There is no getting away from it: studying for a university degree in the UK can be expensive. With many UK universities now charging students from the UK and elsewhere in the EU up to £9,000 a year for undergraduate tuition – and often substantially more to students from overseas and/or for postgraduate courses – we know that many prospective students, and their parents, worry about graduating with large debts or fear they cannot afford to go to university at all.

LCA Business School can help ease these worries in a number of ways.

First of all, as LCA does not have the same overheads as a large university, with its extensive grounds and staff payroll, it’s able to charge less without reducing the quality of the educational experience.

For entry in September 2014, tuition fees start at just £5,950 for a standard undergraduate degree programme.

But low tuition fees are only part of our story:

• The way in which we timetable your lectures and tutorials provides you with a great opportunity to work part-time. You could therefore put the money you earn from part-time work towards your fees and living costs instead of taking out a loan or relying on an advance from your parents. International students are entitled to work up to 20 hours a week during term time.

• Our academic timetable will also help you minimise your travel costs should you decide to continue living at home or find accommodation some distance from the campus.

• Your LCA fee includes a free copy of the core text book for each module – you will not receive a list of expensive books that need to be bought, as is common elsewhere.

• All eligible UK and EU students are entitled to take out a loan from Student Finance to cover tuition fees and living expenses. These loans do not have to be paid back until you are earning at least £21,000 a year.

Many private universities actually charge less than the public universities now as a result of the fee increase across England and Wales. I can’t imagine going to a public university and having to pay up to £9,000 a year.”

As a student destination, the attractions of Central London are second to none.In addition to the multitude of world-renowned galleries, museums and well-known tourist attractions, the centre of London offers endless choices in terms of music venues, pubs, clubs, theatres and cinemas.

For sports fans, London is home to several Premiership football clubs and Wembley Stadium, Lords Cricket Ground and Twickenham rugby ground are also close at hand.

With a total student population of around 900,000 from 200 countries, London offers an unrivalled multicultural experience and is one of the most popular student destinations in the world.

LCA Business School is located in the very heart of London: between Hatton Garden – the centre of the diamond and precious metals trade – and Smithfield Market, one of London’s oldest historic markets. It is on the very edge of London’s business and financial district – and many of London’s most iconic landmarks, such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Old Bailey, the Barbican and now the Shard are clearly visible from LCA.

Your learning experience at LCA Business School

On all of our undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses you will have a minimum of 12 hours’ lectures and tutorials a week (so-called ‘contact time’ with an academic member of staff); this is more than on offer at many traditional UK universities.In addition, module ‘surgeries’ are offered once a week – these are designed to give students the chance to ask an academic member of staff questions, clarify any misunderstandings or simply to debate the topics being studied.

Outside of the core lectures and tutorials and the module surgeries there are regular guest lectures and optional short courses.

LCA’s online campus, ‘My LCA’, provides students with a wealth of additional information, including lecture notes and access to a range of study material.

Each course module is delivered through a combination of large group lectures – where the main ideas and concepts are presented – and tutorials where students are broken into smaller groups for an interactive discussion and analysis of the lecture content.

At LCA, rather than spread out your lectures and tutorials unevenly over the course of the working week – as is usual at a more traditional university – we concentrate your 12 hours of contact time into four intensive three hour blocks, across just three days. These 12 hours per week are supported by subject surgeries and guest lectures to give you an excellent educational package.

We believe our timetable gives you the best chance of securing a meaningful part-time job during the working week and thus the chance of simultaneously enhancing your employability and of easing any money worries you may have.

You will be assessed through a mix of assignments, examination and group work.

Support and facilities

LCA’s campus at 19 Charterhouse Street comprises six floors of teaching space, spread over a total area of some 65,000 square feet. The prestigious facilities, close to many iconic City of London landmarks, were refurbished to a high standard in early 2011. There are now five floors devoted to teaching and rooms range in size from some that can accommodate up to 200 students in a theatre style seating arrangement, to others that are perfect for highly interactive tutorials. All rooms boast the latest audio visual equipment and there’s air conditioning for when the weather gets warm.

