A Home for Diggory1. No Home for Diggory
Billy-Jo looked at Diggory sadly. “I’m going to live in Alaska,” she told him, “and I can’t take you with me.”
Diggory looked at Billy-Jo with big, sad eyes.
Billy-Jo hugged Diggory. “don’t worry, Diggory,” she said. “I’m taking you to the dogs’ home. They’ll look after you and find you a new owner.”
At the dogs’ home, Diggory was put with lots of dogs. Kristie gave him a bone and a bowl of water.
Diggory lay down quietly with his head on his paws, and he waited.
A lot of people visited the dogs’ home, but none of them wanted a big dog like Diggory. Weeks went by, and still Diggory waited.
2. The Film Star
One day, a movie star drove up to the dogs’ home in a very expensive car.
“I need a dog to guard my mansion,” he said to Kristie. “I want the biggest dog you have.”
“Diggory is the biggest dog we have,” said Kristie. “But I’m afraid Diggory isn’t - ”
“I’m in a hurry,” interrupted the film star. “I’ll take him!”
Diggory and the movie star drove away.
All the way home, Diggory licked the man on the back of his neck to show how pleased he was. But the movie star didn’t like it. “I want a guard dog, not a washcloth!” he said crossly.
That night, Diggory slept in his new kennel. In the middle of the night, two burglars came into the yard.
“Ow-row-row!” barked Diggory in a friendly voice. He Wagged his tail at the burglars.
“Shhh, doggy,” said one of the burglars. He patted Diggory on his head. Diggory went back into his kennel and back to sleep.
When Diggroy woke up, the yard was full of police officers. “The burglars took everything!” said the movie star in a very loud voice. Then he saw Diggory. “Diggory, you’re hopeless!” he said crossly.
That afternoon, the movie star took Diggory back to the dogs’ home.
“Diggory isn't a guard dog,” he said to Kristie.
“I did try to tell you that,” Kristie replied.
Diggory lay down quietly with his head on his paws, and he waited.
3.Little Miss Spoiled
A few days later, a spoiled girl cam into the dogs’ home with her parents.
“I want a big dog!” she shouted, and she pointed at Diggory.
“He’s too big,” said her mother.
“Our house is too small,” said her father.
The spoiled girl stamped her feet and began to cry.
“Diggory is the biggest dog we have,” said Kristie. “But I’m afraid he’s too – “
“We’re in a hurry,” interrupted the spoiled girl’s parents. “We’ll take him.”
All the way home, Diggory licked the spoiled girl’s hand to show how pleased he was. He licked her ice cream too. That made her cry again.
Diggroy liked his new home. He wagged his tail to show how much he liked it. His wagging tail knocked a vase of flowers off a table.
“Go and lie down!” shouted the spoiled girl’s father. So Diggory lay down in front of the TV.
“I can’t see!” shouted the spoiled girl. She began to cry again, so Diggory ran into the kitchen.
Diggroy found a chocolate cake on the counter. He was just lick the plate clean when he spotted the spoiled girl. “My chocolate cake!” she screamed. “Diggory, you’re hopeless!” she said crossly.
The next day, the spoiled girl and her parents tool Diggory back to the dogs’ home. “This dog is too big for a small house,” said the spoiled girl’s father.
“I did try to tell you that,” Kristie replied.
Diggroy lay down quietly with his head on his paws, and he waited.
4. The Runner
Two days later, a woman came running into the dogs’ home.
“I'm training for a big race,” she said to Kristie. “I need a big dog that will come running with me.”
“Diggory is the biggest dog we have,” said Kristie. “But I'm afraid he can’t –”
“I'm in a hurry,” interrupted the woman. “I'll take him!”
She put Diggory on a leash, and they ran out onto the street. Diggory was very pleased to have a new owner. He ran so fast that she couldn't keep up with him.
But Diggory couldn't run fast for very long. He got slower and slower, and soon the woman was pulling along. “Diggory, you're hopeless!” she said crossly.
She took Diggory back to the dogs’ home. “This dog can’t run very far!” she said to Kristie.
“I did try to tell you that,” Kristie replied.
Diggory lay down quietly with his head on his paws, and he waited.
5.Big Mac
Diggory didn’t have to wait for long. The same day, a very big man came into the dogs’ home.
“My name is Mac,” he said to Kristie. “I’m looking for a very big dog.”
Kristie looked up at the very big man. “Are you sure about that?” she asked.
Mac nodded. “I’m a big, quiet, friendly man, so I need a big, quiet, friendly dog. I drive a big truck all day and sometimes all night. I get lonely, so I want a dog to talk to while I’m driving.”
“Come with me,” said Kristie. “I think I’ve got just what you’re looking for.” She tool Mac to meet Diggory.
Mac put out his hand. “Here, boy,” he said softly.
Diggory went over to Mac and sniffed his hand. Then he stood up on his hind legs and put his paws on Mac’s shoulders.
Mac gave Diggory a hug. Diggory gave Mac a big, wet, friendly lick.
“Diggory, you’re great!” said Mac. “I’ll take him,” he said to Kristie.
Four days later, a big truck drove up to the dogs’ home. “Oh, no!” thought Kristie. “Diggory’s back again.”
But the big truck didn’t stop. Toot, toot! Went the horn. Two big, friendly, happy faces looked out the window at Kristie.
Kristie smiled and waved. “They look just right together,” she said to herself. “A big man and a big dog in a big truck. Perfect!
