I'm honored by the trust you have placed in me by electing me as your state president. Many of you knew me as a collegiate. I remember my first state office and the first state board meeting where I discovered that I had to give a report. We were in a room in the Ramada Inn in Jefferson City. I was a little panicked when I discovered I was on the agenda. I scribbled my report out on paper while the meeting was going on and didn't know I needed to copy it for the president and secretary. I learned a lot really fast but all along I have had great mentors and guides. I didn't know where my ESA journey was going, but I've loved every minute of it. I have learned and grown and truly reached so many goals. I've lived in every zone and loved each chapter I've been a member of.

I’ve been continually impressed at how many people this organization has reached throughout the years. When I joined, the Missouri State project was the Missouri Coalition for Battered and Abused Women. We've continued throughout the years to support a variety of organiza-tions like CASA, Missouri Food Pantries, Missouri Girls Town, military groups, Santa Hugs, of course St. Jude and Easter Seals and so many more. ESA has reached, and continues to reach, so many more people than we even know.

I chose my theme carefully, and after a lot of thought—Together we reach the world. Togeth-er, as a chapter, as a city council, as a state, and as an international organization we reach so many more people than any one of us could do alone. We are more together than we are alone. I was talking about my thoughts and ideas with my best friend Amy and she put togeth-er my logo. I couldn't ask for anything more perfect. ESA reaches the world with love and help-ing hands and compassion. There is no beginning and no end, and the circles all join together, working together to make it happen.

This next year I hope we have fun and use our ESA gifts. We have the power to change the world, one person at a time. I want to have fun. I want to learn more. I want to get to know each of you better. These are just a few of my hopes for the upcoming year. I want to see our membership grow. I want to see our membership work together and achieve the great things I know it can. I want to see us reach more and more people every day. I want to get out and do things with each of you. I plan to visit as many chapters as I can this year, and I am challenging the executive board to do the same. Please invite us to your events. We may not be able to make it, that's true, but you never know. One of us might surprise you. We may shake things up. We may do things differently. You know what? That's ok. We want to reach new people so

maybe we have to try new things. Maybe we have to try things we've done before. You never know what's going to touch some-one. Let's get excited.

Working together we will reach the world. We will share the love and mission of ESA. We will make this a better world one day, one person, one event at a time.

I want to thank each of you for what you give to ESA. Thank you for sharing your ESA gifts with the world. Please join us at the planning meeting in June in New Melle, MO. Help be a part of the planning for the upcoming year.

Encourage your chapter to make a weekend of it at Lake of the Ozarks in September. I promise leadership will be a great time and if you stay over, then you'll have some quality relaxation time at the lake with your chapter. What could be better?

I look forward to working with each of you through the year. Have a wonderful summer and keep in touch. Use the facebook group and post updates. I know I love to share in everyone's adventures.

MEET YOUR 2016 – 2017 MISSOURI STATE COUNCIL OFFICERS

Brenda called meeting to order at 8:32am.

IC president, Rickie Brown, will give the Flag Ceremony.

Opening ritual recited.

Opening thought given by Judy Rickett: “Growing Good Corn”- There once was a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. "How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked. "Why sir," said the farmer, "didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn." He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbor's corn also improves. So it is with our lives. Those who choose to live in peace must help their neighbors to live in peace. Those who choose to live well must help others to live well, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all. The lesson for each of us is this: if we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn.

Page 3 M ISS OU RI HAW T HOR NE

Brenda gave us the activity FIND YOUR INNER SUNSHINE.

Welcome from the hotel, Tracy Pendleton.

Yvonne McBride, states counselor, states that the rotation for hosting meetings is out of order. For a few years winter board and convention have been the responsibility of the same zone each year. Yvonne moves that we change the zone now responsible for winter board for 2017, from zone two, to zone three. There by making zone two responsible for 2017 Winter Board meeting. After 2017, beginning in 2018, winter board would then return to rotating from zone one, to zone two, to zone three, as stated by bylaws. This would remedy any one zone having to host two state meetings in one year. Seconded by Claudia Hatton. No dis-cussion. Approved.

Waiting is so difficult! I have not received the names of the ESA Foundation scholarship winners yet. Waiting is so hard, especially when you know some of the applicants as many of you do also. I will have that information for you in the September Hawthorne, but until then just keep your fingers crossed for your student. There will be an exciting & new ESA Foundation fundraiser for the MARC ESA Foundation Scholarship in Minnesota in October. The Friday evening highlight at MARC will be the crowning of Ms. MARC ESA Foundation. Each MARC State will submit a contestant. Voting will be on evening wear, talent and an interview session. The winner will be crowned after tallying votes - each vote is one penny. The candidate raising the most money will receive the coveted crown and the title of Ms. MARC ESA Foundation.

