by David DircksOn the afternoon of Saturday,

August 17, 2019, over 1,000people settled in to their lawnchairs on the front lawn of Deep-wells Mansion for its annual outdoor concert – this time commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the originalWoodstock Music and Arts Fairof 1969.It was that very weekend 50

years prior that a half millionpeople descended on the smalltown of Bethel, NY for three daysof peace and music. Those threedays would become a symbol foran entire generation – one ofpeace and unity for a countrydeep into the controversial Viet-nam War as well as the civilrights movement. Called “Woodstock at Deep-

wells,” this year’s concert fea-tured the talents of some of LongIsland’s best tribute bands in afive-hour musical event that hadDeepwells Mansion decorated intie-dye curtains and flower-power posters. The music started at 2:30 p.m.

with Katie Pearlman performingthe music of Joni Mitchell andCrosby, Stills, Nash and Young.Then at 3 p.m., Lisa Polizzi’sJanis Joplin Experience broughtthe volume up with an electricset playing tribute to the music ofJanis Joplin. Ms. Polizzi dressed

the part and gave a convincingperformance as Janis Joplin,dancing and gyrating much tothe enjoyment of the audience.The next act was The Kerry Kear-ney Band who played the musicof Jefferson Airplane and JimiHendrix – including Kerry’s ownrendition of Hendrix’s iconic StarSpangled Banner instrumental.The next band, Reckoning, per-formed the music of The GratefulDead. Then the band Dear Pru-dence brought the electric por-tion of the concert to acrescendo with tributes to TheWho, Santana, Mountain, TenYears After, The Beatles andmore.Ending the night on an

acoustic note was Randy Jack-son, frontman of Long Island’s hitband, Zebra. He took the stageand commanded the attention ofthe entire audience with just hisvoice and an acoustic guitar.Zebra became well known onthe charts in the 1980s with hitsincluding “Tell Me What YouWant” and “Who’s Behind TheDoor?” In 2012, Zebra was in-ducted into the Long IslandMusic Hall of Fame. They con-tinue to tour the US. WhenRandy finished his set at Deep-wells, dusk was setting in andthe swarm of audience membersleft Deepwells Farm County Parkfeeling like they had experienced

a piece of history.Nine months in the planning,

Woodstock at Deepwells was notonly a success as a communityevent, it also raised much-needed funds for the DeepwellsFarm Historical Society. Thesefunds will be used for the up-keep of the mansion as well asthe grounds of Deepwells FarmCounty Park. They will also beused to help put on other com-munity events throughout theyear. The Society is already hard at

work putting together their nextevent, The Deepwells HauntedMansion. This event has been asuccessful fund-raising eventover the last few years. It will beheld the weekends of October11-12, 18-19 and 25-26. Formore information, go towww.deepwells.org.

The Mills Pond House wascompleted in 1840 and WilliamWickham and Eliza Mills movedwith their eight children intotheir new home. Their ninthchild, Josephine, would be bornin the house on April 18, 1842.The big house with 34 roomswas rapidly filled by members ofthe Mills family and their domes-tic servants. The large house wasimpressive and “the creation ofsuch a house in a rural Long Is-land community in 1838/40 wasa considerable task and served tounderscore Mills’ prominence.”The house “is the earliest, docu-mented architect-designed struc-ture in the vicinity, a fact thatcertainly escaped no one’sawareness at the time.” (Zachary

Studenroth, “Historical Analysisof Mills Pond,” Part 2, p. 21; partof a larger report, “AdaptiveReuse Report” of the Mills PondHouse prepared for the Smith-town Arts Center in 1977.)To enhance the beauty of his

new home, Mills “purchased nu-merous fruit trees and other or-namentals from Wm. R. Princeand Co. of Flushing, L.I. in1847.”  Mills ordered “two orthree specimens each of, amongothers, European and AmericanMountain Ash, Spanish andWhite Horse Chestnut, AmericanElm and Cypress, Catalpa, Euro-pean Alder, Sugar Maple, andmany varieties of plum, pear andapple trees.  Some of these origi-nal plantings have been identi-fied on the grounds” of the MillsPond House today. “In additionto the unusual trees which wereplanted for their romantic andaesthetic effect,” Mills had “ex-tensive orchards on his home-stead farm” with over a thousandapple trees, “in prime order, andmany of them of the best graftedfruit.” (Zachary Studenroth, op.cit., p. 25.)From insurance policies that

