2 RACKSPACE CASE STUDY: COMMVAULT

Commvault’s data protection and information management solutions help companies better protect, access and activate data — as a more powerful strategic asset.

The company was formed in 1988 as a development group within Bell Labs, and later designated as a strategic business unit of AT&T Network Systems. Commvault was later incorporated in 1996 as an independent company based in Tinton Falls, New Jersey.

In the two decades since, Commvault has experienced tremendous growth, pioneered numerous industry-shaping innovations and established itself as a respected data and information management leader.

Publicly traded on NASDAQ (CVLT), Commvault today employs more than 2,300 highly skilled individuals across markets worldwide. Commvault solutions comprise one of the industry’s leading portfolios in data protection and recovery, cloud, virtualization, archive, file sync and share.

“Commvault is a data-management company, focused on helping organizations activate their data and also reduce the cost of managing that data and turning that data into usable assets,” said Todd Sommers, Area Vice President, Commvault.

DERIVING MORE FROM DATA

The company’s sole focus on data management has led to adoption by companies of all sizes, in a range of industries including financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, utilities and government, and for solutions deployed on premise, across mobile platforms, to and from the cloud, and provided as-a-service.

“With widespread adoption of cloud, many of our 22,500 customers today are looking to leverage the cloud, especially around data management,” said Sommers. “Organizations are moving so fast that they need help to see what they have now in terms of data potential, as well as uncovering trends and preparing in the future.”

“WITH THE BENEFIT OF ADDING RACKSPACE

KNOWLEDGE OF A WIDE BREADTH OF

TECHNOLOGIES, COMMVAULT GETS BETTER AT

WHAT WE DO, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME HELPING

OTHERS MANAGE AND MIGRATE TO THE CLOUD.”

TODD SOMMERS :: Area Vice President Commvault

3 RACKSPACE CASE STUDY: COMMVAULT

While a major Commvault business objective is to allow customers to manage and protect their data (no matter where it is stored), in its self-determined role as a “next-generation data-management platform,” the company also strives to help customers increase the value of existing datasets and derive deeper insights from data.

“With data management exponentially growing, how do you unlock value and provide retention and policy around that data management?” said Andrew Stone, Global Account Manager, Commvault — who confirms most of the Commvault customer base is looking at more than just one cloud to apply to their core business.

“What we’re finding is most of our customer base is actually looking beyond just a single cloud to apply to their core business,” said Stone. “Depending on the use case, there might be an opportunity to leverage different platforms to match that specific workload. By partnering with Rackspace, we are focused on bridging the gap for our customers.”

GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE

The story of Rackspace and Commvault’s initial meeting, and what led the companies more recently becoming partners, is a noteworthy one.

In 2006, Rackspace needed infrastructure and functionality that could continue to manage its explosive growth. When backup operations were beginning to take longer than expected with a legacy system that was attempting backup jobs at the same time, rather than queue, Commvault delivered brought Rackspace an improved data protection solution that accommodated integration with all leading storage platforms.

“What initially drove us together was Rackspace’s need to have a quality solution that would protect data and make data available,” said Sommers. “When I think about the Rackspace tagline of Fanatical Support®, it’s about fulfilling the needs an organization has regarding attaining understanding of a wide breadth of technologies.”

As the only provider today who can serve all of a customer’s workloads on all of the leading clouds, Rackspace possesses the unique ability to serve the growing number of mid-market and enterprise customers who are using a multi-cloud strategy, to ensure that all elements of their IT work smoothly together. They want to buy a valuable IT outcome.

“The ability to really identify what’s vital to your organization and being able to turn that into usable data, or analytics to some extent, is really where the industry’s going,” said Sommers. “That’s where Commvault — partnered with Rackspace, which is uniquely positioned for cloud-based data-management — can start to deliver value in its services.”

“OUR CUSTOMER BASE IS NOT LOOKING AT A

ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL WHEN IT COMES TO CLOUD.

PARTNERING WITH RACKSPACE, WE CAN PROVIDE

A LOT OF VALUE AND SUPPORT AROUND MULTI-

CLOUD ENVIRONMENTS.”

ANDREW STONE :: Global Account Manager, Commvault

4 RACKSPACE CASE STUDY: COMMVAULT

Stone concurs. “The great thing about working with Rackspace is their transparency, also a key differentiator for us that is driving innovation and development within our product set,” said Stone. “Rackspace typically uncovers things a lot faster than a traditional, enterprise-based customer can. This gives us the advantage of staying ahead of the market, meaning we can develop specifically to increase the value to our product.”

SYNERGY FOR THE NEXT DECADE

With most enterprise customers moving to a cloud solution set, Rackspace is meeting the need for a trusted third party that can manage and fully support multi-cloud — across hybrid, public, and private cloud.

“These are customers who also need a solution like Commvault that can work across all those environments,” said Sommers. “With broad Rackspace expertise and our knowledge of data, the Commvault-Rackspace partnership provides tremendous value that reduces cost, increases agility, and drives a lot of value to the customer.”

As Rackspace experiences rapid growth in multi-cloud, it is uniquely addressing market need as customers of organizations like Commvault look for a platform solution that not only provides scale, but also offers hardware and infrastructure choice.

“I think the future of the Commvault-Rackspace relationship, is tremendous. I see opportunities for us to jointly develop new services, new offerings, and more revenue,” said Sommers.
