INTRODUCTION

Stereopsia at a glance

For the ninth consecutive year, the non-profit association IMAGE&3D EUROPE is organizing Stereopsia (up until 2016, the event was called 3D Stereo MEDIA and was organized in Liège). This non-profit association is chaired by the Rector of the University of Liège, Albert Corhay, as well as a dozen members, including RTBF (the Belgian Radio & Television of the French Community), the Teaching Hospital CHU Liège, and companies from the Walloon and Brussels audiovisual sector.

This event is also called the "World Immersion Forum" because it encompasses all aspects of immersive technologies and content: 3D cinema and sound, virtual or mixed reality.

IMAGE&3D Europe is proud to organize its event in perfect collaboration with the Advanced Imaging Society and the VR Society of Hollywood, two associations created by Mr. Jim Chabin. The event is also supported by Mr. Wim Buyens, Vice President of BARCO SA, another key partner of Stereopsia.

For the first time, Stereopsia will take place in Brussels, Belgium (BOZAR) on 11-13 December 2017.This city is developing an important strategic plan, called "NextTech Plan" (see below), which puts Virtual Reality at the heart of the Plan. Stereopsia is pleased to contribute to this initiative.

Stereopsia 2017 features several professional components:

► A Scientific conference (International Conference on 3D Immersion – IC3D)

► A hands-on training in Mixed Reality (3D Academy – 3DAC)

► A springboard for VR content projects (3D Film Booster - 3DFB)

► A Professional conference (PCON)

► A exhibition area with booths and VR demos

► An competition for 3D films and 3DVR content

► An Awards dinner where Lumiere Awards from the Advanced Imaging Society and the VR Society from Hollywood are handed out to the best EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) productions.

Goals

Stereopsia is the meeting and networking place of the community of international professionals of the immersive technologies and all their applications and content (3D cinema, VR, MR, 3D sound).

3D is a technology that seems already well known to all and has been popularized by cinema in recent years… i's the tip of the iceberg. Immersive technologies are much more extensive and cover many more areas.

True to the tradition of Stereopsia to bring the crème de la crème of technology and global trends in 3D every year, the organizers wanted to show the recent evolutions in 3D visualization and in particular those which are in the process of changing our relationship with reality and our environment, not only in the entertainment sector (cinema, games…), but also in the professional and even industrial fields.

Indeed, the development of digital technology, combined with virtual and augmented reality, contributes to the development of two major branches of 3D visualization, alongside traditional cinema:

"3D Cinematic VR" has become a distinct cinematographic art which immerses the viewer in a real environment, filmed in 360°. The director’s point of view ceases to exist, and the spectator chooses to look where he wants. In just over one year, content has multiplied, and become more sophisticated.

Mixed Reality (MR) is an extension of Augmented Reality (AR), and uses new visualization headsets. Unlike Virtual Reality headsets, AR headsets are see-through. The headset generates virtual objects and adds them to your real environment. This opens huge opportunities for medicine, industry, education…

Stereopsia gives the floor to the world's leading experts to better understand the issues, the technologies and therefore the new opportunities for Europe.

The event is the meeting point for the various players in immersive technologies and content; it is therefore THE place-to-be for all professionals in the field.

Why Brussels?

Brussels, as Capital of Europe, is of course an ideal place to welcome professionals from all over the world and to honor the best productions of 3D Cinema and VR of the continent. But the main reason why the organizers have chosen Brussels is to find elsewhere.

Indeed, Brussels has an ambitious economic development plan that puts digital development - and more specifically Virtual Reality - at the heart of its strategy. The Brussels Region is mobilizing significant resources to achieve its objectives of growth and innovation, with what they call the “NextTech Plan”.

The ambition of the NextTech plan is to create an environment that supports and promotes the creation and growth of companies that are active in information and communication technologies in the Brussels Region by defining a series of objectives and concrete measures.

Dedicated to this plan, the Impulse.brussels agency, the Screen.brussels Cluster and the BEDigital.brussels Platform are the armed forces of this innovative policy. They naturally convinced the organizers of Stereopsia to contribute, through the presence of this event and the professionals it attracts, to the implementation of these actions.

The State of the European VR Industry1

Since July 2014, there is a sharp increase in the number and size of VR companies and the sector has had a strong start in 2017.

Virtual Reality is one of the hottest market for technology growth and innovation, with the potential to have an influence on various sectors.Tech.eu and LucidWeb have published a report titled “The State of the European VR Industry”. It has been prepared based on an in-depth market analysis with inputs from LucidWeb experts and Tech.eu's comprehensive database of funding rounds and exits across the European region (including states such as Russia, Turkey, Israel, Norway, Switzerland and others). This report is focused on the period of Q1 2015 to Q2 2017.

The report segments European Virtual Reality Market into: VR funding analysis and VR exit analysis.

According to the report, the total European VR funding is valued at approximately € 490.5 million in H1 2017, +128.6% over H1 2016. The UK saw its biggest ever venture financing round for a private company in May 2017 when Improbable, which offers a platform for third parties to build virtual worlds, raised an impressive € 443.7 million. With hot VR companies like Starbreeze and Crunchfish securing significant funding rounds, Sweden had the most deals at 18. The Scandinavian country, which boasts several other innovative VR companies that attracted funding, was closely followed by France, which saw 15 deals since the beginning of 2015.

