Scope of Study

Reading is a complex and purposeful

sociocultural, cognitive, and linguistic

process in which readerssimultaneously use their knowledge

of spoken and written language, their

knowledge of the topic of the text,

and their knowledge of their cultureto construct meaning with text.

There are three styles of readingwhich we use in different

situations:

for getting the gist of something

newspaper or magazine: you read quickly to get themain points, and skip over the detail. It's useful to

4. Use skimming when you're trying to decide if a

book in the library or bookshop is right for you.

for a specific focus The technique you use when you're lookingup a name in the phone book: you move your eye quickly over thepage to find particular words or phrases that are relevant to the taskyou're doing.

It's useful to scan parts of texts to see if they're going to be usefulto you:

the introduction or preface of a bookthe first or last paragraphs of chapters

the concluding chapter of a book.
