COLLEGE ACTIVITIES

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) has been regularly holding staff

meetings on the first Wednesday of every month to discuss and analyze the

activities and future plans of the various departments and societies of the

college. The IQAC has been orienting all the staff members towards NAAC‘s

preparation of Self Study Report. In the IQAC staff meetings, faculty members

are also given demonstrations of ICT enabled techniques being introduced in

the college. The faculty members were familiarized with use of smart boards and

online leave panel.

IQAC along with AEPIC organized a Two Days Workshop on ―Team Building‖

conducted by Mr. Digvijay Rajpoot, Master Skill Trainer, Centum Learning, for

faculty members of the college from 22nd to 23rd March, 2018. A two day

workshop on same theme was also arranged from 26th to 27th March, 2018 for

the non-teaching staff.

Academic and Extracurricular Planning and Implementation Committee

(AEPIC) Report

The AEPIC had forwarded a proposal towards the end of the last academic

session for initiating UG courses (Honors) in Home Science, Sociology and

Psychology. The Principal and GB recommended these for further action to

the University. AEPIC also forwarded a proposal for introduction of

Discipline Courses in Physical Education and Computer Application for B.A.

Programme students, which were duly approved by the University and were

launched in the academic session 2017-18.

In this academic year, AEPIC opened the ECA quota for admissions to

broader categories including Dance and Choreography, Digital Media,

Debate, Vocal and Instrumental Music, Fine Arts and NCC. In all, ten add-on

courses were offered in the 2017-18 session. Five language courses

(Certificate Courses in Chinese, Japanese, French, German and Spanish)

were launched. New courses - 2D/3D, Still Motion, English Communication

and Personality Development were introduced. Women and Legal Literacy,

MS Office and Advanced Excel were continued.

A half-day Orientation was organized by AEPIC to help students understand

the courses on offer. Banners, standees and kiosks were set up for the

purpose. GE and SEC options were prepared in consultation with Option

Information Committee (OIC) based upon student choices. The entire

exercise was conducted digitally and students filled their options on Google

forms designed by the Committee. The data collected was uploaded on the

college website to help provide students and teachers greater clarity.

Google forms were also used for new admissions for the academic year

2017-18. Study leave applications for Ph.D. were received from Themichon

Ramson, Assistant Professor Department of Political Science and A.

Porchelvi, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce.

AEPIC also started online learning courses with AZIKSA with no registration

fee. Three of the approved courses are Communication and Personality

Development, Career Preparation and Networking and Soft Skills. Another

initiative was the opening of online submission of assignments. Emphasizing

value-based education, AEPIC also rolled out a motivational lecture series

in January 2018. The first lecture in the series was organized by the

Department of Commerce.

CSR AND PEACE FORUM REPORT

Lakshmibai College CSR – Initiative celebrated the World Health Day on 7th April

2017, by fixing a talk on Women Hygiene and Health by Padmashree Ms. Santosh

Yadav. A Two Days Free Health Checkup Camp was coordinated by Lakshmibai

College in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research

Center, Artemis Hospital and Help 3 on November 1-2, 2017, in the college

campus for students, teachers, staff and the women from the neighborhood

area. On 1st November 2017 a lecture on cancer awareness by oncologist from

Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center took place. Besides a One

Day Free Health Checkup Camp was organized on International Womens‘ Day

on 8th March 2018 in collaboration with Vijnana Bharti and Max Super Specialty

Hospital Shalimar Bagh.

The Forum organized a Peace Seminar in India on the ―Implementation of

International Law, the Cessation of War and Achievement of World Peace ―in

collaboration with HWPL South Korea on 26th April 2017.

OIC- Option Information Committee

Option Information Committee manages the various aspects integrated with the

optional courses such as Generic Elective (GE), Skill Enhancement courses

(SEC) and Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) introduced in the

Choice Based Credit System. The committee formulated an innovative online

form for the new admissions to the Honours as well as Programme courses in

the academic session 2017-18

Proctorial Board and Students‘ Union

The Students‘ Union was involved in various activities throughout the year. In

the beginning of the academic year, the Union took the initiative to introduce

newcomers to faculty members. First year student were also informed about

and introduced to various literary , cultural societies and add-on courses

offered at the orientation program held on 20 July 2017. An interactive session

was also organized. The Union celebrated Independence Day on 14 August

2017, marked by the rendition of patriotic songs and performances. Hon‘ble

former Chief Minister of Delhi Shiela Dixit was the Chief Guest on this occasion.

DUSU and college elections were held on 12 September 2017. A Freshers‘

Welcome Party was organized on 3rd November 2017, the highlight of which was

the ―Miss LBC‖ contest. The winner was appointed the brand Ambassador of the

Clean and Green Mission by the Principal.

The Annual Inter College Cultural Festival Vividha held on 26-27 March, 2018

witnessed a number of inter-college competitions.

The Proctorial Board aims at maintaining discipline and order in college. The

Board‘s work includes: I-card checking at the entrance gate, disallowing the use

of cell phones in classrooms and corridors and ensuring silence zone and

tobacco-free campus. Anti ragging has also been a key initiative of the Board.

Website Committee Report

The College has a well-designed and updated website in order to disseminate

timely information to various stakeholders for transparency. The website

committee is constantly working towards expanding the scope and increasing

the operational efficiency of college website which include Online Admissions,

students‘ monthly attendance and internal assessment, pre-filled customized

examination form for the students, display of college timetable, dissemination of

information to the students through student zone, dedicated link for short-term

add-on courses, students and parents feedback, alumni registration, RFID ID

card management etc.

The website committee helped in conducting Recruitment Process of Non-

Teaching staff online through the College website. Currently, it is working upon

implementing the Mobile & Web Digital Campus solution to facilitate seamless

flow of information. It will include Web Digital Campus (Student Web Portal),

Student Registration Module, Semester Migration, Time-Table, Attendance,

Assessment Module and Email Integration.

