2020. EAA President Jim Gerber said, “The organization had another tremendous
and successful year. The support we get from the community is always
overwhelming. There are so many good people here that it makes our job easier to
help and support local community projects. We already have some big plans for the
upcoming year. We’re always looking to help to make a difference in the lives of the
people around Exeland.”
PACKERS TAILGATE PARTY: Was held on Sunday, Oct. 6 on Main Street and

Happy New Year!
My Happy New Year wish for you
Is for your best year yet,
A year where life is peaceful,
And what you want you get.
A year in which you cherish
The past year’s memories.
And live your life each new day
Full of bright expectancies.
I wish for you a holiday
With happiness galore;
And when it’s done, I wish you
Happy New Year, and many more.
Wisconsin sport teams have excelled this year. Here is a list of success stories: The Milwaukee Brewers made the major league baseball playoffs. The Wisconsin Badgers girl’s volleyball team made it into the national collegiate finals before losing to 3-time champion Stanford. The Wisconsin Badgers won their Big-10 division when they pounded the Minnesota Gophers in Minnesota. They lost to Ohio State for the overall title but were still selected to play in the prestigious Rose Bowl game on New Year’s Day. The Milwaukee Bucks currently have the best record in NBA basketball at 27-4 and are the best team in the world. The Green Bay Packers won the North Division and will advance to the NFL playoffs. They clinched the title when they whipped the Minnesota Vikings in Minnesota. They have earned the #2 seed and get a first round bye. Congrats to Halle Anderson (daughter/ Andy & Missy Anderson) on being named to the Lakeland All-Conference and All-Area volleyball teams. The senior had an outstanding year and these awards were well deserved. Congrats to Chris on being named as the quarterback to the All-Area football team. Chris is only a sophomore so there is more good stuff to come in the next couple of years. Congrats to Reahanna Hopkin (daughter/Mike & Jodi Hopkin) on making the All-Area Cross Country team. Reahanna is only a freshman so look forward to many exciting things to happen in her running future!
SPORTSOur Sincere Sympathy
The Exeland community would like to extend
their condolences to the families on the recent passing of:
Judy Vitcenda (Oct. 26)
Grace Dantzman (Dec. 5)
Lois Gerber (Dec. 9)
Wonderful people who will be missed by all of Exeland.
NEW PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT
The family of Lois Gerber is donating $2,000 in her memory to
the Exeland Area Association. The money will be used to
purchase additional playground equipment to be installed at the
baseball park (Pat’s Playground). The EAA will match these
funds and will install the same playground equipment at Swan
Creek Park.
Jim Gerber said, “Mom would be proud of this project. She loved
kids, baseball and the community. All of my brothers and sisters
are happy to present this gift to the Exeland community. Mom
was a true ambassador to Exeland and this will keep her legacy
alive.”

EXELAND LITTLE LIBRARY
The Exeland Little Library in front of the Exeland Area
Association has been a huge success. There has been a great
turnover in books. To accommodate more books a larger wooden
box will be installed this spring. The purpose of the library is to
promote & inspire reading and to get previously stored books
circulated into the public.
If you have any books you would like to share you can leave them
at the front door of the Association building. Don’t forget to leave
your name so we can say thank you for the donation. Many people
have left books but we don’t know who you are. Thank you Lori
Larson for your donation!!
The EAA is looking for someone to be in charge of this project.
The job requires the person to pick up the donated books and to
change the book selection on occasion. Please call Janet Gerber at
(715)943-2242 if you are interested in being a part of this great
community project.
NEW CAFÉ OWNERS
Brenda and Brad Beise have sold the Village Café after operating the main street business for the past 17 years. The new owners Natolie and
Jim Potter opened Potters Place on January 2. Thank you Brenda and Brad for your community service. Your café was the best! Stop in and give the new owners of the café a warm welcome to Exeland!
BANK CLOSES
Superior Choice Credit Union closed the bank in Exeland effective
December 1. There had been a bank operating in Exeland for 100+ years.
This no doubt was a very sad day for the community. Janet Gerber has
been the bank manager of the Exeland bank for the past 40 years. Her
smiling face and community service will be missed by all of her loyal
customers. Thank you Janet and everyone hopes that you find a fun and
exciting future ahead of you.

