Never the Last Post - Belgian Embassy project Last Friday, Mr Hewitt and I escorted a group of Year 9 students to the Belgian Embassy in Canberra where they presented personalised wooden crosses to the Belgian Ambassador. These crosses are to commemorate the approximately 100 soldiers who died in Belgium after the war had ended whilst awaiting repatriation to Australia; the project was undertaken with three other regional schools. The crosses are now onboard a plane headed for Belgium and will be laid on the graves of these Australian soldiers as part of this years Remembrance Day commemoration. Mr Hewitt and I were very proud of our students for their efforts and outstanding representation of our school. After the embassy visit, we took part in a guided tour of the War Memorial and had the opportunity to lay a wreath as part of the daily Last Post ceremony. Well done Nathan, Bowen, Imogen, Mikayla, Breanna, Sophie and Brock for their work on such an important project. Family of champions Congratulations to Bowen and Bethany Murray for their performance in the National Karate Championships held in Canberra last weekend. Deputy’s ReportYear 7 - 10 ExamsYearly examinations are happening in week four and week five. All students have received a timetable and information from their teachers regarding the content of the exams. Students in Year 9 and Year 10 will complete their exams in an examination room with all their year group. Students in Year 7 and Year 8 will complete exams in their classrooms. If students do not have an exam timetable they can get one from their Year Advisor or the School Office.

It is important students revise the content that will be in the exams. In PROSPER over the last two weeks we have been focusing on study skills. Students have taken their study skills booklets home to help them prepare for the exams. We discussed the importance of having a good home study environment - a desk which has good lighting and a place to store their school books. As a class we developed a study timetable and students identified the topics they needed to focus on. Students practised the skills of summarising their notes to help them revise. It is important to get a good sleep the night before an exam and have a good breakfast. Students need to check they have all the equipment required for the exam.

If a student is absent for an exam please phone the office and let the school know. Students who are absent need to complete an Illness and Misadventure form which they can obtain from the Deputy Principal’s Office. This needs to be completed by the student and signed by a parent. A letter from the parent must be attached to explain the absence for students in Years 7, 8 and 9. Students in Year 10 are required to attach a Medical Certificate or other relevant documentation. This is a requirement of NESA. The Illness and Misadventure form must be submitted to the relevant Head Teacher or Deputy Principal within 3 days of returning to school.

Year 12 2020Year 11 2019 Yearly Reports were posted home last week. With the reports was a letter inviting parents to an interview in week four on Thursday or Friday. We encourage all parents to attend this interview so you can build an understanding of your childs pattern of study for the HSC including requirements for major projects and performances. If the time you were allocated is not suitable please contact the school office on 4832 1421 to make an alternate time. Interviews can be conducted from 8:00am to 4:30pm. Once interviews are completed and all documentation is returned, students will not be required to attend classes in the subject they have dropped. Students will be receiving their HSC Assessment Booklet in week four.

Faculty UpdateArt News

Our thoughts and well wishes are with Year 12 who are currently doing their HSC examinations. The visual arts exam is the last one so Art students will have lots of time to revise their Case Studies and practise past HSC papers. Ms Jeffcoat is expecting to receive practiseessays to correct and give feedback on.

Year 11 students are starting to think about what they will be making for their Body of Work for Year 12. Visitinggalleries and exhibitions will help give them ideas and broaden their experience of contemporary art.

Spring has arrived and our Year 7 artists have beendrawing and painting watercolours “en plein air” (outdoors) under the blossom tree and in the Aboriginal Garden. They have been inspired by nature and have produced some beautiful work. For homework Year 7’s need tophotograph their favourite place and bring five of the best images to school on a USB or email them to themselves.

Ms Bollen, who teaches Year 7 French, is organising an excursion for them on 2 December to visit the National Gallery of Australia followed by a multicultural lunch at the Burns Club. Ms Jeffcoat will be accompanying the group to the Gallery where students will be looking out for French artists who also painted “en plein air”.

Year 8 art students have been learning new skills in drawing full figure self portraits in the style of Japanese Manga. These drawings are being scanned into the computer and students are learning how to colour and digitally manipulate them in Photoshop.

Any budding artists out there should enjoy the warmer weather and head outside to sketch and paint our beautiful landscape and gardens. Don’t miss the “Spring Fling” Crookwell Art Show at the Crookwell Art Gallery on 8, 9 and 10 November opening at 5:30pm on Friday 8November. Crookwell High School students will be displaying their spring paintings in the foyer. We hope to see you there.

Faculty UpdateMathematics

Whats happening in Mathematics?Students in Years 7 - 10 are busily preparing for their Yearly examinations. All students should have received their exam notifications. Although students will not be allowed to bring summaries into the exam, they are reminded that writing the summaries is a form of study and will assist students in consolidating their learning of different topics. Students are also strongly encouraged to complete practise questions across all topics studied this year in the lead up to their exam. Students are required to bring their own equipment to their Mathematics exam, including a calculator, ruler, pens and pencil.

Year 11 students have begun their HSC studies this term. We are pleased to be able to offer a wide variety of HSC Mathematics courses in 2020, catering for the range of abilities of students in the year group. We are offeringMathematics Standard 1 and 2, Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 and we have one student completing the Mathematics Extension 2 course via Aurora College. Year 11 students will have their first HSC assessment task coming up later in Term 4.

Students who have questions about their examination/assessment preparation should approach their classroom teacher for guidance.

Junior Boys CricketOn Wednesday 30 October, Crookwell High School competed in a Gala Day for the U15’s Hasset Cup Cricket. The day involved Crookwell High School, Goulburn High School and Mulwaree High School. Goulburn and Mulwaree High Schools played first and Crookwell High played the winner of this game. Crookwell High School won the toss and decided to bat and set a score of just 37. Mulwaree were confident they would win however, at 1 for 3 Crookwell was in with a chance.Mulwaree ended up getting the runs with overs to spare. I would like to congratulate the boys on their behaviour.