Placement Cell

Rightly named WINGS, the Placement Cell provides training, placements,

internships and fellowships. A number of students have got a chance to sit for

various off-campus placement and internship drives conducted by IDBI, British

Telecom, Alight Solutions, Convergys, Motilal Oswal, TATA Power DDL, Travel

Breed, Tommy Hilfiger, Connect2India and Eat My News. In September 2017,

twenty seven students were selected as Management Trainees for a Winter

Internship at IDBI Federal. The first ever ―Job Fair‖ of the college was organized

in collaboration with 247dreamjob.com.

Workshops and seminars on topics like Resume Writing and Interview Handling

were conducted to hone the skills of students. Training Villa organized a

personality development workshop in October and Time also conducted a

workshop on ―Guesstimates‖ in March. The Placement Cell is also associated

with various internship portals such as: Internshala, Interntheory, Sociowash

and Financial Doctors. Many of our students were invited for summer Internship

Programs and fellowship opportunities through Teach For India and Gandhi

Fellowship Programs.

The Placement Cell has an interactive corner on the college website and social

media platform to facilitate better connectivity with the corporate world and the

Central Placement Cell, DU.

Women‘s Development Centre

Women‘s Development Centre (WDC) organised an orientation program

followed by a screening of "Let the Body Speak" on the eve of International

Women's Day. A poster making competition -- on "Women and Violence"; and

"Women and Freedom" -- was also held.

The WDC is organised a lecture on "Sexual harassment at Workplace" on 4 April

2018.

Sanrakshan

Sanrakshan convened various campaigns and awareness programs for

environmental awareness throughout the year 2017-18. Pledge by students and

faculty for Swachchta drive, awareness program and pledge for ―no to plastics‖,

awareness program for celebrating eco-friendly Deepawali, awareness program

for celebrating eco- friendly Holi (promoting ―save water‖, use of herbal colours

and flowers) and on the occasion of World water day on 22nd March, the society

organized awareness program on various strategies to use water judiciously

and promote its saving. These are the highlights for the year. We are planning to

hold Workshop on ―Integrated waste management‖.

Enabling Unit for Differently Abled

The Unit provided counseling and guidance to the differently abled students of

our college. The students were guided in the application process for

scholarship/fellowship and other activities of organized and unorganized sector.

Students, with visual disabilities, were provided with software enabled laptops

— such as ―JAWS‖; ―NVDA‖; and ―SAFA‖ — to help them in their studies. A

special computer lab — known as the ―Enabling Unit Computer Lab‖ — which

was reopened on 3 October 2016 help the students in the academic venture. A

computer instructor for skill development was appointed for visually challenged

students. A group of volunteers were assigned the task of assisting differently

abled students in preparing assignments and filling up different kinds of forms

throughout the year. An interactive session, with the help of The Blind

Foundation, was organized in college.

Youth Red Cross Society

The Youth Red Cross Society is a humanitarian initiative of Lakshmibai College.

In its first major initiative, the society organized a ―Short-term Training on First

Aid‖ in collaboration with St. John Ambulance Delhi (Indian Red Cross) on 8

November 2017. Students and faculty participants were made aware of

emergency situations; the risks that patients face; patient and caregiver

vulnerability; and cope skills when no immediate medical help is available. The

Youth Red Cross Society aims to continue with capacity building programs

and volunteer training.

Library Committee

The Library Committee has been working tirelessly for over a year now. The

three-story structure is being renovated and seating arrangements are being

improved upon. We hope to realize the target of a well-equipped library. Old

books have been weeded out and new books have been placed into circulation .

In January 2018, the process of weeding-out was initiated and old books were

put on sale for a nominal fee.

On 2 February 2018, the Annual Book Fair was organized. More than twenty five

book stalls placed the latest books on offer. The event saw enthusiastic

participation. Four competitions were organized on the occasion: book art

designing, book mark making, slogan writing and poster designing. The

endeavor to improve the Library continues.

Medical Committee

The Medical Committee and the CSR Initiative organized a Health Mela on the 1

and 2 November 2017. A team of doctors- from Artemis and Rajiv Gandhi Cancer

Institute- were available for free consultation. Cardiologists, gynecologists, ENT

doctors, eye specialists and orthopedic doctors were invited.

A lecture on Cancer Awareness was organized by Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital.

The Medical Committee also organized a lecture on ―Stress Management and

the Right ways of Preparing for Exams‖ on 9 November 2017. A second Health

Mela was organized on 8 January 2018. There was a large turn-out on both days.

National Service Scheme (NSS)

The NSS Society has had many achievements this year. The NSS celebrated

International Yoga Day with much fanfare. A Yoga session and talk was also

organized by the unit. A Voter‘s ID Campaign was organized. Officials from Delhi

Election Commission , spoke about the importance of voting. In the first week of

August, twenty volunteers visited AIIMS and attended a seminar on ― Updates in

Management of Breast Cancer‖ conducted by ISCO.

The NSS Unit of Lakshmibai College organized a cleanliness drive in college on

11 August 2017, which was followed by a pledge on Swachhta. This was

followed by a cleanliness drive in village Wazirpur, adopted by Lakshmibai

College. The objective was to raise awareness on the significance of cleanliness

and hygiene. A youth Parliament was organized by the college Committee. NSS

volunteers attended the same and ensured the smooth functioning of the

Parliament. A River for Rally Campaign and Workshop was conducted in college

premises on 1 September 2017. Almost forty volunteers participated. A slogan

writing competition and documentary film screenings were organized for the

same. In September, the NSS conducted a donation drive called "Umeed-e-

muskurahat". College students, teachers and residents living nearby donated

books, clothes and other eatables in donation boxes placed outside the library.

The donation was distributed to the residents of Wazirpur village.

A two-day Health Mela was organized, along with a Blood Donation Camp, on the

second day. The Health Mela was conducted in collaboration with Artemis

Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center, Help 3 Foundation

and the Indian Red Cross Society. A street play on blood donation was put up. A

total of eleven litres of blood was collected. Umang, the dramatics society of the

NSS Unit, performed a street play- "Padgirls"- on menstruation. The play was

later filmed on television. Dr. Pratyush Vatsala was invited by Doordarshan for

the chat show - "Tejaswini "- where she spoke about menstrual hygiene and the

need for providing free sanitary napkins to the underprivileged.