Speaking of the bank, it was 10 years ago on
Halloween when a suspect who robbed the bank
was shot and killed near Bruce after trying to make
an escape.
Betty Bartlett celebrated her 100th birthday on
Sunday, November 10th at the United Methodist
Church. Happy birthday Betty!!
Another fun Santa Shop was held at the Weirgor
Town Hall on Saturday, December 14. Once
again, the local kids could come and shop for
presents for their family members. A big thank to
Michele Meyers for keeping the tradition of this
great event going. Besides shopping, the kids got
to meet Santa Claus and get a big bag of goodies.
Thank you Dave Grindheim for taking on the role
of Santa!
The United Methodist Church held their annual
cookie & cake walk on Saturday, December 14.
The event was a huge success and the church
would like to thank a very generous community for
their overwhelming support.
Area hunters weren’t very satisfied with the recent
deer gun hunt. The buck kill was down 48% in
Sawyer County. This was pretty much the same
results the Exeland hunters experienced. But there
were some reasonable excuses/explanations made:
too much snow, too windy, not enough sunshine,
the rut was over, too many turkeys, too much
standing corn and the Packers lost on Monday
night of the deer hunt. Or maybe there just weren’t
as many deer as predicted!
A LOOK INTO THE PAST
In the Exeland News reported by local reporter
Dave Vitcenda he mentioned that movie star Gene
Blakely was on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Gene grew up in the Exeland area during the 30’s
and 40’s and went on to have a successful acting
career. His biggest success came in New York
Broadway plays. He also appeared in the Walt
Disney movie “That Darn Cat” and the “Sand
Pebbles”. Television series that he appeared in
were “Bewitched”, “All in the Family”, “Maude”
and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”.
Gene came back to visit Exeland in the mid-70’s
where he watched the local Braves team play a
baseball game. He passed away in 1987 of cancer
and is buried in Iowa alongside his parents, Albert
and Gladys. When Albert and Gladys resided in
Exeland they were good friends to Charlie and
Coral Waite.
Another movie star that had ties to Exeland is
Denise Richards. Denise was the granddaughter to
the late Shirley and Art Lehman of Lehman’s Pub
on Windfall Lake. She was from Chicago and
would visit her grandparents in Exeland during the
summer months.
In the late 90’s, while making the movie Starship
Troopers, she returned to Exeland to visit her Aunt
Patty Burgess. One of her biggest fans was Amber
Gerber. Patty arranged a meeting between the two
of them and they had a great visit. Denise was
married to Charlie Sheen. She has appeared/is
appearing in numerous other movies and currently
stars on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”

SORENSEN OUTFITTERS
NATURE TRAIL: Located at the Sports Center is open during the winter months for snowshoeing or cross country
skiing. The trail is open everyday to the public and there is no fee to use it.
The Club presented Birchwood School $500 for their outdoor activity and education program. Instructed by Eric
Rademaker and David Lorentz, the program is so successful that both instructors received an award by the Wisconsin
Wildlife Federation as the best in the state. The Club was happy to help them out with the donation.
At the October meeting, Brad Beise thanked the Club for honoring him and Brenda as Grand Marshalls at this year’s
Trout Fest. Brad then made everybody in attendance very happy when he bought a round of drinks. Thanks Brad!!
The Club donated $100 to the Bruce High School yearbook.
Club member Chance Brown worked with the DNR this past summer to study blowfish in the local lakes and gave a
report to the club on their findings. The Club helped fund some of the project. A blowfish is a kinder word for
dogfish.
A big thank you to Judy Liesch and Roy Jenness for the donations of water fowl collector plates. The plates were
donated in memory of Judy’s mom, the late Verna Janneck. The plates will be put on display in clubhouse.
The last day of the trap shooting by the club was held on October 15th.
The Club held their annual ATV ride on Saturday, October 19th. This year the trip wound through the Blue Hills and
ended up in Weyerhaeuser.
The Club had a large expense when they had to replace the boiler system in the Clubhouse. In the near future the
Club will also have to replace a refrigerator and a freezer that are worn out.
Ron Stewart (Ojibwa) and Glen Schwarz (Ojibwa) won the two shotguns that were raffled off at the October meeting.
THANK YOU MIKE SORENSEN!! Mike donated $400 to the Club. He promised to donate $25 for every successful
bear hunt he had this fall. There were 16 successful hunts guided by Sorensen Outfitters this year.
HUNTERS BALL: The Club held their annual Hunters Ball on Friday, November 8th at their clubhouse. This event
is the organization’s appreciation night and is for members only. WINNING GUNS THAT NIGHT WERE: Kris
Daniels (MN); Todd Stewart (Eau Claire); Jim Gerber (Exeland); Conner Kopras (Exeland); Robert Deach
(Exeland); Bob Desmith (Radisson); Denny Kopras (Exeland); Paul Lelinski (Milwaukee); Russell Hanson
