The pursuit of oil in impoverished and war-torn regions like Africa has had a profound impact on theirpopulations. The Occupy Oil movement will at last make a stand, occupying petrol station across London on 4th

February.

plunder.

For instance, in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 1997, 8 million people have lost their lives in a civil war, manipulated by those who would seek to gain the most from this resource rich country.

One third of the members of OPEC (Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries) arecountries in Africa – Nigeria, Libya, Algeria and Angola. Uganda and DR Congo join these countries in payingdearly for the materialism of the West.

Millions have been murdered, raped or displaced as a result of global corporations and the ruling elites – the 1% –chasing oil and minerals in Africa, a continent plagued by civil war, poverty and starvation. It is now on the point ofnear destruction. In the Middle East all out war is imminent. Iran is also precarious.

While the 1% reap the rewards, 2000 people in the UK will die from fuel poverty this year. The old and vulnerablewill be found dead in their beds, having been forced to make the choice between heat and food.

The plight of the global economy has also contributed to the Occupy Oil movements’ callto arms. Food prices continue to rise due to the ever increasing price of crude oil. Workers have to cope withnominal pay increases and high inflation. And many people who are unfit and unable to go to work will be forcedoff benefits and into unpaid and low paid work for the benefit of tax-dodging companies and supermarket chains.

Meanwhile, bankers continue to receive disproportionate bonuses of up to £3bn for managing hedge funds, andreceive peerages and accolades from Politicians.

The movement are calling on activists to organise themselves into affinity groups and joinin the action in the name of change. They will make banners, get sound systems and pick targets.

Actions designed for maximum impact will be co-ordinated as the date nears. Occupy Oil aim to send an openingshot in their war against the global elites. You can too, across London, on February 9, 12-3pm.
