Inresponsetowidespreadrecallsofchildren’sproducts,myofficedebutedtheSafeShop- ping Guide in 2007. In that year alone, 44 million individual units of children’s products wererecalled.Thankfully,thatnumberhasdecreasedsubstantiallyinyearssince,butthenumberofincidents,injuriesanddeathsreportedpriortoproductsbeingrecalledhasrisendramatically.

Sonow,itismoreimportantthaneverforparents,caregiversandlovedonestobevigilantincheckingthesafetyoftoys,clothes,strollersandotherchildren’sproductsbeforepurchasingthem.

Butwithnearly100productsbeingrecalledlastyearalone,itisextremelydifficultforanyfamilytokeepupwithallofthoseitems.Thatiswhywecontinuetoprovidethiseasy-to-useresourceguideforyourholidayshopping,withphotographsanddetaileddescriptionsoftheproductsrecalledbytheU.S.ConsumerProductSafetyCommissionoverthepastyear.

Thisyear,wealsoincludedaspecialsectionfocusedonthesecondhandmarket,whichcontinuestobeamajorconcernforproductsafetyadvocates.InreviewingthesixpreviousyearsofSafeShoppingGuidesmyofficehasproduced,wewantedtodeterminewhetheranyofthepreviouslyrecalleditemscouldstillbefoundforsale.Unfortunately,ourinformalreviewrevealedthatanumberofrecalledproductsareavailableonwell-knownwebsiteslikeeBay,CraigslistandAmazon,indicatingthatsellersmaynotalwaysbeawareofrecallsonitemsthey have posted for sale.

Ourfindingspointtojusthowtoughitistostayontopofthisissuewhenyouhavechildrenathome.Parentsand caregivers must use caution when shopping for young children.