Unsurprisingly, “3D Tools” was the category that saw the biggest investment over the period thanks to Improbable, while Games and User input had the highest number of deals at 16 and 15, respectively. With companies like Starbreeze, CCP Games and Ultrahaptics all attracting large amounts.

Page 7: Web viewStereopsia at a glance. 3. Goals. 4. ... A word on the initiators: ... This opens huge opportunities for medicine, industry, education

Also an impressive number of non-gaming VR companies in Europe attracted large funding rounds, such as MindMaze with its innovative healthcare system. The company received € 90.9 million investment in February 2016, and is currently valued at € 892 million.

In the video-game industry mainstay Starbreeze attracted a healthy € 36 million round in January 2016, and another of € 8 million the following June. On the chart of the top investors, the most generous was SoftBank, a Japanese telecoms giant, investing € 443.7 million into the UK's Improbable. It was one of the biggest investments ever made into an early-stage European tech firm. Followed by Hinguja Group with € 100 million and SmileGate's € 36.4 million investment in Starbreeze makes it the investor with the third-largest investment in the period.

Over the past two and half years, there have been five VR company exits in the first half of 2017, compared to three in the first half of 2016, and five in the first half of 2015.

UK leads in the number of VR startups acquired. Acquirers of UK VR companies included Facebook's Oculus (who acquired Surreal Vision and Two Big Ears) and Snap Inc., Snapchat's holding company (who acquired Obvious Engineering). While Sweden was close behind with four deals. And Belgium, Germany, Israel, and Switzerland each saw two exits since the beginning of 2015.

The United States, thanks to big investors such as Facebook's Oculus, Apple and Google, acquired the highest number of VR companies at 12. While in Europe Sweden acquired two companies and the United Kingdom, France and Australia each only acquired one.

Among all VR exits, Tobii went public in April 2015 and is worth € 221.8 million. This makes it far and away the highest value VR exit in this report.

While dwarfed by Tobii's valuation, the Israeli company Pebbles Interfaces' € 54 million acquisition was notable in that it was one of six companies bought by Facebook-owned Oculus. Its technology, which allows people to see their own hands and fingers in a virtual world, will be integral to future.

SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE (IC3D)

The Scientific conference, also called IC3D will take place in BOZAR. The latest research in 3D will be presented. The scientists submitted their papers to a jury composed of about thirty peers representing fourteen different nationalities. The selected papers are then presented in turn, either in the form of a presentation or in the form of a poster, and serve as a basis for discussions between experts. This skun-works laboratory is an international scientific and engineering conference dedicated to the multidisciplinary subject of 3D immersion in the mid and long terms, and the limits of the possible.

The IEEE, the “world's largest technical professional association for the advancement of technology” is the technical co-sponsor of the Scientific conference. This year's conference proceedings will be archived in the IEEE Xplore digital library, thereby providing maximum visibility to the authors and their papers.

3D FILM BOOSTER (3DFB)

Introduction

Stereopsia has decided to make the Film Market evolve into a new concept that seems better fitted to the new 3D films and 3DVR content projects that Stereopsia received.

The 3D Film Booster is a springboard program to help independent producers that have projects for innovative 3D contents to give an impulse to their projects. During the 3 days of the booster, experts will coach the projects holders to help them improve their projects, and help them prepare their pitch presentation to potential co-producers and investors. For the second consecutive year, the 3DFB is organized in collaboration with Sylvain Grain, a renowned 3D expert and award-winning producer. The 3D Film Booster participants have 3D VR projects in development and are looking for funding to bring their project to life. The Booster is a springboard for the productions thanks to the financial support they can find, and it also provides an increased visibility to the contents, and to the project holders. For this new edition, Stereopsia received many projects from a dozen different countries. The jury nominated 11 projects that will receive personal coaching and will have a chance to pitch to a panel of 10 potential co-producers and financiers. Producers and investors will interact during the pitching session and during B2B meetings. The 3DFB will take place from 11-13 December in BOZAR.

AWARDS COMPETITION

Introduction

Stereopsia intends to honor each year the best 3D film productions as well as the best 3D VR cinematic content from Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Technologies evolve but creativity remains. Human genius is to turn a technique into a dream machine for the pleasure of all. New visualization technologies, such as cinematic VR (360 ° cinema), bring new languages to storytelling.

These awards, bestowed in Europe for six years by two Hollywood associations, the Advanced Imaging Society and the VR Society, are an expression of the gratitude of professionals to all those who create and innovate.

In the past, prestigious names like Wim Wenders, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Martin Scorcese, Ang Lee and James Cameron received these Lumiere Awards.

Stereopsia’s organizers have received over fifty 3D cinema and VR cinematic productions for the competition. The jury met in Berlin on 3 November to view all 3D films and 3DVR content in order to select the nominated content to be presented at BOZAR in December.

From this list will come those who will receive a Lumiere Award on behalf of the Advanced Imaging Society and the VR Society of Hollywood.

In addition, the Best European Stereography Award will be bestowed upon a stereographer for his/her decisive contribution to 3D techniques and content.
