friendship cannot be underestimated.Raphaella Carver and Pam Balm met at a difficult time in both their lives, but four months into the friendship and they both say they would not be without it.Pam, of Bishopdale, is unable to drive af-ter a health relapse gives her dizzy spells which makes it too dangerous. Her taxi driver told her to get in touch with Age Concern and get some discount vouchers, which she did. But she got far more than taxi vouchers out of the visit.Age Concern assessed Pam and asked if she would like someone to pop in and spend a few hours a week with her. She says she didn’t want to be a burden, but agreed.Raphaella, of Monaco, went through her own health problems just after starting the process to be a volunteer in the Age Con-cern programme. Once she recovered, she went to finish what she started and Age Concern matched the two women.“I decided to do it mainly because my mum went into a home and my dad was in a rest home and people were support-ing him, but they were in Christchurch,” says Raphaella. “So I thought if people are supporting him down there, maybe I could support people in my community. I’ve found it really valuable, it makes you part of the community and it’s been really rewarding.”She says they clicked instantly. “We just got

on, it was easy to talk to each other and we do go out and do lots of things.”Pam is determined to get her fitness back after her most recent health scare and the pair often walk together. “I used to go to Saxton Field and do the walking track out there so going walking with Raphaella is good because it is building me back up again,” she says.“I found that before Raph-aella came along I didn’t get out all that often, so it’s been lovely meeting Raphaella, we get on so well and have little chuckles.”Raphaella says Pam’s posi-tivity and having some-thing else to think about has helped her with her own health problems.“It’s something we forget when we are together, we don’t talk about it, we stay positive, it’s the only way to be. I really enjoy Pam and the relationship and it’s re-ally nice to have the relation-ship with older people, not in your usual circle of friends. Most families have that with parents but with ours away we don’t see them that often so it provides a really nice balance for our family.”Raphaella’s son and Pam’s grandson are even the same

age and play sport against each other.Pam says the past few months have been wonderful. “I wasn’t expecting it but we just clicked straight away.”

• A quiet week with two container ves-sels, a big car carrier, a fertiliser ship, a log ship, a cement ship and over 20 large fishing vessel movements.• There was a brief outage of the outer sector lead light however the port staff promptly repaired at the next low tide ensuring that no shipping was affected.• It was good to see the paddle-boarders taking advantage of the calm weather and wearing wetsuits or personal floata-tion devices. Many kayakers and waka were seen about. A reminder that the hours of darkness are officially one half hour before sunset. Lights must be car-ried and illuminated if you are going to be out after this time.• The Coastguard boat was out last weekend as it is almost every weekend now, training and completing some diffi-cult exercises. Well done guys. If you are interested in being part of this great com-munity service call me during the week and I will arrange an introduction.• A yacht owner had a lucky escape this week when a passer-by noticed a whisp of smoke coming from the yacht. Quick ac-tion from the fire brigade then averted a possible disaster. Thanks to all involved. I believe a rag, left close to wires that short circuited was close to igniting.

If in doubt- don’t go out.

From start to finish, behind the scenes and in front of the large, appreciative audienc-es, the National Final of the New Zealand Theatre Federation’s Festival of Commu-nity Theatre held in Nelson over the week-end, was a huge success.Nelson’s Dramatix Theatre Development Trust, who hosted and organised the event, received special acknowledgment from the members of the New Zealand Theatre Fed-eration Executive and members of visiting teams for ‘a faultlessly organised Festival’ and warm Nelson welcome. No strangers to organisation, the ‘Trust’ who bring us the annual two day, Lest We Forget ANZAC event, assisted by volun-teers from Nelson Repertory, pulled out all the stops to put Nelson in the spotlight for the visiting teams, summed up in the words of one of the Napier Repertory members who said: “after all that travel it was so nice to have such an organised and warm welcome, our own team host to guide us and - look - this absolutely beau-tiful Theatre to perform in – we’re green with envy!”After weeks of planning and organisa-tion the Dramatix Trust team, led by Scott Frater, spent a manic weekend setting up for the two nights of competition, looking after the visiting teams and assisting with