covered the mansion and its de-pendencies, we know that thehouse had an attached kitchen, a

washhouse, a barn with “cow-houses attached,” a carriagehouse, and a cider house that“once stood at the edge of thepond.” (The barns and cow-houses that stood to the west ofthe house were standing in 1977but are gone now.) Other thanthese outbuildings, “there was noother dwelling within eight rodsof the house.” Although thehouse that Mills built was quitelarge, the supporting dependen-cies were modest in size. Evenso, Mildred Smith, WilliamWickham Mills’ great grandchild,described him in the followingway:“He was one of the most

prominent men in Suffolk Co.,known as a man of great discre-tion, of sound judgment in themanagement of his varied inter-ests, and one of the largest andmost successful farmers andstock breeders on Long Island.” Ifthis was true, Mills must have re-lied upon tenants to work hislands and raise his stock. Heowned over 1,750 acres of landand he depended upon the in-come from his lands, as well ashis “investments,” to sustain hishouse and family. The fact thatWilliam Wickham Mills’ estate at

ATTENTION CHUBBIES! Yes, you read that correctly.

My name is Dr. Marc Taczanowski and I’m a Chub. I happen to be skinny at the moment but I’ll always have

a Chubby mindset.

I’ve lost over 70 pounds WITHOUT EXERCISE and for the first time in my adult life I’ve kept it off for over 2 years. Maybe I’ve finally figured things out? Through countless diets, diet books, workout programs and continuing research I feel I’ve learned enough to make better choices. Although many of you know our office to specialize in Sports Injuries, several colleagues prompted me to start a nutrition/weight loss class in the coming year due to my knowledge, success, our reputation and my ability to communicate information.

I’m calling it, “The Kilogram Plan.” You will see why at our first module. This is a 10 week program. That’s it. No perpetuity! I’ve consolidated my

research and organized the classes so that when completed, you’ll have all of the necessary

education to understand why you’re making your food decisions. Then you can IDENTIFY, INTERCEPT

AND IMPLEMENT better choices!

For more information please call our office at 631-584-8783. We will need to limit our class to the first 50 chubs who register. Dates and times to be

announced based on enrollment. If you’re offended by the word Chubby or Fatty, this class may not be for you. No offense. :)

Research hasshown that too muchsitting can be bad forour health. It’s been associated with obe-sity, high blood pres-sure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and cardio-vascular disease. Inaddition, poor sittinghabits as well as pro-longed sitting pos-tures can createmuscular imbalanceswhich will have anoverall negative effecton posture.

Whether it is time spent sittingat work, school, driving, watch-ing TV or eating the averageperson spends about 12 hours aday sitting. Taking micro breakswith stretching, getting out of theseated position and being activefrequently would be ideal, butunfortunately, that is not alwaysa viable option. At a minimum

you should make sure you aresitting in a correct posture.

Try to avoid reading or watch-ing TV in bed or using a laptopin your lap on a regular basis,as these incorrect positions canwreak havoc on your posture.Instead, try sitting in an ergonomic position at adesk/table as shown in the diagram.

Changing habits isnever easy. At firstwhen trying to sit in a betterposture it can be veryuncomfortable. That’sbecause you’re ask-ing certain musclesto start working thatare not used to thework load. Start offslow and build up theduration over timeand eventually sittingin a better posturewill not feel awkward.

The key is to be consciouslyaware and to remind yourselfoften of your posture. Some ofus are fortunate to be remindedof our posture by someone elserecognizing the bad habit. Donot take it as a criticism and bethankful someone cares enoughabout you to create a betterhabit to prevent unnecessarystresses.

Are you Sitting correctly?

by Christine Stevens, CBrGreetings St. James Neighbors!

