Welcome to 2020! It was great to see everyone return safely to school after the summer holidays. I hope you had an enjoyable break and are rested and well-prepared for the new school year. To all the newly enrolled students and their families I warmly welcome you into our school community. I also extend a very warm welcome to Mrs Atfield and Mr Roberts who join our staff again. I feel certain you will all find your association with the school both enjoyable and rewarding.

I encourage all families to contact the school immediately if they have any concerns or matters that need to be discussed or clarified. These open channels of communication help to foster strong links and develop deep understanding between a student’s home and their school and is an important factor contributing to educational success.

Tea and Tissues! How exciting! Kindergarten students will be starting school on Monday 3rd February. To ensure a settled morning for all, we invite Kindergarten parents and carers to ‘Tea and Tissues’ in the school staffroom.

After delivering your child to the Kindergarten classroom, please join Mr Whittington for tea and coffee and meet the parents of your child’s future friends.

We look forward to a fantastic 2020!

Mr Whittington, Miss O’Neill and Miss Stephenson

Best Start This week our 2020 Kindergarten students have been enjoying some special one-on-one time with their new teachers Miss O’Neill and Miss Stephenson. During this time they have been completing their Best Start Assessments. Best Start is used to assess what knowledge and experiences children are bringing to their first year of school.

The teachers will use this knowledge to create quality learning programs that cater for the individual needs of our students.

Miss O’Neill, Miss Stephenson and Crookwell Public School are excited to welcome our Kindergarten children who start full-time from Monday 3rd February.

Genevieve Webster completing her Best Start Assessment with the lovely Kindergarten teacher, Miss Sophie

No Hat …… Play In The Shade Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world with 140,000 new cases and 1,000 deaths recorded annually. The increasing occurrence of skin cancer in Australia is a matter of concern with skin cancers accounting for 80% of all new cancers diagnosed each year.

The A.C.T. and surrounding region has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in Australia. The major cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet radiation over many years, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Even if exposure does not cause obvious sunburn, damage still occurs and accumulates over the years.

To help protect students from over exposure to the sun during Term 1, the school’s policy of ‘No Hat…Play in the Shade,’ will be strictly enforced.

Please encourage your child to wear their school hat at school to help keep them sun safe.

N.B. Adjustable microfibre school hats are available from the uniform shop at a cost of $15.00.

Chicken News Mr Howard and Chris Tetley have worked tirelessly over the school holidays getting our ‘Chicken Mansion’ prepared for the arrival of the school hens. The final touches will be made over the next few weeks to help ensure we have safe and happy hens. The four hens joining our school were hatched in Term 4, 2019 by Stage 2 students.

Before they settle in to their home they will require names. Our newly elected Environmental Committee will be conducting a Naming Competition. Entry fee is 50 cents per suggestion. Committee members will be set up under the oak trees during recess time for all of Week 2 (except swimming carnival day). The top 10 guesses will be voted on by the school community via Facebook poll. All money raised through this competition will go towards purchasing feed for our chickens.

John Howard: What a legend!

To Keep Track of Your Child’s Belongings You can: use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats

and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels

go through your child’s bag with them each night

check that labels haven’t faded with washing

enquire at the office when something is misplaced and they will direct you to the school’s lost property area.

The school newsletter called, ‘News & Views’ is the primary method the school communicates with its families. The newsletter can be accessed through the Crookwell Public School webpage (www.crookwell-p.schools.nsw.edu.au ) or you can receive a hard copy of the newsletter which is sent home with the youngest child of the family attending school on the last day of each school week.

Many families have the newsletter emailed rather than receive a hard copy. This method of communication is preferred by the school as it is more economical in terms of time and resources, and is a more reliable method to convey information about school happenings to school families.

If you would prefer to have the newsletter emailed please return the slip below so we can add you to our list. Otherwise please check your child’s bag on the last day of each school week in order to keep up-to-date with school happenings.

2020 VOLUNTARY SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION

What is A Voluntary School Contribution?

The vast majority of public schools request a contribution from parents each year to supplement existing funding. These contributions allow schools to provide additional resources and learning programs for our students.

What Will The Money Be Used For?

The money will be used to purchase resources to support teaching/learning programs for each student across the school.

How Much? The suggested contribution is $50 per child. Please note that this roughly equates to $1 per child per week.

I cannot stress enough the difference to our school finances that your contribution will make. The contribution fees are within the guidelines set by the Department of Education.

How To Pay

Please place your contribution, with the slip below, in an envelope and return it to the school office as soon as you are able. If you prefer, you may choose to pay a contribution in instalments. A receipt will be issued for all monies received.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our school.

Growing Together, Working Together

N.S.W. Department of Education School Swimming Scheme

Dear Parents/Caregivers, The N.S.W. Department of Education School Swimming Scheme is an intensive learn to swim program, which develops water confidence and provides students with basic skills in water safety and survival. The scheme is conducted over 10 days. Each daily session is 45 minutes. Students who have not reached a satisfactory standard of water safety and survival skills, and are unable to swim 35 metres confidently, unaided in deep water, are eligible to participate in the School Swimming Scheme. The scheme focuses on students in Years 2 and 3, with a couple of students from Year 4 also invited to participate.

Instruction will take place at the Crookwell Pool. The scheme will continue daily from 17th February, 2020 to 28th February, 2020. Students will walk to and from the pool with their class teacher. Pool entry will be by season ticket or at a cost of $1.00 per day. The total cost of pool entry for the 10 day scheme is $10.00. Each child should bring a swimming costume, a towel, a blouse or shirt, a hat and warm clothing to wear on a cool day. As instruction will take place in an outdoor pool, it is recommended that students use adequate sun protection, eg. An SPF 30+ broad spectrum, water resistant sun screen reapplied regularly. A T-shirt or rash shirt is also recommended (pool facility permitting). Students will be assessed during the School Swimming Scheme for all water safety skills without wearing goggles. If you would like your child to participate in the scheme, please complete and sign the form below and return it to your child’s class teacher. Regards, Michael Whittington Principal
