‘Flying Start’ Our first Flying Start session for 2019 commenced on Monday morning. An eager group of preschool aged students arrived at the Kindergarten classroom very excited and happy to see their friends and other peers they may not have met before. Developmental play activities were set up around the classroom for students to use while enhancing their social skills and forming many friendships. Ms Caffery, Miss O’Neill and Mrs Gay joined the enthusiastic learners for the morning, getting to know everyone and meeting new families. We look forward to seeing you all again next Monday morning from 9.30am-11.00am.

Kelsey Ann is accompanied by her big brother Alvin in the

Kindergarten classroom.

Xander enjoying himself while exploring all activities in the

room.

Leo Campbell is so excited to be at big school!

Koa Haynes and Ivy Stanger are engrossed in a

conversation on the phone.

Cristian, Carter and Henry really enjoyed the fishing game.

get across the wobbly steps.

Mothers’ Day Stall Our students came ready to purchase some lovely gifts for their mum or special lady in their life today. The gifts were lovingly gift wrapped by some amazing mums ready to be purchased at the stall this morning. To all the amazing mums and special women in our students’ lives, have a wonderful day on Sunday!

Mrs Hewitt helps Jackson Reeves with his special purchase

at the Mothers’ Day stall.

Kindergarten students Connor, Aria, Laura, Isabelle and Sam

were very excited with their purchases.

Levi and Oliver were very happy with their beautifully

wrapped gifts for their mums.

Thank you to our amazing mums who helped at the stall this morning, Jackie, Heather, Kristy, Alex, Tammie and little Isla.

Happy Mothers’ Day! Students in Stage 3 have been busy preparing some special

gifts for the amazing women in their lives this week. With

gardening in mind, they have carefully created and planted

some items that will brighten up any garden as the cold,

wintery weather approaches! We really hope you treasure

these gifts and have a wonderful Mothers’ Day!

Lillie Bryan and Skyelah Gray had a great time painting

garden pottery.

Charles Butler and Tyler Smith perfect the painting of their

garden ducks for their mums.

Life doesn’t come with a manual,

it comes with a mother!

Claire Collins’ duck looks like it could be a real-life version!

Charlotte, Abigail, Sophie and Maddy display the beautiful

flower tiles they painted for Mothers’ Day.

Earn & Learn Returns commences Woolworths are running Earn & Learn again this year between 1 May and 25 June. If you spend money at Woolworths during this period don’t forget to collect the stickers. A sticker sheet will be sent home with students for you to fill up and return to the school. The more stickers we get, the more equipment we can buy.

STEM Hook Day On Wednesday Stage 3 students ventured to Crookwell High to take part in the STEM Hook Day with our community of schools. It was a sensational day where students got to work with Year 8 mentors to learn about STEM and extend their knowledge and skills in this area. There were some great challenges posed to the students throughout the day including:

- Design and build a swing 15cm tall out of recycled materials that can hold a boiled egg.

- Design and build a vehicle that can travel two metres and is powered by a balloon.

- What types of electrical items do you use? Design a new invention you would love to have in your home?

Students thoroughly enjoyed working with their peers from all schools and getting a better understanding of renewable energy and the industry partners that are in close proximity to Crookwell.

Issy, Emma and Flo design and build a fine looking swing –

and yes it does hold a boiled egg!

Cody, Cameron and Shaymus work together to commence

the construction of their vehicle.

Eve and Lillian are assisted by their Year 8 mentor, Tilly,

when testing their vehicle along the rainbow strip.

Maddy and Abigail prepare to launch their vehicle and see if

their engineering design process is a success!

Past pupil, Sean Ward, is the mentor assisting Mackenzie

Gauci and Luke Palmer with their STEM project.

