9 tips to help you become a great writer

Nowadays every man and his dog has a blog, you can search online for a matter of minutes and find someone ranting about just about any topic anywhere. The reason they have become so popular, is because they are a great way to spread your news, ideas and because they drive traffic directly to your site and can often increase sales.

The great thing about blogging is that you can write about what you want, without restrictions no matter how niche your audience is. Not everyone has the literary excellence of JK Rowling or the command of language like Jane Austin, so to make things a little easier, these are Xposure’s top tips for becoming an amazing writer.

1. Be concise and clear

Have short sentences and paragraphs that are direct and straight to the point. This will keep your audience’s attention for longer, without the intimidating masses of black text on a white background.

DON’T WAFFLE!

2. Stay on topic

As easy as it is to let your mind wander, and your pen digress, stick to your initial points and only add information that is relevant and interesting. Readers aren’t always that interested in your favourite soap, or what you’ve eaten that day…

3. Use interesting sub-headings to break up large quantities of text. Strong headlines will grab a readers attention and keep them hooked!

People like to read

information in numbered, or

bullet pointed lists, or text

that is clearly separated into

different relevant headings!

4. Use simple words.

Where ever you can, use the simplest way you can to describe what it is you are talking about. Although it can make you feel intelligent to use the longer words, if audiences don’t understand it, they won’t read it!

5. Use active sentences to keep your work immediate, relevant and up to the minute. Passive sentences are often longer than active ones, meaning you waste your valuable word count, on unnecessary phrases.

“HE KICKED THE

BALL” IS BETTER

THAN “THE BALL

WAS KICKED”

6. Take all the words that aren’t necessary out! Get rid of ‘really’ make ‘very’ vanish. You don’t need them, and just make your writing fluffy and unnecessarily long!

7. Spell check your work.

No one likes coming across errors in writing, it makes it look lazy or rushed or uncared for, so make sure you check thoroughly to avoid any mistakes slipping through the net, and making your efforts go to waste.

8. Write a lot.

Whenever you can, get writing! The more you write, the better your writing will become, and like any muscle, you need to keep it exercised to keep it strong.