A seminar on Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency was organized in February. The NSS

Unit of Lakshmibai College organized its first-ever Annual Fest. Participants

designed dresses from waste materials, paper or other ragged products which

was followed by a ramp walk. An offline photography competition was organized

based upon the theme of India's cultural diversity. A case study competition was

organized dealing with the problems of Seemapuri Village. An impromptu event

was organized on key social issues. Slam Poetry was organized as part of the

annual festival. A talent hunt competition -"Sampoorn"­ was organized for the

differently abled. A total of sixty students participated from all over Delhi.

On 26 February 2018, twenty young and sprightly women from Tunisia, North

Africa visited Lakshmibai College under an International Youth Exchange

Program. The college National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit introduced the girls

to Indian culture. Volunteers spoke about the "Not Me But You" motto of

selflessness.

It was followed by a screening which showcased the core area of work of the

NSS. The session was a huge success.

53rd Annual Day Celebration, Commencement Ceremony and Farewell

Program

Lakshmibai College celebrated 53rd Annual Day and Commencement Ceremony

on 25th April, 2018 in the College premises. Honourable Chief Guest, Shri

Amarendera Khatua, IFS, was invited as the chief guest for the program. Mrs.

Rakhee Gupta Bhandhari, IAS, was the distinguished guest. The programme

started in the presence of the eminent guests who were felicitated and given a

memento by the college Principal Dr. Pratyush Vatsala. The event was

inaugurated with the lightning of the lamp followed by Durga Stuti.

The Principal, Dr. Pratyush Vatsala after pronouncing the highlights of the

Principal's report 2017-18, in her address emphasized on the need to

incorporate spirit of interrogation and curiosity as a key for innovative teaching -

learning education model. She congratulated the college for attaining 80th rank

among 100 top institutes of India under NIRF. She also informed the audience

about the efforts of the college in the enhancement of college infrastructure like

open gym, solar panels etc. Jyoti 2017-18, college magazine, was released by

the Principal and our distinguished guests.

Mrs. Rakhee Gupta in her address marked the need of recognising the

importance of being a woman first to the students. Shri. Amarendera Khatua

offered to invite eminent guests and to arrange interacting sessions with the

students on the preparation of civil services in near future. Both the guests

encouraged and motivated the students emphasizing specially on the need to

introspect and to explore one's talents first. They also pointed out that one

should compete with oneself only and stay away from any kind of comparison.

Annual Day Celebration which is meant to honour the efforts of the students for

their achievements throughout the year. The prizes were distributed in different

categories starting from the academic front to the field of sports. The large

audience was entertained with cultural programs including classical dance,

yoga formation and sufi performance by the students to represent the culture of

our country.

Prof. Inder Mohan Kapahy, member (UGC) was the distinguished guest for the

Commencement Ceremony, which was organised for the very first time in the

college after the lunch. Few students from different courses shared their

experiences and memories with the gathering, expressing their gratitude to the

Principal, Dr. Pratyush Vatsala and to the teachers. Prof. Kapahy congratulated

the college for initiating the commencement ceremony and for college‘s

commendable efforts in social services. He motivated the students to have open

mind to exercise their mental faculties in the best way possible. He articulated

that every college is efficient and competent which provides a platform to every

student to explore and showcase one‘s talents. The address was followed by a

Tilak Cermony, Parting Gift distribution and Batch photos with their respective

departments. A huge gathering of enthusiastic and cheering students, staff,

retired teachers and non teaching staff made it a memorable celebration.

Sunday College Activities:

The college has been involved in a philanthropic mission, an initiative called ―

WISHVAS‖, which involves teaching the under privileged children on Sundays ,

keeping them active in a playful manner with the use of prayer songs, games,

reading books etc. They have also been invited in the LBC campus to enjoy the

sprawling greens the college boasts of. Apart from the Principal Dr. Pratyush

Vatsala, teachers and students from Political Science discipline, the Home

Science students (Food Technology and Apparel Designing and Construction)

have also joined for Survey and Skill Training with two initiatives Parvarish and

Kala Me. The college has already initiated the production of Sanitary napkins

and they also distributed the same amongst women and adolescent girls as a

part of the Sunday college activity. The diligences of the college teachers and

students have proved to be fruitful in many ways.

The Visit of Varun Dhawan for the Promotion of His Movie ―October‖

On 4th of April, 2018, the college witnessed a frenzied atmosphere as renowned

Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan came to the LBC campus to promote his

upcoming movie ― October‖ which he described as a story about love, not a

mere love story! He interacted spontaneously with the students, sang and

danced to the song ―Theher Ja‖ from the movie, and picked some students from

the crowd to come up on stage and interact with him. Dr. Pratyush Vatsala, the

Principal, greeted him with a bouquet and much warmth. He left the campus,

leaving the students wishing for more of him!

Open Gym Inauguration

On 20th of April, the college had invited Hon‘ble M.P. Dr. Harshvardhan Walia, to

inaugurate the newly constructed Open Gym , which is a part of the series of

construction initiatives the college has undertaken. From the very beginning, the

inauguration ceremony was an energy infused affair as many teachers, non-

teaching staff and student union members were present there. The speech of

Dr. Harshvardhan was followed by a rather fun-filled activity where he and the

Principal, Dr. Vatsala used each and every equipment and inspired others to do

the same. The creation of the open gym within the campus is a timely reminder

of the need to maintain a balance between physical health and intellectual

growth. The inauguration ceremony was followed by the teachers‘ lunch.

Parent -Teachers‘ Meet 2018

On 27th of April, the college had organized a P.T.M., along with a career

counseling session and an Emotional Quotient test. These initiatives were

planned keeping in mind the holistic development of the students and to

facilitate transparent interaction and cooperation between the parents and the

faculty members, so that both parties are aware of the students‘ academic

development. The event had witnessed energetic participation on behalf of both

the students and the faculty members, especially on the last day of the

semester, with the teachers providing their complete attendance and

assessment records to present a clear picture to the parents.

