Pat rick Edward Connor was born in I re land on March 17, 1820. Hea rr ived penni le ss in New York a t age 16. As an I ri sh immig rant he wassub jected to much rac ia l host il ity. A t age 19 he enl is ted a s a Pr ivatein a Semino le Campa ign to quel l Ind ian upr is ings . He mustered out in1844 and returned to New York . He soon found h imsel f in Texas andinvolved in the Mexican war. He was made a 1 st L ieutenan t, and a tthe expira tion of h is serv ice he jo ined an independent company ofTexas Volun teer s. Promoted to r ank o f Captain on the 12th o f Feb ruary1847 he was l ater d ischarged by h i s own request and he returned toCalifornia.

In the yea r o f 1853 he joined the Ca li fo rn ia Range rs Company whichwas organized to capture the notor ious Mexican bandit Joaquin Murieta .The company consis ted of a l l "crack-shot , fu ll -blooded f ighters"according to h i story. This was l ater p roved by the ir act ions .

Their t rai l ing of the bandi t took the company of volunteers overg round which con ta ined the r ichest o il -f ie ld s in the wor ld . Had anyof them been aware o f thi s, i t wou ld be interes ting to know how longthey would have cont inued t rai ling a lone bandi t before g iving up thechase to d r il l for the b lack gold.

T he h ea d,preserved in a lcohol, was put on exhib it ion and twenty-five centsadmission was charged to " look-see". This show proved so f inancia llysuccess fu l tha t Joaqu in was removed to New York and "booked". After arewarding New York run , the t rave ling show returned to the Ci ty o f SanFranc isco and the head was aga in put on exh ib it ion.