the theatre related workshops – as well as finding time to rehearse their own two qualifying plays; ‘Cod of War’ written and Directed by Scott Frater, and ‘A Resident Evil’, written and Directed by TJ Ramsay, both coming away with awards.‘Cod of War’ received the Friday nights ‘People’s Choice Award’, and the Selecon Design/Technical Award while A Resi-dent Evil won ‘Best Production of a New Zealand Play’ and George Hollinsworth received A ‘Best Male Actor’ Award for his role as the Marquis de Sade. Overall honours went to the comedy ‘A talk in the Park’ by Invercargill Repertory Society. A surprising highlight on the last night of the competition was when Dunedin Ad-judicator Natalie Ellis-Wilson left the au-ditorium to make her final decisions and Dan Allen from Body in Space led Theatre Sports utilising several of the youth per-formers in a series of hilarious impromptu skits. The audience was soon hooting with laughter at the swift-thinking young ac-tors inspired responses to the crowd’s zany story suggestions.“This is by far one the best Festivals I have been to in years,” says former NZTF presi-dent and current president of the NZ Dra-ma Development Trust Jim Barr.

Using refilled cartridges voids my warranty.Wrong! The NZ Commerce Act and the Fair Trading Act states that it is illegal for a manufacturer to require the consumer to use a particular brand of supply. The warranty can only be voided if the cartridge is the primary cause of the fault. In the unlikely event that this should hap-pen our own guarantee covers the customer.

Using refills can harm my printer. Wrong! Refilling is simple refilling an empty ink cavity. We do not alter any of the casing or parts of the cartridge that your printer requires to op-erate. We are so confident that there is no risk to your printer from using re-filled cartridges that we offer a 100% guarantee.

Refills do not last as long as new car-tridge. Wrong! Our remanufactured car-tridges are refilled with the equiva-lent amount of ink to that of the original new cartridges.

Refillers use poor quality inks.Wrong! At Cartridge World we use quality German Inks that are spe-cifically formulated to mimic the original inks. We do not use one ink to fill all car-tridges. All cartridges have their own specific ink.

2011 is the sixth year that St Barnabas has run The Marriage Course. Over 100 couples have attended. Here is David and Helen’s story.

The Marriage CourseThe Marriage CourseThe Marriage Course --- A couple’s storyA couple’s storyA couple’s story

The next Marriage Course commences Wednesday 17 August 2011

Phone 547 5631 or email [email protected] for more information or to reserve your place

If we were asked to name one single event this year that enhanced, enriched and helped our relationship as husband and wife of 25 years, we would have to say that attending The Marriage Course run by St Barnabas Stoke and working through the homework together, was it.

It worked for us in many ways as we planned on a holiday to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Having 6 children we had been unable to get away for an extended period of time since our honeymoon. We missed the last night of the eight session evening programme because of our second honeymoon, but we were able to cover the last topic on our return. To my delight, I discovered that I had been speaking my wife’s love language the entire time we were away on the tropical South Pacific island of Niue. She had 100% of my time.

The benefits of attending such a course are huge, especially for people like us who are not into the group therapy type situation, where you sit around in a circle and discuss private issues, touchy, feely stuff. Attending is like going out on a date, having dessert, watching a DVD presentation, talking with your partner in a relaxed and non-threatening environment, discussing topics which may not normally be approached, dealing with issues and sorting out stuff. It not only benefits you as a couple, but also anyone else who has anything to do with you, because you have grown as a couple through your honesty with each other and become more secure and loving. This fact doesn’t escape the attention of all those around you.

At $90 per couple, the course delivers value for money. We would recommend the course to any couple, married or unmarried, at any stage of their relationship.

Nelson press through to Press Cup finalNelson College first XV have set a grand fi-nal date with rivals St Bede’s College after seeing off Christchurch Boys’ High School twice in consecutive matches. As skipper Mitchell Drummond booted the home side to a 20-18 triumph with only one minute remaining on Saturday. “I was always going to take the kick because of the position we were in but it was do-or-die for our whole season,” says Mitchell. “It was pretty special. When it went over everyone got up.”But the side’s delight was short lived know-ing what awaits them this weekend in the form of the two-time defending champions. St Bede’s have won every game this year in-cluding a 34-20 Northern Conference win over Nelson earlier in the season. Nelson previously won the Press Cup in 2007 when they finished the season undefeated.Kerehama Barrett scored the opening try and Tyler Morgan-Kearns dotted down later in the game. “At the start of the year we had a lot of doubters who didn’t think we’d get this far, so to finish the season off with a Press Cup final is pretty awesome.”

