Our hearts will still remember,While Bendigo we sing.

    Chorus'Qui patitur vincit'

  • Students Shortlisted for Student of the Year and Miss Florence Anderson Memorial Award

Amelia BAILEYFrom the beginning of the school year, Amelia has taken up just about every opportunity that has been thrown at her. Firstly, she joined the Student Leadership Team where she decided to run for an executive role, and was delighted to be voted into the position of Year 11 Vice President. She found 'family' in the SLT and created a real community of which she is so proud, despite the barriers they facedas part pf Covid-19. As a participant in the Student, Experience, Engagement and Development (SEED) sub-committee, she assisted in the successful implementation of six clubs, one of which she led.

These clubs have created connections between students from differing backgrounds. Amelia is also midway through running the ‘Hope Initiative’ – an idea which she had in the middle of the second lockdown. The aim is to foster connection between students and the elderly by having students create something with a message of hope which is sent to Bethlehem Aged Care and shared among the residents.

She attended the McWhisker Conference (an online conference which is usually held at the Oxford University and the University of Melbourne). Through the conference, they tackled the question “Post COVID-19, which is more important – the environment or the economy?” Whilst she learned a large amount of information from the speakers, Amelia found that the real learning occurred in the syndicate groups with students from all over Victoria.

In the broader community, she volunteers as a Senior Youth Leader at Chosen Youth, where she leads girls in Years 7 and 8 every week. She also volunteers at Vinnies, to combine her love for sustainability with contribution to her community. Last year, as well as travelling to Germany on exchange, she co-led the Bendigo School Strike 4 Climate Rally. She performed in Les Miserables, which is her third consecutive performance with Nexus BYT. In 2018, she had the pleasure of landing a lead role (Mother Abbess) in “The Sound of Music”, which furthered her leadership skills and her appreciation for Bendigo’s vibrant performing arts community. Last year, she also ended a four-year commitment to the Academy of Creative Arts, where she was in the vocals field, having many performance opportunities, both individually and as a team.

She feels privileged to be a part of a community with such inspiring leaders and role models. She has grown to love and appreciate the expression “thinking outside the box” – one which has become even more meaningful this year.

  • Charlie CLARK

Throughout her time at Bendigo Senior Secondary College, Charlie has participated and been involved in many enriching activities that helped to develop herself as an individual and as a member of the Greater Bendigo society. These include public performances, being part of college led groups and initiatives, as well as broader community events led by Yo Bendigo, Freeza, the Bendigo Council and the Bendigo Library.

She has contributed to the College community by representing the school at many events. She has sung and supported herself on guitar at numerous College events, including Wellbeing Week, the VCAL Market Day and Cultural Diversity Week. She has also taken part in formal school events such as singing the New Zealand National Anthem for the College ANZAC Ceremony.

During ParticipACTION Week last year, she performed alongside her friend for ‘BSSC’s Got Talent’. She attended the LGBTI and Friends lunch, where she signed a pledge for equality for all students. She also sang the National Anthem and a song of her choice at the School Sports Victoria Finals held at the Bendigo Stadium.

In 2020, Charlie participated in online events such as the photography competition based on the theme of ‘Growth’, partaking in student surveys and contributing to online sessions and initiatives started by students. She joined the BSSC Environmental Team as part of the leadership committee where they raised awareness for World Environment Day and discussed the benefits to nature as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Last year, she participated in the student forum to discuss ‘What do you want to see Bendigo look like in 2030?’ Year 10 and 11 students were able to voice their opinions on the future of Bendigo to the Bendigo Council and Greater Bendigo Economic Development Strategy Steering Committee. She has a strong professional involvement as she works as a face painter. She is hired and often volunteers at community events such as the Kennington Kinder Fete, Rotary Markets and many more. She was also preparing to take part in the Easter Festival and Parade by setting up a stall but was unable due to the cancellation of the parade.

She has entered regional competitions and showcases such as the Shepparton Young Instrumentalist Competition in 2019 and the RAW Arts Awards in both 2019 and 2020. She also played Cosette in Nexus Youth Theatre’s production of Les Miserables where she attended ongoing rehearsals and performed this at the Bendigo Capital Theatre last year. Charlie has sung and played the piano at the Bendigo Cancer Centre.

Charlie has a great sense of environmental and social responsibility and attended both the Women’s Rights March in Melbourne and the Climate Change Rally in Bendigo. She believes that it is important for every individual to do their part in helping the environment in order to continue and develop in a healthy society.

  • Charlie DAVIS-TOPE

Charlie is a composer and has created a YouTube Channel with the music that he writes along with graphic designs. He has a Facebook page that highlights the music on his channel and has also been learning how to code at home. He has been an ice hockey player and inline hockey player since he was 9 years old. Playing on teams has been valuable in developing his teamwork skills.

Charlie participated in “BSSC’s Got Talent” for two years and won the Audience Choice for the College Musician of the Year 2019 and 2020. Last year, he wrote and performed an original song called “Buried for Australia” which was based on the Black Diggers book. He was intending to perform this song at the ANZAC service this year, which was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19. Luckily, he was able to record the song and it was put on the BSSC Facebook page and YouTube with video footage of black diggers showing behind him. He also collaborated with one of his music teachers to write a string arrangement for this.

He entered some of his music in the RAW Arts Awards and won the Music Performance category earlier this year. Last year, he played with other BSSC students at the Strathfieldsaye Christmas Concert and joined the same group to perform at the Old Church on the Hill for their jazz night.