Also within the Charterhouse Street campus are three computer labs as well as areas where you can meet and socialise with your fellow students. The library on the 4th floor houses, amongst other relevant publications, copies of all the core text books and also provides desks and computers for quiet study. Students can also take advantage of three lending and two reference libraries in the local area – these include Shoe Lane Library, moments from LCA, the Barbican Library and City Business Library.

Furthermore, LCA students are entitled to the online facilities of Anglia Ruskin University for a huge range of business research, journals and papers.

You will also be appointed a Personal Tutor who will be available to support you throughout your studies.

Our team in Student Services based on the ground floor are on hand to provide help and support on both academic and non academic matters.

Your student life

Student life involves a great deal more than just lectures and tutorials; reading and coursework; assignments and exams. Student life isn’t just about academic work.Your time at LCA offers the opportunity not only to develop your academic and business knowledge but also to develop your social skills and confidence. It’s a time you will look back on as being a key turning point in your life.

At LCA we do all we can to ensure you quickly make new friends and feel at home here. In particular, LCA’s Student Society plays an active part in helping students enjoy a range of social activities away from lectures.

The Student Society is run by students with support from LCA and provides a social forum as well as the chance to network with students on other courses, including international students from over 100 different countries around the world.

As activities are planned and organised by students, members get the chance to practise key business skills including marketing, budgeting and managing people. Every activity or club is a chance to learn as well as enjoy.

In recent months the Society has organised a number of parties, sports events, visits to London attractions, talent contests as well as guest lectures featuring speakers from the world of business.

Sometimes private colleges are perceived to have less of a university feel around them, so we wanted to create this by offering events, parties and sports teams for students to enjoy aside from studying.”

Making your views known

At LCA Business School, your opinions matter! LCA is committed to listening to its students and to taking their views into account in the development of our courses and their delivery. Over the course of your time at LCA, you will be offered a number of opportunities to provide feedback on your study course and your lecturers and to have your say generally on how the School is run. The School regularly conducts surveys and student representatives sit on a number of LCA’s Committees.

LCA’s Student Council serves as the official student voice within LCA. Chaired by the President, who is elected from amongst the student representatives sitting on the Council, the Council has the specific responsibility of representing the interests and concerns of the student body and of communicating any issues raised by faculty or administration to students.

Sitting on Student Council also builds key business skills for students: communication methods, formal meetings, minutes and decision making. This all adds to a graduate’s CV and goes some way to explaining the popularity and competition for places.

LCA offers ten degree courses covering the main areas of business and management:

All courses are offered for full-time study over three years and students can choose to start in either September or January.

In addition to providing students with a thorough grounding in business and management theory, there is a great deal of emphasis on the practical side of business. As a consequence of our academic staff remaining actively involved in business practice, the result is that cutting edge subject development is regularly brought to the classroom context.

Many of our Business and Management courses share a common first year. This allows you to gain a broad understanding of the key areas of business which will enable you to appreciate the importance of the different functions – such as HR, marketing, finance – to the overall success of the organisation. This will help you in your future career irrespective of the path you take.

We know it can be difficult to decide the exact direction you wish your studies to take. The structure of our business and management pathways allows you to transfer to one of our other degree courses, should you wish to.

You therefore do not need to decide your area of specialisation now; you can do so after you join LCA.

Do please note that some of our pathways do not offer the chance to change specialization once you have started at LCA, so do please contact us to ensure you understand the options open to you.

January startStudents joining in January attend summer school in their first year so that, by the September after they enrol, they are in a position to join the students who started their degree the previous September. January entrants then follow a standard academic calendar (September through to May) in their second and third years. Students starting in January therefore get the chance of completing their degree in two and a half years. In view of its academic calendar in the first year, the January start is sometimes referred to as the catch-up option.

