    Using this Booklet

    Why a prayer book?

e idea of using a prayer book seems strange to manyChristians today. For some, experience has shown that it canquickly become mindless repetition, devoid of spiritual life.Others have never used written prayers but fear they will bestifling or get in the way of real, authentic intimacy with God.

Many of us have never even considered it.

What is all the more interesting is that this situation is entirelynew. (When looking at the long history of the church, anythingin the last 300 or so years is new.) rough the life of thechurch, written prayers have always played a central part ofworshipping Godin fact, this traces back to well before Jesus.

For thousands of years, the Jews recited written prayers, including the Shema: Hear, O Israel! e Lord your God, theLord is one! And you shall love the Lord your God with allyour heart, soul, mind and strength... Each day began withthese words, without fail.e early church continued thistradition and expanded it, incorporating hymns and prayers inworship of Jesus, the Messiah.

I believe the question we need to ask is not, what is wrongwithusing a prayer bookbut rather, what is right about it that itpersisted for so many centuries?

Each era has its own particular strengths and weaknesses. Astrength we enjoy today is our commitment to a real, authentic

relationship with Jesus. Praise the Lord that this is so! We areno longer content to merely echo theology and doctrinebecause our parents believed. We want to know God ourselves.

    3

    6/35

And so we want to speak to Him out of our own hearts, ratherthan through a formal prayer book.is is good!

I believe that strength has also very often blinded us to acorresponding weaknessin our desire for authenticity, we areoften a slave to our whims. If we do notfeel like praising God,we do not have the resources to fix our attention on Him andworship anyway. We may even feel that it would be wrongto doso. But this means that, very often, we do not have to tools tofight to see God when our vision is hazy. Whether we feel like it

or not, God is deserving of our delight. Are we able to sit stillandfocus on Him for long enough to enjoy Him?

e answer to this question will largely depend on the tools wehave available, and how consistently we put them to use. Wehave the Word, which holds God up to be seen and praised;and we have His Spirit, who makes that Word come alive. But

do we have a consistent way of applying ourselves to askforhelp in seeing, and then looking?

is is the point of any prayer book. It is not my assumptionthat a prayer is better because someone wrote it in loftyvocabulary. But I do assume that saying a prayer someone elsewrote is better than no prayer at all. And I also assume that, on

the day I do not feel like praying, and do not have the words, Iwill only do it if I am in the habit.

    About this prayer book

is particular prayer book is an adaptation of the Book ofCommon Prayer. It has been stripped of any exclusivelyAnglican language (of which there was little to begin with), andit has also been modified to work better for an individualsaying these prayers alone, or for families.

which will encourage and strengthen you today. Perhaps lingerwith one for a week, and then select another.

My own prayer is that this booklet will be a toolone thathelps you turn your vision to God and rejoice in Him. As youpray, may you behold the glory of God in the face of JesusChrist, and so be transformed! (2 Cor. 3:18)

To God alone be the Glory!

    Morning Prayer

Invitatorye prayers begin by inviting Gods presence and meditating onHis power and goodness.

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare yourpraise.

Read one of the following psalms and its response:

    Psalm Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;

let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God,and a great King above all gods.In his hand are the depths of the earth;the heights of the mountains are his also.e sea is his, for he made it,and his hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God,and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.Today, if you hear his voice,do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,

as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, when your fathers put me to the testand put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.

    Night Prayer

Invitatorye prayers begin by inviting Gods presence and meditating onHis grace and forgiveness.

O God, make speed to save me;O Lord, make haste to help me.

ConfessionNow, at the close of the day, is a good time for an examination ofthe day. Where was God faithful? How did He show Himself? And in what ways did I fail to trust Him?

To confess means to say the sameto call things for what they

are, how God sees them. After making specific confession of sin, read the following:

Almighty God, our heavenly Father:We have sinned against you, through our own fault,in thought, and word, and deed,

and in what we have left undone. For the sake of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive us all our offenses;and grant that we may serve youin newness of life,to the glory of your Name. A.

the godly for himself;the Lord hears when I call to him.Be angry, and do not sin;ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent.Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord.ere are many who say,

Who will show us some good?Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord! You have put more joy in my heartthan they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep;for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

    Response