Thank you Mrs White! For the last four weeks 3/4 Koala has been very lucky to have the assistance of Mrs Dana White in the classroom as a practicum teacher. The students have enjoyed learning through her exciting and well prepared lessons and achieved much from this experience as has Mrs White! We would like to thank Mrs White for her dedication, enthusiasm and wisdom to our class and wish her well with the remainder of her teaching degree. We can’t wait to have you back here teaching again! 3/4 Koala

Phoebe and Katelyn enjoyed having Mrs White in the 3/4

class.

No Waste Wednesday Students in Stage 2 have been trialling ‘NO WASTE WEDNESDAY’. Students reduce or exclude any plastic and non-recyclable waste from their lunch boxes. They have been assisting in the packing of their food in the aim to lower the class’s rubbish output. Students are very proud of their efforts and are eager to share their success. They are hoping to encourage the rest of the school to adapt this terrific initiative.

Joe Stephenson and Ada Dunn proudly share their ‘Waste

Free’ lunches.

Stage 2’s Journey around Australia Did you know that Australia has over 150 “Big” things around the country? Stage 2 has been exploring several of them as they travel around Australia, learning about our plentiful country. Students have shared their own knowledge and experiences from travels and discussed many important issues that face our country in today’s climate. From mountain ranges, animal populations, cropping, bushrangers to industries the students are thoroughly enjoying learning about our country within literacy, numeracy, science and history and geography lessons. The students are currently in South Australia at the ‘Big Lobster’ learning about this amazing fishing town. I wonder where they will be off to next?

Michael and Erik learn about all the big things in Australia.

Worms! Our students continue to enjoy, learn and work hard in our school garden. We currently have some new members working hard and Alec has been busy making sure they are surviving in their new home. Feeding scraps that we collect from the classrooms to the worms has allowed them to grow nice and fat! Alec discovered this week we actually have baby worms in our garden! Our school veggie garden will definitely enjoy these new additions to keep the soil in great condition.

One of our worms that is thriving in our garden.

Alec carefully holds some of the worms he found in our vegie

patch this week.

Did you know? Worms help to increase the

amount of air and water that gets into the soil.

They break down organic matter, like leaves

and grass into things that plants can use.

When they eat, they leave behind castings that

are a very valuable type of fertilizer.

Peer Support 2019 Last Friday, Year 6 peer leaders ran their first Peer Support session beginning this year’s module, Moving Forward which focuses on building resilience. The session featured getting to know you activities, the development of a group agreement, and discussions based around finding a way to view situations in a positive light. Year 6 leaders did an amazing job as mentors and are very much looking forward to spending more time with the students in their groups.

Glynn, Tyler, Alvin and Jack enjoy getting to know their peer

leader, Myles.

Claire Collins leads her Peer Support group with assistance

from Sam Dooley in Year 5.

Annie and Ronan’s group demonstrate that Peer Support is an excellent opportunity to work with students from different

years.

Mackenzie and Shane’s Peer Support group really enjoyed

their first session.

Next week in Peer Support… Next week in Peer Support children will have an opportunity to discuss their personal qualities and strengths. The children will identify their qualities and acknowledge how they contribute to their achievements. Through activities children recognise they used their strengths to achieve success and can be encouraged to approach future activities optimistically. Ask your child to describe their own qualities and strengths so you can recognise and acknowledge these.

Cross Country Champions At last week’s assembly the 2019 cross country age champions were presented with their medallions. These students placed first within their respective age groups. The 2019 cross country age champions are: Sophie Ward, Erik Skelly, Skye Garnham, Phoebe Murray, Lillian Skelly, Sonny Woods and Myles Kearney. Good luck to all the students who are attending the district cross country today in Goulburn!

NAPLAN Testing The annual National Assessment Program testing for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 takes place from 14-16 May. Students are tested nationally in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The following tips may assist students to achieve their personal best as they participate in the National Assessment Program next week:-

Drink plenty of water prior to the test.

Get at least 8 hours sleep the nights before the test.

Stay calm.

Listen to instructions and where necessary ask for clarification.

Read precisely and think carefully.

Pace yourself i.e. use your time wisely.