Various Other Programs and Initiatives Organized By the College, At a

Glance

On 20th of March, to create awareness on cleanliness issues, the Delhi

Public Library Committee had organized a debate competition at the

college campus.

On 21st of March, a valedictory session for Communication and Personality

Development Add on course was organized where Dr. Pramila Garg, a

retired faculty of Daulat Ram College gave a lecture.

On 11th of April, an Orientation session for Civil Service (UPSC) was

organized in collaboration with ―Samkalp‖, where Dr. B.R Patil, IRS of

2015 batch had shared tips for preparation; and this event had witness

maximum participation from the students.

On 12th of April, A lecture on Knowledge Management was organized

where the speaker Mr. Anil Negi, the GM Head, Knowledge Management,

ONGC, had enlightened the students and teachers alike.

SOCIETIES

English Literary and Debating Society –Rhetoricians

The English Literary and Debating Society regularly organizes events like

creative writing competitions, essay writing competitions, film screenings,

and its signature event - the English Literary Fest "Epiphany"18.

To begin with, a film screening was held, but this time, along with a

review writing competition. The screening was followed by a lively and

involved discussion led by faculty members Dr. Anju Dahiya, Mr.

Ratnakar Kumar and Ms. Pracheta Bakshi. This year several films were

screened –―The Namesake‖, ―The Perfect Murder‖, ―Juice‖ and

―Chutney‖. The next event was an in-house debate on the "Imposition of

any One Language is an instance of Forced Homogenization".

"Epiphany"18 - the English Literary Fest - included many highlights -

"Quiz'zically Yours", "Canvas Stories", "Crossfire" and "Mind to Mic".

"Crossfire" elicited keen participation from many colleges. The topic -

''The Malaise in the Body Politic is infecting Institutions of Higher

Learning" - was a parliamentary debate where teams simulated the

ruling and the opposition parties in the Parliament. "Mind To Mic"

encouraged students to compose on-the-spot slam poetry. The event saw

good participation and it was delightful to watch the contestants perform.

Words Unlimited

Words Unlimited, the official literary wall magazine of Lakshmibai College,

was established for the sole purpose of inducing a kind of appreciation for

the written word. A theme is chosen for the month. Students then sketch

illustrations that evoke a physical meaning from the abstract to help create a

visual journey into the landscape of Words Unlimited. The annual fest

"Novartis" was held with much fanfare in October 2017. Words Unlimited

launched four issues this year - August- "Introductory Issue", October­

"Anniversary Issue", January- ―Misconceptions", February/March- "New

Beginnings".

The Philosophical Society-Sophia

Sophia commenced the academic session with an orientation programme

on 22 July 2017. A movie, "The Ship of Theseus", was screened followed

by an interactive discussion. The Society also organized an annual

Cultural fest "Pratibimb" on 15 March 2018.

Music and Dance Society

Students, of the Music and Dance Society, performed successfully in

college events like - Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Republic Day

and Martyrs' Day. They also participated in the inter­ college solo song and

dance competition held on 9 March 2018 in GIBS, Rohini, I. P. University.

Music and Dance Society organized an inter-class music competition

and inter-class solo song competition in September 2017.

Navrangg-The Dramatics Society of Lakshmibai College

The Society performed a street play "Bezubaan" and a stage play "Vidya

Kasem" at the Orientation Day. The street annual production "Emergency"

and stage annual production "Javeda ka Khatt" were performed in forty

different colleges of Delhi University and institutes like Sahitya Kala

Parishad and National School of Drama. The Society also organized a thirty-

day workshop. The theatre fest - Kalamay‖ 18 - which began with - ―Third

Bell‖, was held on 15 March 2018.

Punjabi Literary and Cultural Society

The Punjabi Literary Society conducted many events this year.

On 16 October 2017 an inter-college poster making competition was

organized by the Society. The Society and Punjabi Pracharni Sabha

organized an inter-college poetry recitation competition on 25 October

2017. Our college organized a book mark making competition on 2 February

2018. Nupur Chaudhary ­ a student of the Punjabi Department- got the

third prize. Our students participated in a quiz- and folksong- competition at

S.G.N.D Khalsa College. They performed exceedingly well and won many

prizes at the event. Mata Sundari College organized a paper reading

competition on 7 February 2018. Our student- Muskan Verma - bagged the

third position. S.G.T.B. Khalsa College organised a quiz competition on

27 February 2018. Two teams, from our college, took part in this

competition. Our first team of two students - lshpreet Kaur and Ritika

- bagged the first position in the competition. The second team of two

students - Babli and Shivani - secured the third position.

Sanskrit Literary Society

The Sanskrit Literary Society remained busy throughout the year. Our

students participated in diverse Inter college competitions like -

"Shloka-Recitation","Ved-Mantrocharan" and "Vaad-Vivad". They did

us proud by performing exceedingly well and bagging awards and prizes

at these events.

The Sanskrit Society organized three inter-class competitions: "Patra-

Vachan", "Shloka-Vritti" and "Ved-Mantrocharan". An inter-college

"Sanskrit Vaad-Vivaad Pratiyogita" was organized by the Society. The

event, which was sponsored by the Sanskrit Academy, was very well

attended and was a great success. The Society also organised a symposium

on "Sanskrit Evam Jansanchar Madhyam: Dasha Evam Disha".

NESDALF

NESDALF is a society of students from the Northeastern states of India, Ladakh,

Darjeeling and foreign countries like Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. On the 3rd of

November 2017, NESDALF students performed a Manipuri dance at the

Freshers' Meet of NESSDU (North East Students' Society of Delhi University).

The Society had its annual get together for the session 2017-18 on the 23rd of

April 2018. The get together was marked by a variety of events including the

selection of Miss NESDALF from amongst the 1st year students, farewell to the

outgoing students, quiz competition and speeches from conveners and student

president of the society. Students from the society also represented the college

and participated in various events at the fests of North East Societies in other

colleges.

