MESSAGE FROM JACKI TAYLOR, CEOOn behalf of the Save the Family staff and those we serve, thank you for your interest in learning more about our mission-driven work to equip families to address poverty, overcome homelessness and achieve self-sufficiency. Throughout our 30 years of service, we’ve been steadfast in helping families overcome barriers to self-sufficiency, thus permanently ending their homelessness and improving their lives. Each year, Save the Family helps homeless families achieve brighter futures through our three-pillar approach: housing, case coordination and support services for adults and children. In addition, we are the service provider to hundreds of low-income families residing within affordable housing units provided by our affiliate – ARM of Save the Family.

Recently, through our region’s coordinated entry efforts, we have learned that 50 new families are falling into homelessness each week. These numbers, by themselves, are unacceptable. When coupled with the fact that homeless, “doubled up” families are not included in this number, the overall homeless family count becomes staggering. Through our experience we’ve garnered the ability to understand why families fall into homelessness. The circumstances of poverty, unaffordable rental markets, job loss, eviction, domestic violence, and physical and mental health issues are all contributing factors.

At the Save the Family, our focused efforts are derived from three core values: stable homes, safe children, and strong families. By providing stable housing, homeless families are able to rebuild their “foundation,” where a safe and encouraging environment is created, so both, parents and children can flourish. Together with the utilization of evidence-based interventions that equip families with the skills needed to achieve financial and housing stability, Save the Family is building stronger families, granting them opportunities to rewrite their future.

Together, with other community-centric individuals like yourself, we will continue changing lives.

In partnership,

HOUSING

Transitional HousingFamilies in this program often need to learn basic life skills, address physical and mental health issues, and overcome trauma before entering mainstream housing.

Rapid RehousingFamilies in this program often need help to repair past evictions, secure employment, or increase income. Support is scaled back over time as the family becomes capable of paying the full rent without support.

Step Up HousingWorking poor homeless families (i.e. doubled up, living in their cars, couch surfing) are provided with 12-24 months of housing and support services to help them stabilize, focus on savings, and build financial independence.

Supportive Services for Veteran FamiliesFamilies in this program are military veterans that are currently homeless or at risk of homelessness. This program provides short-term rental assistance and specialized case coordination services to help the family connect with available veteran and community resources.

We have four unique housing programs to address the particular circumstances of each family, combined with a variety of supportive services for children and adults.

We follow a 10-month program model to help homeless families achieve permanent housing. However, the majority of families in our programs can secure permanent housing within six months – a testament to the success of our programs and ability to help families overcome their struggles and build better lives.

FAMILIES HELPED EACH YEAR.

SUPPORTIVE SERVICES

Our services are based on national, standardized best practices to reduce family homelessness.

Case Coordination ServicesOnce the family is housed, parents meet a case coordinator to help them identify and address goals to ensure their long-term housing and financial stability. Case coordinators utilize best practice case management models to prevent recurrent homelessness (Critical Time Intervention, Progressive Engagement, Trauma Informed Care and Motivational Interviewing). By combining a highly personalized approach and focused resources that engage families, Save the Family is helping families learn and practice new behaviors and critical thinking through guided self-initiative.

Career Development ServicesAn array of services focused on securing gainful employment at a livable wage are provided. These include career coaching, job-finding assistance, job-readiness workshops, budgeting workshops, 1:1 financial coaching, access to computers, job-board and staff assistance, and professional clothing/shoes, tools, and transportation assistance.

Parent Support ServicesClasses and activities structured around the need to increase self-sufficiency and promotion of improving family practices include: life-skills and parenting workshops, domestic violence/trauma support groups, food pantry and household closet, fee assistance for academic needs, and volunteer attorney-provided legal services.

CHILDREN’S SERVICES

In order to halt cycles of homelessness and poverty, we place a significant focus on the needs of children. Save the Family has a unique opportunity to make a positive and profound impact on the lives of more than 1,200 children each year.

School-aged children have access to after-school and summer programming where they have opportunities to engage in creative, educational, and structured activities.

Specialized classes are provided that center on avoiding risky behaviors and addressing traumatic events, such as:

• domestic violence• drug abuse in the home• gang violence

Drop-in childcare is provided so that parents of young children can attend classes, support groups, engage in career development, meet with their case coordinator, attend interviews, and address physical and mental health-related needs.

Our children’s programs can also help identify educational delays and assess emotional/behavioral stability.

OUR PROGRAMS ENHANCE

EACH CHILD’S PROGRESS IN SCHOOL THROUGH

TUTORING AND IMPROVING

SELF-ESTEEM.

On-site supportive services are provided and include case coordination and adults and children’s programming. The community provides a fitness center, computer lab, playground, and community gathering spaces.

In 1992, the Affordable Rental Movement (ARM) was incorporated as a separate, but affiliated nonprofit entity of Save the Family to develop affordable housing for low-income families.

The lack of affordable housing for low and extremely low income families remains a pervasive problem to this day.

Each tenant in ARM has access to Save the Family’s parents’ and children’s supportive services. Parents are encouraged to participate in career development services to help them increase income. An emphasis is placed on improving parenting and budgeting skills, and supporting children’s educational needs.

Families referred to this program are suffering from multiple issues that make it difficult or impossible to reach self-sufficiency. For these extremely vulnerable families, permanent housing is the best option.