Welcome to “Coffee with Christine” A lot of discussion goes into

why some houses sell quicklywhile others sit on the market fora while. One of my jobs as a Re-altor is to help you get out ofyour own head, get out of yourown way of selling your homeand get you to try and think likethe buyer/consumer who is scru-tinizing every inch of your home.Many homeowners, can and

do, sell their own homes with noproblem. If the situation arises, however, that assistance isneeded for whatever reason, tohire a Professional Realtor, hereare some things to consider:

1) The Realtor has the “Skyview” advantage of comingon the scene and viewing the

home much like a buyer – thehomeowner who sees their ownhome, day in and day out, is al-most blinded to what can actu-ally be seen. Have you evernoticed your own cobwebs, ifany, the dirt on your switchplates and lower moldings? Nowgo and look – you may be sur-prised what you see now!

2) That said – cleaning those items IS NOT going to sell your

home, it will only help it showprettier.

3) The KEY to selling your home in a timely manner is thepositioning of it on the market atthe time that you are selling –your home vs. sold homes, avail-able homes and homes undercontract. The #1 factor is PRICE –It needs to be priced competi-tively. If a buyer can get some-thing even remotely similar toyour home, even if they have totrade off something like location,they are moving on. I have seenmore buyers say “next” in thispast year than ever before. This isa huge investment and with onehouse prettier than the next, thisgets very frustrating. More andmore homeowners are updatingtheir homes in advance of gettingready to sell. We are seeing a

by Sally WellingerTrees have been on Earth

longer than humans, but there isso much to learn about them.We know trees respond to theirenvironment. Plants are not ableto walk around, but they cangrow or move their leaves to-ward the sunlight. If you have never noticed this

before, try putting a plant in awindow and watch how it growstoward the light. Trees in the for-est might have unusual shapedtrunks, which is often due to thetree trying to grow toward thelight. Also, trees can control how

much water is released. Theyhave these small openings,mostly on the bottom of theirleaves, that will open if the plantneeds to release water, but closeif it needs to hold the water.These holes are called stomatesand help the plant to survive. Another response is when

trees grow bumps called galls.These galls are responses to anirritation. Most of the time thesegrowths are an adaption to keepthe irritation in one area. For ex-ample, if an insect lays eggs in-side a leaf; the leaf may growtissue around it to keep the eggsconfined. Other times, galls canbe from a fungus. Sometimes afungus, will cause a tree to growa bunch of new cells in an area. One example of this on Long

Island is black knot on cherrytrees. While walking in the for-est, if you notice a tree with a bigball on its trunk; it’s probably ablack knot on a cherry tree. Sci-entists have known about theability for plants to respond totheir environment for a longtime. What we didn’t know until re-

cently is that trees actually com-municate with one another. It’snot quite like the apple trees inthe Wizard or Oz or the Ents inLord of the Rings, but they docommunicate and help eachother.

Trees do not com-municate aboveground. Their roots de-velop intricate path-ways with each other,even with differentspecies. In the soil,under the ground,there are amazinglines of communica-tion and interaction,similar to beneath thesurface of the ocean. About 30 years ago,

Suzanne Simard, a sci-entist, wanted to see ifa gas in the air around one treecould travel to another tree. Itturned out that chemicals fromone tree can pass to another un-derground through their roots.This passing of chemicals wasnot random, it was intentional.  Suzanne Simard tried this with

two different tree species. Onewas a fir tree, which is an ever-green and the other was a birchtree, a deciduous tree, that losesits leaves in the winter. In thespring, when the birch treegrows its leaves and can produc-tively make its own food, it sendsmore nutrients over to the firtree. In the winter, when the firtree is still productive and thebirch tree has no leaves, morenutrients are sent from the fir treeto the birch tree. Dr. Simard also noticed that