Gandhi Study Circle

The Gandhi Study Circle of Lakshmibai College celebrated hundred years of

Champaran Satyagraha this year. To commemorate the centenary of this

landmark struggle and also pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his one

hundred and forty eighth birth anniversary, the Study Circle organized a

workshop on "Spinning Charkha" on 13 October 2017. There was also a

discussion on how charkha was the physical embodiment and symbol of

Gandhi‘s philosophy.

An inter-department poster making competition was also held on the

theme of Champaran Satyagraha. The Study Circle also organized an

extempore event on 31January 2018.

Economics Society (ÉParcus)

The Economics Society organized the following academic and fun-filled

events during 2017-18. A stimulating "Doodling Event" was held on 1 0

January 2018 in which students put in their creative best in competing for

the best design for the logo of department hoodies. A seminar on

"Career Counseling" was conducted on 9 February 2018. The 7th Annual

Inter-College Economics Festival, ―Breakeven 2018", was organised on

12 February 2018. Teams, from several colleges of Delhi University,

participated enthusiastically. A ''Youth Motivational Counseling Session"

was conducted in college premises by Pearl Academy.

The Economics Society organized five major events this year: "Corporate

Emperors",''Zoomonomics", ''The Peddling Freak", "Economics

Rendezvous" and "Bet You Know It". Students did exceedingly well and

secured top ranking positions in several competitions.

Eco Club

An intensive national cleanliness campaign - the Swach Bharat

Abhiyan- was launched by the Government of India in 2014. Lakshmibai

College, pursuant to the vision, launched the special cleanliness drive

and formally constituted the Clean and Green Mission to that effect. The

Committee organized a massive cleanliness drive on 27 September

2017,13 October 2017 and 16 March 2018. The Principal initiated the

program by cleaning the college campus. Teachers and student

DEPARTMENTS

Department of Commerce

With feet set firm, the Department of Commerce, embarked upon its

journey with major milestones to be covered in the academic session

2017-18. The Department of Commerce conducted the first-ever M.Com

Pre-entrance Coaching Classes held in college from 13 to 28 June 2017.

The objective was to enable students, from disadvantaged sections of

society, to strive towards better qualifications and jobs in the field of

higher education.

This has been a pioneering initiative at the college level with a success rate

of 27 percent admissions in Regular and School of Open Learning. The

Commerce Society organized a Department Orientation Program for

new entrants. The Department also conducted various other events. The

series started with an "Ice-breaking Session" to help students acquire a

sense of confidence. It was followed by a "Two-facet Group Discussion"

and included extempore sessions and marketing tips and guidelines for

students. A seminar on GST was organised in November 2017. In

January 2018, the Commerce Society invited a world-renowned

motivational speaker, Ron Malhotra, for a lecture on "Becoming a Key

Person of Influence".

The month of February 2018 witnessed the most awaited departmental

fest - "Comspect".

The events comprised - a case study competition, a business quiz,

an on-the-spot speech competition and a brands-logos identification

game. The festival witnessed a footfall of almost five hundred students from

different colleges.

Department of Economics

ÉParcus, the Economics Society for budding economists initiated its work with

the election of the office bearers. For the first-time, an interesting Doodling

Event was held on 10 January 2018 in which students competed for the best

design for the logo for the department hoodies. A seminar on ‗Career

Counseling‘ was conducted by ‗Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies‘

on 09 February 2018, followed by a vibrant interactive session. On 12 February

2018, ÉParcus organized the 7th Annual Inter-College Economics Festival,

BREAKEVEN 2018 that saw an overwhelming response of teams from various

colleges. A ‗Youth Motivational Counseling Session‘ was conducted by ‗Pearl

Academy‘. Amongst enthusiastic participants, organizers and volunteers, five

major events, namely, Corporate Emperors, Zoomonomics, The Peddling Freak,

Economics Rendezvous, and Bet You Know It were held in which several

students of our college secured winning positions. Numerous informal events

and fun games added to the gusto.

Department of English

2017-18 has been a fruitful and productive year for the Department of

English. An Orientation Program, at the onset of the academic year, was

organized to introduce students to the methodology of studying

literature. It was followed by a week-long lecture series. Power-point

presentations were made on topics like: ''The Ancient Greeks:

Understanding Their Relevance in the Contemporary World" and ''The

Traditions of Performance in Indian Theatre".

A documentary film - ''The Codes of Gender: Identity and Performance

in Popular Culture" - was screened to raise awareness on issues of

power, patriarchy and gender. The Annual Fest of Words Unlimited -

Novartis - was held in October. It was attended by over two hundred

people. Events like - "Unheard Voices"," Spin a Yarn" and "Depth of

Words"- evoked a hugely participatory response. Words Unlimited,

the official literary wall magazine of Lakshmibai College, brought out

several issues for publication this year. The Department has created a

blog to cater to the academic needs of students - https://wordpress.

com/ view/lakshmibaicollegedepartmentofenglish.wordpress.com. A

"Poetry Writing Workshop" was held on 16 March 2018 and the response

was overwhelming.

Department of History

In the academic session 2017-18 the Department of History planed an

educational trip for the students to the by lanes of Delhi which was named ‗The

Delhi Tour‘ in September 2017 was planned. The students visited different

historical places i.e. Agrasen ki Baoli, India Gate, National Archives and the

National Museum during the trip historical anecdotes, ranging from the earliest

times to the modern ages, about the landscape of Delhi were shared with the

students. In addition to this, educational trip to Purana Qila for the first year

honours students was organised to educate them how different historical sites

are excavated and what are the different types of excavations and importance of

archaeology in the construction of history etc.

Historia – the history society of the Department of History organized a

departmental festival on 27 Feb 2018. The festival comprised several activities

like a talk on the topic ―Political thoughts of Kautilya and Machiavelli as reflected

in the Arthashastra and the Prince‖. Poster making on the Gandhian philosophy

―peace and non-violence ―, Dastan-e-Goi [oral Urdu story telling art form] were

also the parts of the festival. Dastan-e-Goi was performed by Nadeem Shah

Seharawardy. The festival also comprised a fashion show in which the

participants wore self-designed dresses which brought alive those historical

personalities. Global pointers and the Role play on famous personalities of

history were also some of the features of the festival.