Court Mandrell was selected as the MSC contestant at State Convention in St. Louis in April. Court is a runner who has completed many marathons and a drummer in two bands. He and his spouse, Kim, are very active in the AFS organization and currently are hosting a student. Court and Kim are also the parents of two rescued Greyhounds. Court helps his chap-ter, Sigma Delta, with their events and all local St. Jude events. If that does not qualify Court to receive the coveted crown; he is also handsome, cute and fun to be around! More will follow in the September Hawthorne on how to vote for Court with your pennies and getting them to MARC in Minne-sota. I am setting a goal of 10,000 for MSC! Have a fun and safe summer. As always, June brings with it the Bill

McBride Memorial Horse Race at Fair-

mount Park. It’s always a great time

and a great St. Jude fundraiser for our

chapter.

We will be

off in July

and then

resume

meetings

and socials

in August, kicking off the new year with

a Bunco night. Thank you to our awe-

some new pledge , Jessica Watson, for

also being our social chairman this

year. I’m sure we’re in for lots of

laughs again this year.

Watch for information coming soon

about our annual Painting with a Pur-

pose party at Painting with a Twist in

Winghaven on Sunday, October 2. $45

- Proceeds will once again go to St.

Jude.

Beta Omega had an awesome Spring!

In April, we thoroughly enjoyed spend-

ing an evening playing games and

snacking with our host chapter, Alpha

Omega. In May we installed a new set

of Chapter officers. Thanks so much to

Cookie Ring for a great 2015-2016

year! And welcome Von McBride as

GAMMA ETA

Burnham and Virginia Itschner got a

first hand look as to why we work so

hard on our service projects. We

would highly recommend the trip!

June brings us together for a tour of

Warm Springs Ranch in Boonville, MO,

home of the Budweiser Clydesdales. A

BBQ was hosted at the home of Luann

Corbin following the tour.

The Columbia Gamma Eta Chapter

kicked off their summer socials in May

with a trip to Memphis, TN to take the

official tour of St. Jude’s Children’s Re-

search Hospital. Ann Heidy, Jana Heidy,

It's hard to believe the year went so fast and the convention has come and gone. My Rho Chi sisters really outdid them-

selves...they really know how to put on a convention.

I hope all of you enjoy the summer months and for those of you going to IC...have a wonderful time. I am so sad that I am

missing the fun in Colorado. My summer is being spent recuperating with a new set of knees... I feel as if I have a new lease

on life with a lot of dancing in my future.

Thank you for allowing me to be your President this past year. As a state, we have so much to look forward to, so keep up the

good work finding new members and great opportunities to support our philanthropic ventures.

Remember…

Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine. - Anthony D’Angelo

sound intriguing? The third speaker

will be from Winona State University,

who will speak on “Generational Rela-

tionships”, including younger groups

(Gen XY, & Z). This may give us a clue

on how to attract younger members to

ESA.

There will be other opportunities to

shop as well, right at the conference,

with chapters having Marketplace ta-

bles, a traditional Silent Auction (items

needed if anyone would like to contrib-

ute), and a “live” auction of purses or

wallets filled with gift cards which will

be provided by each MARC state.

For several recent years requests have

been made for members to bring

bottles of their favorite beverages.

These are used for a “Wine Pull” and

the funds will go to the ESAF MARC

scholarships. Anyone wanting to make

a contribution can get their donation

to one of us attending and we will be

happy to deliver.

Of course Saturday will be the installa-

tion of new officers, and this year our

own Angie Butenschoen will become

the president; her theme is “Another

Day. Bring.It.On.” Kim Mandrell is the

current year president, and will preside

over the meetings at this conference.

Come join the celebration and support

our local gals. We ALWAYS have a good

time!

If you need any further information

about the conference you can contact

Carol or me, or check out the ReMARC

newsletter on-line.

If you've NEVER seen the Northern

Lights, make plans to come to the Oc-

tober MARC Conference in Blooming-

ton, MN. I don't know how they will

pull it off, but the theme this year is

“Mystique of the Aurora Borealis”.

Doesn't that peak your curiosity? The

date for this event is 10/7 thru

10/9/16, and if you haven't sent in

your registration IT'S NOT TOO LATE!

Forms are available on line or see Carol

Mayer or myself at our MSC Leader-

ship meeting. Bloomington is also

where the Mall of America is located,

for all you big time shoppers; it's an

experience in itself.

The MARC Conferences are known for

having excellent programs as work-

shops on Friday. This year the plan

includes 3 speakers. One topic is

“Reimagine Your Life”. Another is on

self-hypnosis, and the ability to do this

on/for yourself. Now doesn't that

MSC ESA Sisters,

As discussed and voted on at the MSC Leadership meeting last Fall, we are now charging a $15.00 subscription fee for printed cop-ies of the Hawthorne. I am happy to email, at no charge, a PDF copy of the Hawthorne to anyone who sends back the subscription form with their email address filled in. Additionally, the Hawthorne will still be available to read on the Missouri ESA website. Sub-scriptions will begin with the September issue and continue through the June issue.

Attached below is the subscription form to receive the newsletter by US mail or email. Feel free to make additional copies as nec-essary. Please mail the forms back to me with payment (if required) as soon as possible. The September issue of the Hawthorne should be out by October 15, 2016, and I’ll need to know how many copies print.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as the cost of printing and postage has steadily risen over the last several years.