It was all smooth sailing as Robert Green-wood’s Wild Oats did the job to be crowned overall Winter Series winner on Sunday.Race six, the final race in the Winter series, was held in a fresh southwest breeze that gusted up to 26 knots when a cold wet front moved through the bay, reminding the ten boats com-peting they were sailing in the start of August.Ralph Urwin’s Counterpoint, starting at the Port end of the line, crossed the rest of the fleet coming out on starboard to lead the way up the first beat to the top mark. The bigger Mrs Jones, sailed by Charlie Gal-lagher, pulled into the lead half way up the 1.6 mile beat, enjoying the stronger breeze round-ing the top mark first followed by Wild Oats

and Noel Eichbaum’s Blackout. The spinnaker run back down to the bottom mark had the boats reaching speeds of 10–12 knots. Spinnakers down, it was back into the chilly wind for the second lap, with the Mrs Jones crew extending their lead over Wild Oats, to cross the finish over minute ahead of the overall winner.Handicap results saw the larger heavier boats take out the top placings in the stronger breeze. Lindsay Duff ’s Wind Dancer taking out the win, from Mrs Jones and Wild Oats.Overall points were added with Wild Oats tak-ing out the Series win from runner up Mike Rose’s Farr A Way Stuart Morgan’s Redline in third.

Anna Robinson put in some nice feeds while Ruth Swaney was a valuable link through court, while pulling in a number of well timed intercepts.Caroline Fergusson made an impact off the bench

they had learnt from the recent South Island Junior Tournament.Nelson played a great team game with every-one contributing well to the convincing 33-15 win. Centre, Merekara McGuinetty balanced the court well, proving to be a great link while

ensuring good flow through court. Abbey Franklin displayed experience and maturity at goal attack, using her height well she shot accu-rately.Mikaela Collier was the dominate force in the defen-sive circle, where she picked up some valuable ball and rebounded strongly.

Cobras hiss past Tigers, book place in grand finalThe Stoke Cobras have shown their champion-ship creditials with a commanding 32-18 win over the Tahunanui Tigers at the ‘Snake Pit’ on Saturday.Currently unbeaten, only a previous 22-22 draw against the Tigers ruining any chance of a perfect season, the Cobras were clear favourites to book the first spot in the grand final after Saturday’s Tasman Rugby League major semi-final, and they did it with authority. But captain Troy Wilson says the side will need to be ready for a potential round two on August 20 with the Tigers likely to face them again, up against namesakes Motueka Tigers this week-end at the Tahunanui Playing Fields. The winner gaining the second and final spot to challenge for TRL’s top prize. “I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing them again in the final,” says Troy. “But I’m very confident we can win. Everyone is looking for the same goal and that’s what our plan was at the start of the season, that we’re all on the same page come finals day. We always talk about getting to the final because that’s the only game you want to play. All these other games are all forgotten now.”The Cobras have a representation of eight play-

ers in the Tasman Titans squad - the most from the five teams - but it was the entire 17 man line up that did the job on Saturday in a commanding second half performance.Second rower Leialoha Musika was a juggernaut on attack, and despite some early mistakes the defensive line held strong to deny Tahunanui’s impressive halfback Eliot Smith from sparking a late comeback.“Pressure, pressure” were the only words spoken at half time, with the score sitting at 22-12 in Stoke’s favour, as they looked to force errors upon the Tigers’ attack in the second spell. And it worked perfectly with the away side un-able to complete sets depsite their best efforts.Troy, the talismatic half, says qualifying for the final is “another dream come true” for the sea-son in which rugby league is starting to stamp it’s mark in the Nelson region. After the Canterbury earthquake a handful of rugby league players had relocated to the region and teamed up with the Cobras. “They’ve just fit straight in to the mould. It’s a lot easier bringing in guys who have that experience too.”Tahunanui Tigers play Motueka Tigers at the Ta-hunanui Playing Fields this Saturday at 2:30pm with the winner qualifying for the final.

TUESDAY 9 August 2011

The Stoke Reds certainly know how to en-tertain.With a slendour lead within their mits the hard hitting side held strong to deny Ta-pawera of the spoils as the Super Liquor Tahunanui Stoke Reds raised their arms in cheer on 80 minutes with the scoreline ending at 8-3 at Greenmeadows on Sat-urday, knowing that a semi final spot was sealed.A changed draw saw the boys from Ta-pawera arrive at the meadow determined to grasp a semi final spot when they came up against a Reds side equally determined to retain third spot in what is becoming a very closely contested race to the semis. But the win all but confirms the Reds of the third placing with just one week to go in the round robin.