Department of Hindi

Department of Hindi worked for the welfare of the students throughout the year.

A Hindi Week Program was organized by The Hindi Sahitya Parisad from14th

September 2017 to 21st September 2017. Two Days National Hindi Seminar was

organized with the help of UGC on 14th November 2017 to 15th November 2017.

Mother Tongue Day Program was organized on 21st February 2018.

Department of Mathematics

Besides the regular curriculum, the department inspires, prepares and

empowers students to think critically and communicate mathematical concepts

effectively. Furthermore, the department wants to equip the students with the

resources necessary not only for mathematical learning but also for enabling

them to play critical roles in multitudes of fields.

In pursuance of above objective, the Mathematics Department conducted a

Science Academies Lecture Workshop for Undergraduates in Mathematics on

―Differential Equations and Mathematical Modeling‖. A three day workshop was

organized from 27th September, 2017 – 29th September, 2017. The workshop

was coordinated by our very own faculty member, Ms.Laxmi Bhati.

The workshop was sponsored by the Joint Science Education Panel of the three

academies, namely National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, Indian National

Science Academy, New Delhi and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. We

had some of the most renowned and distinguished experts from the field of

Differential Equations and Mathematical Modeling to conduct the workshop for

undergraduates.

A panel of four renowned speakers namely, Prof. Ajit Iqbal Singh (INSA Emeritus

Scientist), Prof. Subhendu Ghosh (Head of the Department of Biophysics,

University of Delhi), Prof. Vishnu Dutt Sharma (Institute Chair Professor,

Department of Mathematics, IT, Bombay) and Prof. A. K. Nandakumaran

(Department of Mathematics, IISc, Bangalore) was part of it.

Department of Philosophy

Sophia, the Philosophy society of Lakshmibai College, commenced its academic

session 2017-18 with an orientation program for the students of Philosophy on

22nd July, 2017. To develop the analytical thinking of the students, the society

began its academic events by organizing a movie screening program in which

the movie The Ship of Theseus was shown and an interactive discussion on the

movie was also held.

The department successfully convened its first two day national seminar on 23rd

and 24th February 2018, sponsored by Indian Council of Philosophical Research

(ICPR) on ―Dharma, Universality and Contingencies of Human Life‖. The Seminar

was attended by 70 faculty members and more students.

In order to enhance the all-round growth of the students, the society organized

its annual Cultural fest ‗Pratibimb‘ on 15th March 2018. The fest witnessed

various cultural activities, events and fun games. Competitions like Slam Poetry

and theme based Fashion Show draw a huge crowd where the students of

various colleges of University of Delhi participated and won attractive prizes.

Department of BBE

Department was involved in various activities in this academic year. A guest

lecture on ‗Job vs. MBA‘ was delivered by Mr Rajeev Jain in the month of

October . An Industrial Trip meant to enrich the academic experience of the

students was organised in the month of January. A 7 lecture series, 'Life is a

Game Play it' has been started in collaboration with Sathya Sai Trust. The fest of

the department of BBE took place on 20th of March. A seminar on the topic

'Leadership' was held on 28th of March 2018.

Department of Food Technology (Home Science)

The Department has had many achievements to boast of this year. The

National Nutrition Week, comprising of several events was held in

September 2017: an inter-college essay writing competition, an inter-

college poster - cum - slogan writing competition and an inter-college

recipe writing competition were the chief highlights of the week.

A public health lecture on "Nutrition in Infants and Young Children" was

organized by the Department. Students and faculty members were also

invited to participate at the National Dietetics Day on 10 March 2018.

Dr.Anita Malhotra delivered a lecture on "Ensuring Safe and Nutritious

Food" at the event. Later in the month a workshop on different types of

cake icings was conducted. An educational visit to Swami Sivananda

Memorial Institute was organised on 23 February 2018. Nutri Bite - the

highly acclaimed entrepreneurial project of the Department - entered its

second year and was hugely appreciated.

In February this year, the Department initiated a Project called "Parvarish-

Nurturing Young Children in Slums" to address the problem of

malnutrition in Wazirpur Slum. The project has been designed in three

different phases and is currently being rolled out.

Department of Apparel Design and Construction& Wall Graffiti Society

(Home Science)

Apparel Design and Construction has had a fulfilling year, abuzz with

numerous activities. A workshop was organized to revive the traditional

textile arts. The emphasis was on fabric dyeing with natural/eco­ friendly

dyes, printing with wooden blocks and constructing fabric on loom.

The Apparel Design Department and the Wall Graffiti Society transformed

the main college wall into a "War Hero Wall", to use Dr. Vatsala's words. In

keeping with the name of our institution, a prominent figure of Rani

Lakshmbai was painted. India's war heroes and Param Veer Chakra

awardees were also painted. Not to miss the pride of India -our Tricolour.

An overwhelming response of over seventy student volunteers was

received for painting the graffiti. A sketching competition was organized

where the top twenty entries were selected for display on the ADC bulletin

board. The Wall Graffiti was well covered by leading newspapers-Dainik

Jagran, Punjab Kesari, Zee News as well as Doordarshan.

The Department also organized four competitions: Sketching, T-shirt

painting, Best out of Waste Accessories and Recycle Dress Making. A

talk was organized on "Eco-friendly Technology for Washing Apparel".

Education and skills learned should be shared with the less privileged.

Following this, a visit was conducted to a nearby village to impart

entrepreneurial skills to interested village women in the field of textiles

and apparel. The faculty and students organised an annual fashion show at

Vividha. A Department exhibition will be put up on College Annual Day

where a range of products will be displayed

Department of Political Science

The Department organized an Orientation Program on 20 July 2017. An

academic visit to the Lok Sabha was arranged on 22 December 2017 to

familiarize students with parliamentary practices and debates. Our

Department was also invited to participate in a lecture series on "India's

Foreign Policy and Security Challenges" in the Convention Hall of the

Viceregal Lodge.

