CAE Application Methodology for Curtain Airbag Development

ABSTRACT

The side curtain airbag has become an important part

of the occupant restraint system for side impact and rollover protection. The main function is providing an “inflated” bag between the occupant head and door windows, to reduce injury of head contact to door windows or “hard” object. Besides, some CABs have to keep inflation during vehicle rollover event for a few seconds.

Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) is often used to help side curtain airbag design. Many researches proving the CAE-based side curtain airbag design procedure helps to reduce the material cost and time duration of the airbag design process.

This paper presents the CAE methodology for CAB development, and using MADYMO to perform CAB static deployment and dynamic impact simulation. The results could provide engineers for design reference.
