The Townships Project has changed the lives of more than 100,000 people with an investment of about $50 per person

Our goal is to ensure that every South African who needs such a loan has access to it and to ensure that our South African

partners become self-sustaining

Africa is by far the wealthiest continent in mineral resources, and by far the poorest in per capita income

South Africa is the economic driver in southern Africa, and has a substantial impact on the rest of the continent

More than 20 million South Africans (out of 50 million) subsist on less than $2 a day in a country with the most advanced

infrastructure in southern Africa

Loans, starting at about $100, are made without collateral to the poorest and are repaid with interest

In addition, The Townships Project is working with an amazing coalition of universities, NGOs, corporations and

private entrepreneurs who are supporting a new development initiative called

Asset Based Community Development (ABCD)

Asset Based Community Development (ABCD)

stimulates disadvantaged communities to create their own economic plan, and to use that plan to enlist corporate social responsibility funds, micro-finance institutions and micro-

franchising businesses to support their community

This holistic approach to poverty alleviation is breaking new ground, and it offers the potential of vastly improving the

effectiveness of micro-loans

The community development plans often include the sorts of local

businesses that microloans can start or expand and that franchising can support through business systems, branding and training

Micro-franchising is the application of franchising, the most powerful business system ever created, to smaller businesses (costing up to 3x

per capita GDP)

The Townships Project believes this approach will deepen the effectiveness of its support for micro-lending in South Africa

MIEMIE DEBESHANursery School Principal

Herbal Medicine Store Owner

Her desire was to “motivate the children and help them realize that education is the best”. So she found a small building near where she lives with her pensioner husband and invited younger children to come to school for the minimal charges of R30 a month. She gathered some ladies around her to help her teach the twenty five children who came.

In the meantime Miemie had a small business selling herbal medication.

Mrs. Matsebula is also a grandmother who had a small business selling live chickens but it was fraught with difficulties and never did well. In her home she has four adults she cares for plus four small children. There was never enough money coming in to feed her family properly.

She started selling traditional clothes like wraparound skirts, sandals, traditional hats etc. Now with the third loan she is able to have some electricity and more food.