“mother trees” tend to send morenutrients to her offspring than totrees that are not genetically re-lated to her, although she sendsnutrients and messages to all. Most of this communication

happens with help of another or-ganism in the forest, the fungi(often mushrooms). The fungusroot, called mycorrhiza is awhite dense mass of roots andhelps transfer chemical messagesfrom one tree to the next. Whatis interesting is that these mes-sages are sent to specific trees,not random trees. Trees are able to send warn-

ings through chemical messages

to other trees, which leaves mewondering what else they cancommunicate about. If this has sparked an interest

in learning more about thetremendous communication net-work below ground, check outPeter Wohlleben’s books, TheHidden Life of Trees and Can YouHear the Trees Talking? (Chil-dren’s Book) and SuzanneSimard’s book, Fantastic Fungi. These books will make you lookat a forest in a whole differentway!

Dear ron,I am recently married to a man who has an ex-

wife and children from that marriage. For the mostpart, my husband and his ex were in touch witheach other about the kids. She recently reachedout directly to me and asked if I would be inter-ested in getting together to talk, learn about eachother and about how our families can get along for

the sake of the kids. At the beginning of my rela-tionship with my new husband, there was a lot oftension and upset. So I did my best to be distant asto not create any problems. I am hoping that therequest is from the right frame of mind butwouldn’t want to find myself in a problem. Doesthis sound like a good idea?

–Getting Together?

Dear Getting Together? It sounds like there may be a genuine effort to

reach across a common divide for the sake of thechildren. I say meet her half way, but keep a fewthings in mind. First make sure that you meet in aneutral place so everyone starts out even. Perhapsat a park with or without the kids. Second – makesure that the conversations focus on making twogreat home lives for the children rather than anypast difficulties in your relationship with her andher relationship with her ex. Next – be openminded. She may be looking to understand moreabout you and your role as step parent. Perhaps herstyle of parenting may be different and vice versa.Hear what she has to say and take everythingunder advisement if it feels like something is notquite right. You can always come back and discussit with your husband. And finally, keep in mindthat if the conversation turns to something less thanyour expectation, you can always step away andend the visit. Look – bottom line – when all theparents and step-parents can be on the same page,the children will grow nicely. Sounds like a verymature start to the children’s new life!

by William KentThe intensive listening effort

demanded by untreated hearingloss can be very stressful. Expertsbelieve that even if you have amild hearing loss that is notbeing treated, cognitive load in-creases significantly. Researchalso shows that unaddressedhearing loss is frequently associ-ated with other physical, mentaland emotional health issues thatdiminish everyday quality of lifefunctions.  Withdrawal from social situa-

tions, a lessened ability to cope,and reduced overall psychologi-cal health are a few of the condi-tions associated withunaddressed hearing loss. Oftenpeople with untreated hearingloss feel angry, frustrated, anx-ious, isolated and depressed. A 2014 study showed that

hearing loss is associated with anincrease risk of depression inadults in all age groups, but mostpronounced in 18 to 69 yearolds. Another study conducted inItaly, looked at working adults

35 to 55 years of age, with un-treated mild to moderate age re-lated hearing loss and found thatthey were more prone to depres-sion, anxiety, and interpersonalsensitivity than those with nohearing issues.Here’s the good news. For the

vast majority of people withhearing loss, intervention canhelp. Research shows that peo-ple with loss of hearing, who arefit with hearing instruments, seeimprovements in their ability tocommunicate in most situations.In addition, with those samepeople, mental health often ral-lies and depressive symptoms areoften reduced. Many regainemotional stability, have an eas-ier time in joining groups, andbecome more socially engaged.They experience a greater senseof safety and independence andfeel more in control of their livesand see a general improvementin their overall quality of life.Many even report improvementsin their relationships at homeand/or at work.