Check your work if time allows.

Eat a healthy breakfast.

You can do nothing more than your best and we know you will each do that.

Best of luck to Year 3 and Year 5 from everybody at Crookwell Public School.

Gymnastics Students continued to work on their gymnastics skills this week in the build up to working on larger pieces of equipment later in the term. The highlight for Stage 2 students was learning the importance of a strong ‘tuck’ position when instructor Vaughn lifted them into the air.

Johnny Wilson and Dustin Carr demonstrate their balancing

skills on the safety of a floor based beam.

Alyssa Huang performs a hand stand, with some support

from Vaughn.

Bodi Waters, Rory Hallam, Alex Anderson, Anthony Barber, George Willis and School Chaplin, Mr McAuley, wait for their

turn.

Ben can’t believe he is up so high!

Kade Fowler is feeling a little dizzy after ‘taking a spin’ with

Vaughn.

2019 Legends of League: Gilbert/Croker Cup Crookwell Public School entered three teams into the 2019 Gilbert/Croker Cup and one team in the league tag held at North Park in Goulburn. It was a beautiful day and our young footballers entered the field ready to give their very best effort. All players ran and tackled their hearts out all day and left the field each time knowing they had given their all. It was great to see some new players give rugby league and league tag a go and they were well supported by their team mates. Aaron Peat, the organiser of the event from the Canberra Raiders, was elated that we entered so many teams on the day.

All teams had mixed results with a couple of wins, a few draws and a couple of losses but everyone left with a smile on their face.

Thank you to our wonderful coaches Rob Cole, Geoff Knight, Andy Knight, Liddy Skelly, Kayla Gann and Megan McGregor. Thank you also to our fantastic supporters, mums, dads, grandparents, aunties and uncles who cheered and supported the teams throughout the day. Congratulations all players!

the game.

Kindergarten News Topics News in Kindergarten will commence more formally this term with a roster and topic for each week. The aim of news is to foster speaking and listening skills. It is an activity that can be socially rewarding and academically advantageous for young children while also solidifying the home-school connection. See the table below for the day your child has news. If your child is unable to bring something in to share, they are more than welcome just to speak about the topic. Please do not bring items of great sentimental or monetary value.

Reconciliation Week 2019 @ Crookwell Public 27th May – 3rd June The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2019 is ‘Grounded in Truth, Walk Together with Courage’ In 2019, we reflect on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey – 52 years since the 1967 referendum, and 27 years since the historic Mabo decision. To commemorate these significant milestones our school will partake in activities that bring everyone together to celebrate Australia’s Indigenous culture.

Events Monday 27th May – Wadjiny with Troy Allen

Visiting Performer for K-6, 9:30am (Multipurpose Hall, cost: $5.00) Troy uses song, music and didgeridoo, dance, artefacts, examples of ancient rock and cave paintings and fire making demonstrations to tell the stories of his people. This interactive cultural awareness programme is delivered in a fun and educational learning environment where Troy quickly builds rapport with students. He tailors the content to the age of his audience and all programmes are designed to be thought provoking and to encourage discussion of his rich and diverse culture.

Student Reconciliation messages K-6, Weeks 3-4 (Classrooms) Students decorate handprints with a significant artwork or message to create a whole-school artwork which will be displayed in our school for the Reconciliation assembly in Week 5.

Friday 31st May – Smoking Ceremony (Bottom Oval) & Yarns with Ray Stage 3 Reconciliation Assembly

Ray, from Timbery’s Consultancy, visits CPS. We commence the day with a smoking ceremony on the bottom ovals for all students, staff and our community. Ray visits each classroom throughout the day to have a ‘yarn’ and share family artefacts and his culture. Stage 3’s Assembly Item invites you to Walk Together with Courage through a timeline of Reconciliation History in Australia. We also perform ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’ as a musical, dramatic & poetry piece.

Visiting Performer – Troy Allen Reconciliation Week On Monday 27
