Jubilee Year of Mercy March 27, 2016

Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of the Lord

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. Alleluia! Easter is always, but especially in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the victory of God’s gentle but invincible mercy raising up Jesus, “faithful witness, the first-born of the dead” (Revelation 1:5), “first-born among many brothers [and sisters]” (Romans 8:29), conquering death in all its forms, in all of us in the human family. In Luke’s Vigil Gospel, heavenly messengers send the women forth: “Remember what [Jesus] said to you” (Luke 24:6). In John’s Gospel, the empty tomb likewise “sends forth” Mary Magdalene, Peter, and the Beloved Disciple, who believe though they do not fully understand. Finally, Luke’s evening “Emmaus” Gospel sends us forth, as “missionaries of mercy,” assuring us that we will encounter the Risen Lord, today and every day, in “the stranger” we meet along life’s journey, in “the Word that makes our hearts burn within us,” and “in the breaking of bread” (see Luke 24:32, 35). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. HOSPITAL MINISTRY

Pope Francis has declared this a JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY. How can we participate? By performing the Corporal words of mercy. One of the Corporal works of mercy is: VISIT THE SICK.

You are invited to attend an informational gathering to discuss and train for Hospital Ministry. This is a fairly new Ministry of the Archdiocese of San Antonio and is in the process of growing. Please come to learn how to participate in the corporal words of Mercy through HOSPITAL MINISTRY. It is a moment of evangelization and mercy to our brothers and sisters in Christ in a hospital setting. We will meet on Tuesday, April 12, 2015 in the Marian Center beginning at 6:45 p.m. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DRAWN INTO THE STORY “We are witnesses!” The scripture readings for Easter Sunday concentrate on details reported by eyewitnesses. Listen carefully and you will be drawn into the stories yourself. Peter reports the good works Jesus did, his death on the cross, and his resurrection. The passage from John’s Gospel

has us running to the empty tomb with Peter and John and peering inside to see the cloths used to cover Jesus’ body. Psalm 118 sums up our response: “It is wonderful in our eyes!” What resurrection details do we see in our lives today? How have we died to our old lives and been raised up again with Jesus? Let us pay attention to the new life around us. It is wonderful in our eyes. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PRAYER FOR EASTER O Risen Jesus,

may I always seek and find you, think about you, speak to you and

do everything for your honor and glory. Be always my hope, my peace,

my refuge and my help in whom my heart is rooted,

so that I may never be separated from you. Amen -St. Bonaventure

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Fifty years or so ago, it was popular to teach that every Sunday is a “Little Easter.” Today, after several decades of intense liturgical reform, it is more proper to think of today as a “Big Sunday.” On every Sunday of the year, the Church is obliged to assemble, keeping the day
holy. In most places, we hardly attain the goal of gathering all who are in Christ by baptism. Look around today and see what a Big Sunday looks like! Our tradition speaks of remembering, anamnesis, as the antidote to “amnesia,” the tragic forgetting of who God is and who we are as God’s most beloved creation. On this Easter day, we are at our very best. We remember who God is, and we remember who we are in God’s eyes: beloved sons and daughters, reborn to eternal life in baptismal waters. We rekindle our candles and reclaim our baptismal promises. As a “Big Sunday,” today also reflects the character of festivity and leisure that should mark every Lord’s Day. We wear “Sunday best” today, and we may take some time, especially in the northern states, to stroll through a budding garden. It is truly a “Big Sunday,” and how different our lives would be if we took its values and traditions forward into all the Sundays of our lives. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WE REMEMBER YOU, O RISEN LORD
We remember you, O risen Lord, New Covenant at the feast of the cross.
Your resurrection dresses the table for the bread of heaven and the cup of
salvation. Blessed are you!
