It is more common in women with the peak incidence at child-bearing and around the menopause. Although overuse has been suggested as a cause, the relationship between occupation and the condition remains controversial. Symptoms Pain at the base of the thumb extending along the wrist. Swelling along the thumb tendons. Pain abducting the thumb, for example with prising a cap off a jar with your thumb. What you can do to help Avoid aggravating activities as much as possible while the inflammation remains. Try using an ice cube to massage the painful point on your wrist for a few minutes, but make sure that it is not too cold or you could get an ice burn.