The year 2018 began with organizing a fifteen-day training program for

students in collaboration with Delhi Police. A two-day academic visit to

the Rajya Sabha was organised for students in February 2018 and this

enabled them to see the budget proceedings in detail. Another program

included taking students to the Constitution Club on 4 March 2018 to

attend a Seminar with two sessions: "Free and Fair Election is the Key to

Better Democracy" and "Challenges of Democracy and Dilemma of

Development". A lecture was also arranged on "Law, Justice and

Mediation". The Department is looking forward to another engaging

lecture series and Department festival at the end of the month. The

Department has organized a court visit and poster making event for B.A.

{P} paper "Democratic Awareness Through Legal Literacy".

Department of Sports

During the session 2017-18, our students participated in various sports and

games - at the National, International and State levels.

They excelled in Archery; Athletics; Ball Badminton; Baseball; Boxing; Chess;

Cricket; Cross Country; Fencing; Gymnastics; Handball; Judo; Kabaddi;

Kho-Kho; Netball; Power-lifting; Shooting; Softball; Taekwondo;

Volleyball; Wrestling; Weight-lifting; and Yoga. The achievements are

listed below.

International

Manisha Chaudhary made us proud by becoming a member of the Indian

Team in the IBFA Women's Baseball Asian Cup held at Hong Kong from 2-7

September 2017.

Divya secured Gold Medal for India in Subroto Cup International Power-

lifting Championship held at Delhi; while eight of our students participated

in the Invitational International Volleyball Tournament held at Nepal

including Priyanka, Nidhi, Sadhna, Varsha, Sahiba, Ukansha, Priyanka

Shekhawat and Seema Bisht.

National

Reecha Singh stood first in Small Bore and second in Big Bore Rifle in the

twenty seventh All India G.V. Mavlankar Shooting Championship. She also

won second position in the 60th National Shooting Championship in Big

Bore Rifle Event. Bharti secured first position in IDBI Marathon, while

Kavita stood second in Half Marathon in the same. Neeshu stood first in

4x400 m. Relay in the Federation Cup Jr. National Athletics Championship.

Sushmita won second and Monika bagged third position in Youth National

Boxing Championship. Kriti Gupta got first position and Sandhya bagged

third position in National Kurash championship; Akansha Goyal got first

position in Rural National Judo and Wrestling; Laxmi Devi stood first in Rural

National Wrestling; Monika secured third position in Kick Boxing; and

Divya bagged gold medal in Power-lifting.

In addition, there were thirty five representations at National level in

different sports. These include Athletics {Yamini and Shivani); Ball

Badminton (Sneha); Baseball (Soniya, Anjali Rawat, Nikhat, Nirmla, Neha

Gupta, Amanpreet Kaur, Siji Aniyan, Radha, Kirti,Sakshi,Megha, Bhawna,

Inter University (All India and Zonal)

Divya Aggarwal secured first position in the All India Inter University Yoga

Championship; while seven of our students stood third in the All India Inter

University Baseball Championship including Amanpreet Kaur,Siji

Aniyan,Soniya, Nirmala, Nikhat, Neha, and Neha Gupta.

Twenty one of our students represented Delhi University in All India Inter

University Competitions in different games. These include Archery

(Garima); Ball Badminton {Veena); Boxing {Varsha, Kriti Gupta); Cross

Country (Bharti,Saroj,Kavita); Fencing (Rachna); Gymnastics (Tina, Harsha

Chauhan); Judo (Kritika); Softball (Amanpreet Kaur,Siji Aniyan, Soniya,

Nikhat, Neha, Neha Gupta, Kajal,Bhumika); and Wrestling (Laxmi,

Sandhya).

Twelve students participated in Inter University Competitions at Zonal

level while representing University of Delhi. These include Cricket

(Mohini, Ekta, Vandana); Kabaddi {Ekta, Gagandeep Kaur, Sucheta); Kho-

Kho {Namita, Meenakshi); Handball (Kavita Rawat); Volleyball

(Subby,Nidhi,Ukansha).

North Zone

Yamini secured second position in North Zone Athletics in OOm.

Inter College

Three teams emerged champions in Inter College Tournaments including

Cross Country, Baseball and Softball; six teams won the second position

including Athletics, Power-lifting, Weight-lifting, Wrestling, Volleyball,

Yoga; and three teams secured third position including Cricket, Judo and

Kho-Kho ; while Boxing team remained at fourth spot.

Individually, we won a total of forty six including nine Gold; seventeen

Silver; and twenty Bronze medals.

The Gold medal winners in Athletics were (Yamini-lOOm, Bharti-lOOOOm,

Shivani-Javelin Throw); Boxing {Varsha); Judo (Kritika); Power-lifting

(Divya); Weightlifting (Divya, Tamanna); and Wrestling (Laxmi Devi).

lOOOOm; Bharti -Half Marathon Shivani; Shot Put and quartet Bharti,

Delhi State and Open Tournaments

Our Volleyball team stood first in Youth Delhi State; second in Open Delhi

State and Yuva; and third in YMCA tournament. Our Ball Badminton team

won the first position in Inter College Sports Festival at Miranda House

{Erobern) and at Maitreyi College Neeshu Kumari won gold medal in OOm

and 400m in Delhi State and got silver medal in 200m and 400m in Inter

Block; Yamini stood first in Oom; Shivani stood first in Javelin Throw and

second in Shot Put, and Bharti stood second in Long Jump. In Boxing,

Sushmita won the first position, Ritika got second and Shweta Raj

remained at third position. In Gymnastics, Tina bagged first position. In

Power-lifting, Tamanna stood first in Delhi State in both equipped and

unequipped category as well as in Bench Press and Dead Lift; Divya,

Jyoti and Muskan also stood first in the same competition in their

respective weight category in Dead-lift event. In Wrestling, Laxmi Devi

won the first position while Akansha Goyal and Sandhya Singh stood

third. In Yoga, Divya Aggarwal secured first position; Suman Rajbhar,

Sandhya, Chanchal and Kajal got second; while Nasreen Bano and Saloni

got third position. Reecha Singh of our college secured six gold medals in

Bihar State Shooting Championship.

