August 30, 2020 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

irst Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9 All of the Scripture readings for this weekend touch on the price of faithfulness. The first

reading is one of the laments of the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah bemoans the usual fate of the Lord’s prophets—they are rejected and derided as troublesome messengers of bad news. But Jeremiah is trapped. He cannot keep silent because the Word of the Lord consumes him from within.

econd Reading: Romans 12:1-2

As the Letter to the Romans unfolds, the apostle Paul suggests that living the life of faith may have its costs.

ospel: Matthew 16:21-27

In this portion of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus teaches that suffering is an unavoidable consequence of discipleship.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of August 30

RCIA SESSIONS BEGIN IN OCTOBER Do you know someone who would like to become a

Catholic? Do you know an adult Catholic who, for one reason or another, never received their First Communion? Do you know an adult Catholic who never received Confirmation? If you answered ‘Yes’ to one or more of these questions, I ask you to please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 973-539-2141, ext. 15 so that I can speak with them about how they can become Catholic or receive First Communion and Confirmation.

The RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process for people to prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. In the midst of a global pandemic, we are working on a plan to conduct our classes that will likely be a combination of in person, livestreaming and distance learning. But be assured that we will have an RCIA class this year, and, as always, it will be a joy and a privilege to guide our candidates and catechumens to the fullness of sacramental life in the Catholic Church.

PLEASE PRAY FOR MEMBERS OF OUR PARISH

August 30, 2020 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

TAKE UP YOUR CROSS

[Jesus] turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does but as human beings do. […]

“Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 16: 21-27)

Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy.

In his book Leaping: Revelations and Epiphanies, Brian Doyle writes:

“I know a boy with brain cancer. He’s 16 years old. He isn’t battling cancer. It’s not something to

defeat. He is enduring it with the most energy and creativity and patience he can muster. He says the

first year he had cancer was awful because of the fear and vomiting and surgery and radiation and

chemotherapy and utter exhaustion. But he says that first year was also wonderful, because he

learned to savor every moment of his days, and because he met amazing people he would never have

met, and because his family and friends rallied around him with ferocious relentless humor, and

because he learned that he was a deeper and stronger and more inventive and more patient soul than

he had ever imagined.

“He also learned about fear, he says, because he was terrified and remains so, but he learned that

he can sometimes channel his fear and turn it into the energy he needs to raise money for cancer

research. Since he was diagnosed with cancer he has helped raise nearly $100,000 . . .”

Brian Doyle, who himself died of a brain tumor three years ago at the age of 60, learned from his

young friend that “if we celebrate grace under duress rather than the illusion of total victory we will be

less surprised and more prepared when illness and evil lurch into our lives, as they always will; and

maybe we will be braver and better people if we know we cannot obliterate such things, but only wield

oceans of humor and patience and creativity against then.”

It’s a natural and understandable reaction to avoid whatever is unpleasant, uncomfortable, stressful,

and hurtful. In today’s Gospel, Peter simply wants to protect Jesus from the suffering that awaits — but

Jesus sharply rebukes Peter for trying to diminish or skirt the cross because it is difficult. To take up

one’s cross — whether that cross is dealing with cancer or teaching in a parish religious education

program — is not a “battle” of good over evil but a

means for bringing God’s promise of resurrection

into our lives and the loves of those we love. In

“dying” to ourselves, Jesus says, we become

something greater, that in letting go of the

temporary and ephemeral we become richer, that

in the suffering we endure we become stronger, in

the failures we experience we become

wiser. (Connections)

In Christ’s Peace,

Father John

Page 6: 973-Aug 30, 2020  · Respect Life Sue and Dave O’Dougherty 973-993-3068 Safe Environment Linda Macios 973-539-2141 ... comfortable with going back to Mass, or if you have any underlying

THE CROSS AND THE CULTURE As painful as it was, Jesus was not to be dissuaded

from his call. The glory of the Resurrection had to pass through the suffering and humiliation of the cross. As we pass through our own anguish, we eventually rise again and discover new truths about our divine call.

Adults: What have I discovered through my own crosses?

Children: For what difficulty or cross will I ask God’s help?

A Family Perspective: As you gather as a family, talk about what we expect God to be doing in our world and in our family life. Do we sometimes forget to let God be God for us? That is, do we sometimes get discouraged because God doesn't act in our world in the ways that we expect?

CONFIRMATION CATECHISTS NEEDED

Each year, we recruit new catechists for Confirmation Prep. Confirmation Prep is a two year program. Catechists meet with the same group of approximately ten candidates each year. Peer Ministers, juniors and seniors of the parish, assist with each group. The two year program includes service, study, prayer, retreat and community building so that the candidate will feel strengthened in their faith. We anticipate having virtual and face to face sessions one Sunday night per month, September through May. If you are interested, please contact our Youth Minister and Confirmation Coordinator, Clare Ettensohn at [email protected].

FAITH FORMATION AT ASSUMPTION

We have a new name! Assumption Religious Education is now known as Assumption Faith Formation and our Faith Formation 2020-2021 registration site is open. Please visit the Faith Formation page of the parish website and select from these options: • Family Formation for grades kindergarten through

8th. This approach will appeal to all ages regardless of learning style or special needs. $175 per family; an additional $50 materials fee for 2nd graders.

• Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This is a Montessori approach to the religious formation of the young child ages 3 to 12. Presently, we are accepting new participants ages 3 to 6 to join us in Level I. True Cost or Fair Share.

• Confirmation Prep for our 9th and 10th graders. This will be a blended approach. Some virtual and some face to face sessions. $100 per candidate, per year.

• Classes for our First Communicants will be part of the virtual Family Formation model. There will be additional virtual sessions specifically for 2nd graders. If our new reality allows, we will also have some face to face time with 2nd graders.

Please contact [email protected] to discus any questions about our upcoming programs.

Prayer for Our Deacons Lord Jesus Christ, Servant of all, Send your Spirit upon our deacons and their wives as they serve your Church. Give them eyes to see the needs of your people. Give them a discerning mind to know your truth. Give them a generous spirit when they are tired but needed. Give them a humble heart when their work goes unnoticed. Give them peace of mind in obedience and service. Give them health of body so they may serve with strength. Make them fertile ground for your inspiration and love. Comfort them when they question themselves and their ministry. Grant them grace as they age so they may share your wisdom. Make their hearts like yours so they may love your people. Amen.