Undergraduate, Postgraduate and ACCA courses with pre-sessional EnglishFor students who do not meet LCA’s standard English language requirements, LCA offers the option of a course of study (undergraduate, postgraduate or ACCA as appropriate) that includes a pre-sessional English language course.

The pre-sessional English Language course comprises five full days per week of teaching over eight weeks.

Doug Beardon MA, LLM, FCA, FCCA, AIIT

After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and obtaining post qualification experience in the tax department of Coopers and Lybrand, Doug lectured in taxation at the University of East London. He holds a Master’s degree in European and Intellectual Property Law and Taxation from the University of London and is an Associate of the Institute of Indirect Taxation. A partner in Barcant Beardon, a firm of chartered accountants, Doug provides expert taxation advice to individuals and businesses and continues to lecture on tax for a number of professional bodies and academic and commercial organisations. Doug is developing his personal interest and the firm’s expertise in the taxation and financial implications of ageing.

Dr. John Lang BSc, MBA, MPhil and PhD has been involved in higher education and training for the past 18 years. Holding both a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from the University of Bradford together with an MPhil and a PhD from Judge Business School, at the University of Cambridge, Dr Lang has held academic positions at a number of universities including the University of Cambridge, Boston University and the Singapore Institute of Management.

Over the course of his career, Dr Lang has also worked as an operations manager, project manager, systems analyst and as a management consultant. He has held managerial positions with Dun & Bradstreet both in the UK and the USA; with Bain and Co. in the USA; and with BT and The London Stock Exchange in the UK.

Your ACCA study options at LCAFor students sitting ACCA exams, LCA Business School offers a great deal of flexibility in terms of study mode, start date and length of course.

Students who do not need a visa to study in the UK have the option of studying either full-time or part-time. Classes for part-time students take place in the evenings – for further information and a timetable of forthcoming classes, simply visit www.lca.anglia.ac.uk. In addition students from the UK or elsewhere in the EU are entitled to register for classes that form part of the course outlined below.

The Flagship Course – preparing you for 6 papersLCA’s Flagship Course prepares students for six ACCA exams, over the course of two semesters, each of twelve weeks. Each semester comprises 10 weeks of three full days of teaching followed by revision classes.

Students receive six hours of teaching on each of the three days of classes making a total of 60 hours’ teaching for each paper in addition to revision classes. The 2 days of revision per paper are totally focused on exam questions, exam technique and general exam preparation.

Students can join the Flagship Course in either January – sitting their first ACCA exams in the June – or in July sitting their first exams in the December.

Exemptions

The ACCA will grant examination exemptions if you have a relevant degree – such as a Business Studies or Accounting and Finance degree or another recognised accounting qualification. If you believe that your existing qualifications may exempt you from some ACCA papers, then you should consider applying to ACCA for the award of exemptions. But you should note that you will need to apply for exemptions by 31 July in respect of the December exam sitting and by 31 January for the June sitting.

Time and Planning are important!

ACCA rules and regulations are strict.

There are deadlines by which you have to be registered with ACCA to be eligible to sit exams (other than F1, F2 and F3) in forthcoming exam sessions. For precise details of these deadlines, please visit www.accaglobal.com. As a guide, you will need to be fully registered at least three and a half months before the exam sitting.

And you should allow an absolute minimum of six weeks to complete the registration process.

It is therefore absolutely essential that you plan ahead.

Your Tier 4 SponsorIn January 2012, LCA Business School formally became a ‘branch campus’ of Anglia Ruskin University. The University will act as the Tier 4 Sponsor for LCA students requiring a student visa to study at LCA under UK Border Agency (UKBA) regulations. For successful LCA applicants it will be Anglia Ruskin University that issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) that you need to apply for your visa.