Overall, we won a total of one hundred and twenty two medals at

various levels including forty three Gold; forty Silver; and thirty nine

Bronze medals during the session 2017-18.

Our college was allotted the responsibility of conducting Inter College

Softball and Handball tournaments, which were successfully concluded.

National Cadet Corps (NCC)

With a hundred and sixty enrolled cadets, the vibrant and industrious

National Cadet Corps (NCC) wing of Lakshmibai College has much to talk

about in terms of achievements. A former student of our college - JUO

Megha Rawat Reg. No. DLW/SW/12/41078 - topped the merit list of NCC

Special Entry Scheme to join the Indian Army. SUO Vaishnawi Kharbanda

was awarded Gold Medal for being the Best Master of Ceremony (Anchor) at

the Republic Day Parade 2018. She, along with LCPL Ritu, represented Delhi

Directorate in the Cultural Program of the RDP 2018. LCPL Ritu represented

Delhi Directorate in Squad Drill in the PM Rally; JUO Anja Ii,SGT Shivani Sharma,

CPL Karishma, SGT Pooja, SGT Vanshita, CDT Meenu, CDT Priyanka, CDT

Preeti and CDT Pooja participated in its cultural activities. Inthe same camp,

CDT Shiwani performed Para-slithering. In All India Thal Sainik Camp (TSC),

SUO Vaishanvi Kharbanda participated in the finals; while CDT Jyoti

attended its pre-final cadre.

LCPL Laxmi participated in CM Rally on Independence Day; LCPL Namrata

participated in it on the occasion of Republic Day. JUO Rashmi Dixit

participated in the Advance Leadership Camp (ALC) held at Malout,

Punjab. JUO Anuradha Singh and CPL Lovely participated in the Trekking

Camp at Baijnath, Himachal Pradesh. CQMH Neha and CPL Ayesha

participated in Trekking at Ajmer. Six of our cadets participated in the

National Integration Camp (NIC) at Chamba, Uttarakhand and secured the

first position in Group Dance; second position in Debate (SUO Vaishnawi);

third prize in National Integration Awareness Programme (NIAP); and the

Best Cadet Award (SUO Vaishnawi). The participants were SUO Vaishnawi,

SOGT AnjaIi, SGT Pooja, SGT Shivani Sharma, SGT Vanshita, CQMH Jyoti. Two

of our cadets -CDT Shabana and CDT Lata - took part in another National

Integration Camp (NIC) held at Delhi.

Ninety cadets participated in the Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC)

held at Safdarjung under the guidance of JUO Rashmi and SGT Vaishali. In

this Camp, our cadets secured the first prize in Group Song, first prize in

Solo Dance (Aarushi), second prize in Relay Race, second prize in Group

Dance, third prize in Skit and third prize in Squad Drill competition; while

in Rangoli, first in Group Dance, first in Solo Dance (CDT Preeti) and first in

Guard at SGND Khalsa College; second in Guard and second in Group

Dance at Aurobindo College; first in Best Cadet (LCPL Ritu), first in Drill and

first in Group Dance at Rajdhani College; first in Best Cadet (SUO Vaishnawi),

second in Drill and second in Group Dance at Zakir Hussain College; first in

Guard, first in Drill and first in Group Dance at Kalindi College; second in

Drill and second in Guard at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College; and first in Solo

Dance (CDT Preeti) at Swami Shradhanand College. ANO Lt. (Dr.) Seema

Kaushik (Sharma) also represented Delhi Directorate in the Special

National Integration Camp (SNIC) held at Peddapuram from 5 -16 October

2017. She was awarded Veerta Puraskar by the NGO Veerta for beingthe Best

Associate NCC Officer. She also secured a Gold Medal (200m) and a Silver

Medal (400m) in the Delhi State Masters Athletics Meet at Thyagraj Stadium.

Our cadets performed Guard of Honour to the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of

Delhi University on the occasion of Independence Day 2017; thirty two

cadets participated in International Yoga Day on 21 June 2017. NCC Cadets

also stayed firm on the pledge taken to keep Delhi clean as part of Swachh

Bharat Abhiyan Program and organised a rally in this regard. The

Commanding Officer, Bn. Col. Ram Naresh, was the Chief Guest; while our

Ex-NCC cadets - Preeti Hooda (Qualified CivilServices Exam) and Cpt. Juhi

(Indian Army) -were the Guests of Honour on the occasion of the NCC Annual

Prize Distribution Function held on 4 May 2017.

The NCC wing is in the process of conducting its first-ever Inter college

NCC Festival "Junoon" and is organizing a career oriented talk for the

cadets.

Department of Sociology

The new session proved to be yet another year of excellence for the

Department. The Department Bulletin Board was used as a platform for

themes of contemporary issues on social stratification, gender and

development. On 22 March 2018, the Department of Sociology (and its society

"SOCIOUS") organized an annual seminar on "Education of the

Marginalized". The seminar proved to be very rich and engaging.

Our annual inter-college cultural festival "Habitus 2017" was held on 2 April

2018 and was received with great enthusiasm and fervor. A series of

academic and entertaining activities were organized. Various inter- and

intra- college competitions - such as the Sociology Quiz, debates on

Gender and Violence, Nukkad Natak, Rangoli Making and Spell Bee -

evoked a participatory response.

Department of Environmental Science

The Department has always strived towards the goal of a green campus. To

this end, it has developed a holistic and integrated approach to campus

management. EVS has always tried to integrate mechanisms for

sustainability ranging from solar light to paper-recycling. Other highlights

of the year include: tree plantation, waste disposal, eco-friendly

gardening, reduction of carbon footprint, energy conservation and the use of

renewable energy. EVS students regularly organize cleanliness drives on the

College Campus and participate in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Tree plantation is a key initiative of the department. For the last two years, a

practice of planting a new tree on the Annual Day has been followed. The

department also maintains the front garden and the back compound

gardens. Disposal of segregated waste is another key initiative of the

department. It can be a real problem for the environment as it is non-

degradable and is highly toxic. Awareness programs and workshops are

conducted on a routine basis by the department.
