We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects
to Elders past, present and future
In the Classroom National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Stage 3 have been doing exactly that over the past week.
National Reconciliation Week runs from 27th May to 3rd June every year. Stage 3 learnt that these dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. After learning about these important historical markers Stage 3 listened to some traditional Aboriginal music, created a beat with some clapping sticks and had a go at some Aboriginal dance. Stage 3 also had the opportunity of listening to a modern Aboriginal performer.
Stage 3 were able to make connections to their novel study, A Waltz For Matilda, by Jackie French. This historical fiction novel is set from 1894-1915, and contains themes of discrimination towards migrants and the Indigenous Australians. Stage 3 were able to develop a link between the treatment of these communities in the early settlement of Australia and the respect that these cultures deserve.
Harry Bailey enjoyed moving to the beat.
Charles Butler, Jay Knight, Charlie Colley and Ben Lang kept
the beat.
Sianabel Anderson, Emma Robertson, Tahlia Gourlay and
Tyler Smith posed like an eagle.
Home and Emergency Contact Details The colder weather has now set in and the chance of having to evacuate the school due to heavy snow or extreme weather increases. It is important that we have current contact details in case of an emergency. If you have recently changed your mobile phone number, changed address or any other emergency contact details please contact the office and have these details updated as soon as possible.
Charlotte’s Web The students in 1/2 Kangaroo have been reading the wonderful story of ‘Charlotte’s Web’, by E.B. White. We have been captivated by the characters Charlotte, Wilbur, Fern, Templeton and their stories. Students have completed a number of literacy and creative art activities over the last two weeks related to this beautiful story. To conclude our venture into this story we will be watching the film ‘Charlotte’s Web’ in class. The film is rated ‘G’.
If you would not like your child to view this film, please
contact the school on 4832 1213 before the 12th June 2020. Thank you, Mrs Whittington.
Pyjama Day On Friday 12th June we are having a fun day to demonstrate our appreciation of the exceptional work done by the doctors, nurses and staff of Crookwell District Hospital. Despite these challenging and uncertain times, these selfless people kept the doors of the hospital open to quietly provide quality and professional care, to those of the Upper Lachlan Shire.
How will we demonstrate our appreciation? With a celebration of life of course! We are going to have fun! We are going to wear our pyjamas to school, with the shoes we normally wear, and make a coin donation for the privilege. With the money we collect we are going to surprise the amazing people who work at Crookwell District Hospital with a little gift to say ‘Thank You! We Appreciate All You Do’ from the students and staff of Crookwell Public School.
Stage 1 News Topics This term, students in Stage 1 will continue to share news with their class once a week. Students will speak on a variety of news topics to share their knowledge and understanding on key learning areas covered at school as well as sharing things of personal interest. We ask that you encourage your child to regularly participate, as it benefits their speaking and listening skills. Please see the table below for your child’s news day. Thank you for your support!

School readiness conversation We are asking any parents of students commencing school in 2021 to join our school Principal Michael Whittington and next year’s Kindergarten teacher, Kirstie O’Neill in the school residence for a morning or afternoon tea. We will have a conversation about how best to prepare your child for school.
Please call the school on 48 321 213 to arrange a time to meet during Week 9, Monday 22nd June until Friday 26th June. Social distancing measures will be in place and we will have a limit on how many parents are able to attend at any given time so book early to get your desired time and day.
Enrolling now for 2021! We are hopeful of starting ‘Flying Start’ sessions in Term 3 but will have to wait for departmental advice before going ahead with this plan. In the interim, please feel free to phone the school if you have any questions regarding the orientation program or your child starting school in 2021.
Miss O’Neill is very happy to discuss the program and all the benefits it offers to both parents and students.
Why read 20 minutes at home each day? If a student is read to and then starts reading themselves from Kindergarten they would have read the equivalent of 60 school days by the time they complete Year 6. Want to be a better reader? Simply read!
2020 Semester 1 Reports – An Explanation Dear Parents/Carers,
At the end of term, Semester 1 student reports will be completed and provided to parents. This report has been adjusted due to the impact of COVID-19. Considering the many adjustments made by students, parents and schools, this report will not grade student achievement using the A-E scale.
The teacher comment will describe your child’s progress and achievement in the learning covered during Term 1 and Term 2 and identify what can be done to support their learning growth. The report will focus on the learning undertaken in English and mathematics and provide information about other learning addressed by your child.
Please be aware that all students may not have covered the same syllabus outcomes or content during this period.
We are aiming to host face-to-face Parent/Teacher Interviews in Week 10 with social distancing measures in place but this will depend on health advice and procedures put in place by the NSW Department of Education.
Peer Support Session 1: Walk into any classroom last Friday and you
would have been met with the same sight, Year 6 students, ably assisted in some rooms by Year 5 students who had been asked to ‘step up’ and assume the role of Peer Support leader, running the very first Peer Support session of the year. It seems like ages ago that Year 6 completed Peer Support training. They were ready to run the program when COVID -19 spoilt the plans. Last Friday was the first opportunity for leaders to put their skills to the test; a test they passed with flying colours.
The first session comprised ‘Get to Know You’ activities, encouraging students across the school to feel safe and confident expressing their opinions in an unfamiliar situation. Peer Support will run for 10 weeks and if last Friday was anything to go by, it will run very smoothly.
You did an excellent job Year 6 and a big thankyou to the Year 5 helpers and in particular Erik Skelly, who has stepped up to the role of Peer Support leader for the duration of the program.
Oliver Keith, Bodi Waters, Liam Moloney, Naomi Cramp, Ava Wilcox-Symons and Lily Briggs enjoying the first Peer
Support session with their leaders, Erik Skelly and Maddy Wray.

in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Region and are an initiative of International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) of the University of N.S.W.
The Science Competition will be held first, in the week beginning Monday, 17th August, 2020. The competitions provide an opportunity for all students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation. It provides schools and teachers with comprehensive reporting of results and also gives parents helpful information regarding their child’s performance.
All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly, as well as the average mark for the state. The student report is also useful for highlighting student strengths and weaknesses in the skills and processes of the competition subject area.
The entry fee is $15.95 per student, per competition, to participate.
If you would like your child/ren to participate in one or all of the competitions please complete the attached note and return it to school by Friday 3rd July, 2020.