In a game that went from one end of the park to the other, neither side was able to score. But when Stoke was gifted a penalty out in front, captain Wayde Sinclair gave the ball to goal kicker and first five Paddy Wakati-hi, knowing points could be precious. Not long after, Tapawera’s captain an-swered with a penalty of his own, drawing this tense battle  to leave the score locked three-all at the break. In a game that could have gone either way at any time, a fine forward effort off a Stoke lineout right on the Tapawera line saw lock  Nathan Gibson drive over for a well earned try.  With the conversion missed, the score sat at what was to be the final score of 8-3, as Tapawera were denied time and time again by a ressilient Stoke de-

fensive effort. Captain Wayde paid credit to his team’s courage and strength to hold strong in trying circumstances. “We didn’t care about the score we just wanted a gutsy effort,” says Wayde. “We definitely put in an 80 minute performance and I’m pretty

chuffed about that.” When Tapawera spent the major-ity of territory camped on the Stoke try line, the side played like their season de-pended on it. “We just had to guts it out. We were 8-3 up so all we had to do was to hold them out and we knew we’d win. It’s fantastic to qualify for the playoffs be-cause it was one of our aims at the start of the season. So it’s first goal achieved and I definitely think we have the squad to go all the way. Play-er’s attitudes just need to get in the right frame of mind. Ability wise we’ve got it no problem.”Waimea Old Boys and Marist are currently sitting on the table in first and sec-

ond place, but with one game to go, the top three spots aren’t going to change, meaning Stoke will play a semi final dress rehersal against Marist this week in the fi-nal round robin game. “Nothing is going to change now. We’re just going to work on combinations this week, we’ll go out to win of course, as you do with every game, but we just need to get our moves down packed for the next game.”Players of the day were Luke Epapara for a fine job at fullback and easily his best display and Nathan Gibson for his effort at lock and the day’s only try.Paddy, who is only 16 years-old, will re-main at first five. “He’s definitely got a bright future. He’s done the job.”Wayde says the mental attitude is what will be needed to overcome Marist in two week’s time. “Physically we can match any team. When we are down and out, just like on the weekend, we just have to guts it out. We’ve had other games like that this year where we’ve been camped on our goal line for 20 minutes and then we’ve let them in and that’s changed the game. And that could have happened on Saturday.”Stoke play Marist at Greenmeadows at 2pm this Saturday.

NEW WORLDSTOKE

Heartbreak for Stoke women as last second try rips title from graspA try in the final minutes looked to have sealed the championship for Stoke Women, until it was cancelled out by a lasp gasp effort from Waimea Old Boys’ fullback Aleisha Hart just moments later. It was a match truly worthy of finals status - the reigning champions against the minor pre-miers. Stoke and Waimea have had some epic battles over past seasons and this was no exception with momentum swinging both ways through-out. Waimea started strongly and seemed to have the measure of Stoke in the first half, denying them possession and territory which paid divi-dends in the form of a 13-0 lead at the break.Whatever coaches Willie Fletcher and Jason Hulena said to their charges in the halftime huddle seemed to have the desired effect, and Stoke swung into action immediately. The forwards started to work consistently at the breakdown and provide their backs with some much needed go-forward ball. The ben-efactor on this occasion was surprise package Stephy Omundsen who hit the ball at pace out wide after some quick handling through the backline to dot down in the corner. This was just the pick-me-up Stoke needed, and they didn’t relent, with halfback and cap-tain Angela Cotton running 30 metres to score

again after a cheeky dart from the base of a ruck. The conversion was duly slotted to close the gap to a single point, which sent the Stoke supporters into a frenzy. The Stoke onslaught seemed to frustrate Waimea who started to offend at the break-down, subsequently losing three players to the sin bin. Stoke continued to fight hard, hoping to capi-talize on their opponents indiscretions, and it was none other than an inspirational Angela who again sniped around the base of her for-wards to scurry away for Stoke’s third try.On occasions like this, time seems to stand still for Stoke, although it probably had the oppo-site affect for Waimea, and with the Stoke girls clinging to a slender 17-13 lead, the home sup-porters were literally counting down the final nerve-racking seconds. But Waimea weren’t giving up and were now back to a full 15 and hot on attack inside the Stoke 22. Stoke worked hard to organise their goal line defence but were eventually caught short down the blind side when Waimea’s full-back Aleisha Hart crossed right on fulltime to deny Stoke the victory. The team wishes to thank everyone for their support this year, particularly their coaches and sponsors, and also those familiar faces on the sideline every week. Bring on next season!

Co-coach Tony Smith says, “improvements are imperative” if the side wants to en-tertain playoff thoughts.