Simply put, the majority ofHearing instrument users saythey are satisfied with changesthat have occurred in their livesdue to hearing instrument usage.Many say they feel better aboutthemselves, and life overall as aresult. Getting a hearing test is the

first step in your quest for help.In most cases health insurancecovers all or most of the costs forsuch testing. If hearing instru-ments are recommended by yourhearing healthcare provider, youshould be given, in most situa-tions, options that make it easierto make that decision. Areassuch as cosmetic, ease of use,and financial are concerns that adedicated provider will help youwith in making a correct deci-sion.Wearing hearing instruments

today, compared to years ago, isnot the same; results are dramati-cally different and ease of use isthe focal point of today’s digitaltechnology. With most instru-ments being totally automatic,and some being totally invisible,it makes hearing instrumentusage much more appealing andsatisfying.  Treat yourself. Get a hearing

test. Most health insurers providefor an annual hearing test withlittle or no out of pocket ex-pense. Start listening to and en-joying life again. Call toschedule that test before you for-get. It’s worth 30 minutes of yourtime, isn’t it?

Essential Oils& ChildrenWe love,love, love ouressential oils,right?

And natu-rally, we are excited to share ouramazing experiences with othersso that they too can enjoy themyriad of health benefits avail-able, with NO SIDE EFFECTS!

It is also a natural inclinationto want to use them on our chil-dren. But many hesitate to ask,“Is this safe enough to apply tomy child’s skin, to diffuse in theirroom, or even to ingest?”

I notice that people raise thebar of acceptable standardswhen deciding if a productcan/should be used by their chil-dren.  And rightly so.

First, we love and care for ourchildren and want only the bestfor them. Second, we know thata child’s system is more delicatethan ours. Their body experi-ences rapid growth during manyphases on their way to becomingadults…from birth to infant totoddler, to preschool and schoolage, and into adolescence… andtheir physical, emotional, andbrain development can be easilydisrupted.

I use essential oils on my ownchildren daily and confidentlypromote its use. We’ve had sometruly wonderful experiences overthe last decade and I want allparents to reach for essential oilswith trust that it is safe to do soand that their experiences willalso be wonderful and life-en-hancing!

That being said, it’s also impor-tant to follow these best practicesto assure safe and effective useon your children.

Best Practices for Parents & CaregiversUse only the best. The most

important first step is to select anessential oil of the highest qual-ity, with verifiable and transpar-ent testing. Essential oils are safe,effective and very affordable.However, not all essential oilsare created equal!  Be an edu-cated consumer and use onlycertified pure, therapeutic gradeessential oils for your family.Essential oils are potent and

concentrated. You only need asmall amount to achieve the de-sired results. Dosages for chil-dren will always be much lessthan an adult because they havesmaller, developing bodies andrequire less than adults do.However, kids are NOT just

tiny adults. Their skin is delicateand more sensitive than adults,so always dilute oils before ap-plying them topically on yourchildren. Diluting essential oilsdoes NOT minimize their effec-tiveness; it merely slows absorp-tion through the dermal layers sothe body has more time to me-tabolize its chemistry.

How much is recommended?Use this chart as a guide!Rather than increase the

amount used in a single applica-tion, simply increase the fre-quency if more oil is desired.(This applies to adults, too!)Applying essential oils to the

bottom of the feet is a goodplace to start. Reflex points

found on the feet and hands cor-respond to specific organs, mus-cles, bones and body systemsand gentle massage on certainpoints has the ability to affectthese systems. For instance, mas-saging your child’s toes can easehis or her head and teeth pains,massaging the sole of the footjust under the pad can sootheupper abdominal area, and mas-saging the sole of the foot justabove the heel can soothe thelower abdominal area.

Simple Steps to Teach Your Children

1. keep it Simple!• Pick an essential oil with anaroma that is pleasing to yourchild.

• Start with one or two essentialoils and be patient at it be-comes familiar to your child.

• Wait a few weeks to introducenew aromas.

2. Make it Special!• Create a morning, after-school, or bedtime routine, of-fering them a personalmoment with you as you mas-sage the essential oil on thebottom their feet. Be fullypresent to them in this mo-ment and make them feel spe-cial.

• Empower them by invitingthem to apply the essential oilto their own feet, or even tolet them massage oils on yourfeet.

3. Drawing Out Their Natural Intuition

• Let them smell a few of themand pick the one they like thebest.

• You will notice over time thatthey may be instinctivelydrawn to the very oil theyneed in that moment. Beginby asking them which oil
