Yesterday while driving up the Dolores River Canyon I remembered the day last year while the grandkids were visiting, we spent playing in the river. I had decided to walk across the river to investigate some large boulders with water rushing between them and play in the rushing water. My grandson Julian who’s 7 years old got very excited and shouted over to me asking if he could come across and do what I was doing. I said, “Of

course!”, but asked him to wait for me as the current was swift and the cobble bottom was slick. We started across, Julian, be-ing very independent, did not want any help, but as we got into the current, he got a bit frightened, shouted “Grandpa, grandpa”, and held out his hand. I share with you this story because of how it reminds me of the Gospel story of Jesus, and then Peter, walking on water, Matthew 14:22-33. I imagine Peter, when he saw Jesus walking on the water, reacting the same way Julian did when he saw me on the other side of the river; wow, that’s cool, that looks like fun, can I do that, “Grandpa, can I walk out there with you?” Peter, presumably a very strong and powerful man, a business owner, a man used to giving orders, lets his childlike enthusi-asm for life burst forth. Peter, without a second thought, “got out of the boat and began to walk on the water”. Childlike trust! Both Julian and Peter should have known that they were not being led into danger (alone), but as they were given a little more time to think about what they were doing and the situation that surrounded them, they became frightened, but at that mo-ment reached out their hand. You gotta love Peter. Please take the time to watch the Bible Study about Peter on FORMED.org - Kevin ————————————————————————— Seven- and one-half weeks into the COVID-19 shutdown of our state and our Montelores Catholic Community, I’m sitting hear realizing how much I miss Mass, The Holy Eucharist, and all of you, whom I love. The hugs, the laughter, the stories, the kids, the conversations, and believe it or not, some of the meetings. As of this moment, Thursday, the last day of April, I do not know how things will proceed moving forward, the diocese has not yet given clear direction, but as restrictions around the state are loosened I hope we will soon begin to come together in Christ’s name, in prayer, and in friendship. - Kevin

Friday, May First, we celebrated the Feast of St Joseph the Worker, one of two days set aside to specifically celebrate the life of St Joseph, the other being March 19. I have chosen this day to officially announce my retirement from landscaping. “Jesus, I trust in You” is something I have struggled with on and off for much of my adult life. But why? Christ has never left my side, has nev-er allowed me to “sink”, even when I took my eyes off of Him. For several years now I

have struggled with the idea of quitting landscaping as my body kept telling me it was time, but ego, pride, and fear prevented me from surrendering this part of my life to Christ. Please keep Lin-da, me, and our family in your prayers. Thank you! - Kevin

A Letter from Lonn and Karen Andrews: My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ – Greetings from new ter-ritory.

Just a note to wish you all well, and to update the parish commu-nity on where the Andrews have disappeared to. With the closing of churches as a result of the Coronavirus, so much still goes on within our parish communities, but we lose that close touch we normally would have had by seeing each other on a weekly basis and discussing what is happening in our lives. We will miss those times of talking with you over coffee and donuts after Mass.

Due to health issues, Lonn and I have moved to Laramie, Wyo-ming to be near our youngest daughter and family. We bought a home in Laramie and sold our home in Cortez all within a 30-day period, which was quicker than we thought, so we know God’s hand was in this plan. We are very excited to be near family, but it was hard to leave our parish family behind, especially in a time when you can’t hug everyone and have a good cry to tell every-one how much we love them and will miss them. Our door is always open to you. May God bless all in the Montelores Catho-lic Community, and may you continue to grow in your faith and love of the Lord.

IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surround-ing these creatures informed us that they were—contrary to their popular image—very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large num-bers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flatter-ing one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a profound realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever. SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES May 3 Call Philip the gospel’s “Answer Man.” “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathaniel asked Philip, who had proclaimed Jesus “the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the proph-ets” (John 1:45). Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip their request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Philip’s answer to each question: bring people to Jesus! At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own: “Show us the Father!” (John 14:8). Jesus had three last questions for Philip: “You still don’t know me? How can you ask that? Don’t you believe?” And an answer: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10). Today’s James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for his murderers in Jesus’ words: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Few historical details for either saint, but lessons aplenty: Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James’ letter challenges, “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
