All our university student services drivers.

Together, we have accomplished our objectives of community engagement. The

precedent of cooperation, unity and determination has set the benchmark for our

beautiful university. Together we have done that. Without the support given, we would

not have come this far. Your input is the testament of our progress thus far.

Despite our achievement, I personally know that there are some things we did not yet

achieve as a team. But I take great delight in charting a new course of engagement in

our community. The baton is now being handed over to our next SRC team of 2018 to

continue the good work that we have started. I believe this is just a small step that the

DWU community has taken but an important one that will continue to play a significant

role in years to come in its future community engagement. What we have started was

just the complementing of the DWU core values of community engagement and social

responsibility to those in our Community and around us. This is just the beginning and

we have many similar programs to implement but time is not at our side. We have to let

go and enter into another stage in life. We have to dream, be innovative and creative in

ways to sustainably create meaningful strategies to serve our university interests and

that of the community. I personally believe that is what God is calling to His people,

telling us of what we should be doing; in expressing and exercising our faith and love to

fellow Christian brothers and sisters.

Congratulations once again team 2017 SRC Community Engagement Committee, 2017

SRC Executives, university staff and the general student body. I wish you a happy, safe

early Merry Christmas, and a Prosperous New Year 2018 and beyond. Please look after

your lives and see you all safe next year. God Bless Us all and continue extending the

helping hands and services to humanity.

Thank you and God bless you all.

SRC Community Engagement Committee Overview

The SRC Community Engagement Committee is one of the Committees of the Divine

Word University Student Representative Council (SRC). It was formerly known as the SRC

Community Service Committee. The primary responsibilities of the committee are to

develop strategies and communicate development efforts to foster working

relationships facilitate, supervise and coordinate planning and implementation of

programs, promote and maintain relationships through working closely with the

university and the outside communities, and engage meaningful approaches to foster

effective cooperation and security amongst the students, staff and the neighboring

communities.

The SRC Community Engagement Committee programs are complementing in small

ways the university goal of Community Engagement and the first key pillar of 2050

Vision. The committees programs are based on the theme: “Taking helpful

responsible approaches to needy ones in our neighborhood”. For almost every past

year, the DWU SRC has not taken into consideration reaching out to its surrounding

needy communities. The programs we have embarked upon and implemented so far

are:

Banana block charitable visitation on Saturday, 13th May 2017 - over 700 clothes

and items presented as a DWU community support and goodwill to foster

effective cooperation and assistance in areas of university’s engagement. The

program was conducted and delivered successfully.

The overall objective or aim/goal of the project was to effectively engage the DWU SRC

Page 10: A BRIEF REPORT OF THE PROPOSED PROGRAMS UNDERTAKEN …

9 | P a g e

The undertaken programs were in line with the DWU core values and its principles of

better community engagement. It was also in line with PNG Vision 2050 underpinned by

the pillar of the Community Development for Integral Human Development.

4. Issue statement of Need Assessment

4.1 Issue the Project aimed to address.

The project aimed at addressing issues of non-cooperation, illiteracy and sick patients’

concerns in the community. Educationally, the lesson highlights the mentality of taking

ownership and responsibility and serving humanity.

4.2 Addressing the Problem

Increased number of student drop out, increased number of youth in the settlement,

increased sick patients in the hospital are some of the issues faced in the Madang

community. These have caused social disorder and weak structure in the community

that will hinder healthy developments and change.

4.3 Addressing the problem to achieve its objective.

The issues addressed here are increased law and order problems by youths and the

health problems which comprised armed robberies, high usage of drugs and

homebrews, and the outbreak of diseases like, HIV AIDs and cancers. The project

achieved its objective through awareness visitations and presentations at various schools

and the hospital by talking to students and patients.

5. Challenges

The lack of or limitations in resources to facilitate community awareness has been a

chronic problem within the DWU SRC Community Engagement Committee to effectively

facilitate community engagement, service, and outreach programs. The activities that

need to be done to implement the project in the future are:

Page 11: A BRIEF REPORT OF THE PROPOSED PROGRAMS UNDERTAKEN …

10 | P a g e

Secure permission from the Headmasters and the Principals, and the hospital

management

Resource preparations to be done in advance

Close contacts with the Deans, HODs , Lecturers and other valuable or resourceful

people

Site observation and analysis prior to visiting

The resources needed to complete the programs are: materials for awareness,

permission from authorities and expenses for printing needs such as letters, banners,

pamphlets, reports, and other matters.

With the stated activities and project inputs like the organization planning to engage the

student body into participating; and the actual execution to achieve the outcomes and

outputs will help make DWU and its surrounding communities a better, healthy and

trouble- free place to live and learn in.

The 2017 budget for projects from February to October is presented below.

BUDGET SUMMARY

NO COST ELEMENT TOTAL ESTIMATED COST

1. Clothes, soaps, toilet tissues and

other items

2,500 plus altogether

2. Moneys collected and used K400.00 for all these programs

9. Recommendation

The need for active community participation through community awareness should be

considered to help the youth especially school students to become productive and

useful members of the community, and to reduce community related health problems.

DWU and the general student body should consider community needs and make them

as their priority areas. From there they should make resources and plans available and

facilitate the projects within the communities to put into practice the university values

and PNG Vision 2050.

Finally, the relevant agencies should increase the allocation of funds to Community

Development and embark on improving avenues to raise illiteracy rates and address

health concerns of its citizens. Adult literacy and training should be conducted to

alleviate poverty to reduce crime rates, employment-income generation activities and

more flexibility in approaches to other communities in and around the university.
