EVENT CALENDAR Gift cards & gift certificates NOW AVAILABLE Blues Boulevard Jazz will honor local jazz legend Moss Mack on Oct 30 with a tribute by the musician’s friends, former bandmates, and local musicians on Thursday, Oct. 30. Moss says he was a reluctant student when his mother started giving him piano lessons when he was 5 or 6 years old. He later ditched the piano for his first love, the tenor sax, picking up flute and clarinet along the way. After attending Greenville’s Sterling High School, he went on to attend college at Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee where he formed a jazz group in collaboration with the FSU marching band. The group would win the first ever National Collegiate Jazz Festival held in Mobile, Alabama. When asked why he was inspired toward jazz, Moss says that “In any art, you get the chance to express yourself. I’ve always liked free expression.” Jazz has always provided him the needed outlet for that expression, he says, and what he enjoys most is the improvisation that is almost a built-in component of playing jazz music. Moss has played The Peace Center with such acts as Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, The Four Tops, and Dionne Warwick. His favorite musicians include John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Myles Davis, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, and Max Roach and says his own style of play has been most influenced by Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Harold Land. Join BBJ as we salute a local music pioneer in this first in a series held to honor, benefit, and pay tribute to local jazz legends. True Blues has become a Greenville and Upstate South Carolina mainstay since its inception in 1990. They started as a power trio with Joey Gunter on guitar and vocals, Pete Cash on bass, and Pete’s brother Joe Cash on drums. In 2003, they added Bill Pappas from Athens, GA on keyboards and guitar. True Blues has come to be known as “Greenville’s House Band.” They will rock the house this Halloween in True Blues style for two high energy shows! Blues Boulevard Jazz will honor local jazz legend Moss Mack on Oct 30 with a tribute by the musician’s friends, former bandmates, and local musicians on Thursday, Oct. 30.

Moss says he was a reluctant student when his mother started giving him piano lessons when he was 5 or 6 years old. He later ditched the

piano for his first love, the tenor sax, picking up flute and clarinet along the way. After attending Greenville’s Sterling High School, he went on to attend

college at Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee where he formed a jazz group in collaboration with the FSU marching band. The group

would win the first ever National Collegiate Jazz Festival held in Mobile, Alabama.

When asked why he was inspired toward jazz, Moss says that “In any art, you get the chance to express yourself. I’ve always liked free expression.” Jazz has always provided him the

needed outlet for that expression, he says, and what he enjoys most is the improvisation that is almost a built-in component of playing

jazz music. Moss has played The Peace Center with such acts as Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, The Four Tops, and Dionne Warwick. His favorite

musicians include John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Myles Davis, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, and Max Roach and says his own style of play has been most

influenced by Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Harold Land.