As Anglia Ruskin University is defined by the UKBA as a ‘UK higher education institution’, overseas students on undergraduate, postgraduate or ACCA courses of study at LCA have the right to work up to 20 hours per week during term-time and full-time during vacations.

Applying for your visaIn order to apply for your Tier 4 (General) Student visa, you must have received your CAS number from LCA Business School and have fulfilled the following criteria:

• You will first need to have a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). This will only be issued once you have met all the conditions of our offer of a place and have provided us with all the necessary documentation including copies of your examination certificates and your passport. A CAS will also not be issued until you have paid our minimum deposit and a non-refundable administration fee of £25.

• You need to have the required funds, in full and available, for the minimum period of 28 days before the submission of your visa application. Students must sign a declaration (on the visa form) confirming that the funds will be available for the duration of your Tier 4 visa. Students must also be prepared to provide evidence of how the funds have been used (receipts of accommodation, transport, etc.)

As the UK now operates a points based system for the granting of the Tier 4 visa, you will need to achieve a certain amount of points to succeed on your application. Points are awarded for your CAS and for demonstrating that you have sufficient funds to cover the costs of the course and living in the UK.

We recommend you allow yourself ample time to apply for your Tier 4 Visa. Should you have any questions or require additional assistance, please contact LCA’s Compliance Office and please refer to www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk.

Accommodation Whilst LCA does not have any halls of residence of its own, it is able to advise on how to go about finding accommodation in London.

English LanguageTo successfully complete any of our courses, you will need to be proficient in written and spoken English. For students who need help with their English, it is now possible to study for a degree or an ACCA course of study that incorporates a pre-sessional English Language course.

Funding your studiesAt LCA Business School we do everything we can to ensure that we offer you quality higher education at an affordable price.

In addition to keeping our tuition fees as low as possible, the way we schedule your lectures and tutorials gives you the best chance of finding a meaningful, well-paid job during the working week. Working part-time can definitely help ease those money worries and enhance your future employability at the same time.

International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours a week during term time.

The LCA timetable also helps minimise travel costs.

In addition, at LCA your tuition fee covers a free copy of the core text book for each of your modules so there are no expensive compulsory reading lists.

The Student Loan for UK/EU students - Undergraduate CoursesStudents from the UK and elsewhere in the EU are eligible to apply for a loan to cover both the costs of their tuition and their living expenses. These loans only become repayable once you are earning a minimum of £21,000 p.a.

UK and EU students should note that the maximum you will be able to borrow for a course at LCA from Student Finance in any one year in respect of tuition fees is £6,000. Students considering the Supplemented option or either the BSc Business and Hospitality Management or the BSc Business and Healthcare Management will need to be able to pay the additional costs themselves.

Undergraduate Degree Entry Requirements for 2014For entry in 2014, LCA’s standard offer is 260 UCAS tariff points from 3 A levels, eg BCC.

Alternatively, LCA asks for

• Irish Leaving Certificate BBCCC.

• Scottish Highers BBCCC.

• BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma DMM in a business-related subject.

• IBDP 24 points.

Or a recognised international equivalent.

Applicants studying for other qualifications should contact LCA to discuss their circumstances.

We also welcome applications from mature individuals without formal entry qualifications who can demonstrate appropriate, relevant work experience.

All applicants are also required to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at C or above including English and Maths.

Students whose first language is not English and who have not previously studied in the UK are required to have IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 for each sub-test or equivalent.

Our published entry requirements are a guide only and our decision will be based on your overall suitability for the course.

How to ApplyFor September 2014 entry, all applications from UK and EU students should be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). LCA Business School also prefers to receive applications from international students wanting to start in September 2014 and from UK/EU and international candidates interested in starting in January 2015 through UCAS.

When to applyThe normal closing date for the receipt of on-time applications for both Home/EU and International applicants is 15 January 2014.LCA will continue to consider applications made through UCAS after 15 January as long as places remain available.

Candidates are required to have a good UK honours degree or overseas equivalent or a professional qualification.