This year, Charlie joined the Student Leadership Team and was elected the Year 12 Vice President. He regularly attended meetings and contributed to the leadership of the team. He was on College Council as a Student Representative and joined the Education Subcommittee to discuss future learning options for students in 2021.

Over the last two years, Charlie has supported 4 musical groups as a keyboard player including the VET Funk Band. He accompanied a student doing VCE Music Investigations and another completing VCE Music Performance. He participated in an activity that was set up at BSSC to help Chinese students feel less isolated at the school.

Charlie has a part-time job at Sim’R Café as a waiter, cashier and kitchen hand. Through this, he has learned a lot about interacting with the public and working under pressure. He has also been a coach for inline hockey in Bendigo for several years. Furthermore, he runs bench coaching and ran weekly training sessions for players with other coaches.

He was on the South Australian Championship Tange Team which won the National Championships in Melbourne. He was invited to join the Melbourne Ice Hockey Junior team, and played for the Saints Ice Hockey team.

Charlie is a strong and respectful leader and is supportive, positive and encouraging.

  • Dooley EVERY

Dooley enjoyed being a part of the Student Leadership Team in Year 11 and served as President in 2020. Over the summer break, he attended the Lord Somer’s Leadership Big Camp. To prepare for the role as President, Dooley attended the Inclusion Ambassador training day and the BSSC’s Leadership Development workshop that was hosted by the City of Greater Bendigo.

As President, Dooley oversaw the four SLT subcommittees: Inclusion and Wellbeing, Events, Student Experience and Communications. He worked closely with the executive team to ensure a unified approach to SLT policy. With the survey data in mind, the SLT started working on a reformed formal and several new special interest clubs. As President, Dooley was actively engaged in the school community and was honoured and grateful to represent BSSC. For example, he supported programs such as Harmony Week, the Life Skill Program and IDAHOBIT International Day. He was also a member of the BSSC Environmental Sustainability Group and participated in Environmental Week.

Dooley continued to run the SLT program throughout the first lockdown and helped come up with fun isolation activities like cooking and photography competitions. Upon returning to on-site learning, he initiated and led student DIY mask making. The idea was that the school’s sewing resources could be used and that masks could be made for any student who needed/wanted them. During the second lockdown, Dooley encouraged the team to run a successful photography competition, a school wide Kahoot and a poetry competition.

Apart from that, Dooley participated in the Lions Youth of the Year competition where he won the Club Final Public Speaking award and spoke about the importance of student engagement in student governance – an issue that is close to his heart. He was also a guest on Phoenix FM’s “Old and Beautiful Program” where he, alongside the other SLT executives, were interviewed about their roles in the SLT. He also did a media bite and was a speaker for the 2020 graduation. In the college community, Dooley was a student helper for the BSSC Information Night.

Dooley placed a submission in the RAW Arts Competition with pieces on the Vietnam War that he made with friends over the summer break. He also entered the Bond University Film and Television Award (BUFTA) and FLICKER UP which was the youth and high schools category for Flicker Fest’s Short Film Festival. He worked at the Bendigo Community Radio KLFM for two weeks, where he did work experience in Year 10. At KLFM, he assisted with the preparation of the daily news bulletins, weather reports and helped monitor the Vic Emergency App. Finally, Dooley participated in the Australia Day community breakfast and the flag raising ceremony as well as Clean Up Australia Day. At the start of this year, he began volunteering with the CFA after the horrors of the summer bushfires.

  • Esta FOUNTAIN

Community engagement has looked considerably different this year, but throughout it all, Esta has pushed herself to find alternative paths for engaging and driving change in areas she is passionate about. Continuing from last year, she signed up to be an Inclusion Ambassador to support and get to know BSSC’s diverse student body. She was also very excited to be involved with the newly formed environmental group who organised the bread tag and plastic lids collection competition. She also cleans up rubbish around the College when she can and personally manages a recycling system in the Language Centre communal kitchen space. She took part in Plastic Free July where she completed challenges and promoted plastic free alternatives to single use items on social media. She attended the online strike against the government’s investments in gas.

In response to the changing school environment, Esta was fortunate to be selected for the High Achievers group who met online. She completed the College-organised student exchange in France over the 2020-new year period where she experienced life as a French student. Upon returning to Australia, her host sister lived with Esta and her family for five weeks.

Outside of school, she has a part-time job where she assists the small business “Eco-Success” that drives for positive change in the community. She has worked on projects such as “Outside the Square” which facilitate conversations around celebrating local people that create positive change. She has also assisted the “Make a Change” project that builds skills for people bringing about positive change and the “Stay Social” program, with a focus on collaboration between guests in accommodation. During the lockdown, Esta has engaged online with social justice issues through webinars like the Intersectional feminist led COVID recovery forum, donating to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) and signing petitions that impact government policy.

She has donated funds to the Annie North Women’s Refuge in Bendigo by making and selling handmade masks. She donated 30 hand-made masks to the refuge for workers to wear instead of single-use masks. She has also collected and donated warm clothes to the refuge during winter for women fleeing violence. Furthermore, Esta has recently started volunteering at a Vinnies Op-Shop where she helps organise stock and sell items.

Esta is a person that likes to lead from amongst a group of people and include them in the process instead of standing out the front by herself. She finds that building connection and respect amongst her peers and leading by example is the most effective method. Her recent dance leadership role has given her the pleasure of seeing people’s personal growth in their dance abilities.

She is grateful for the opportunities that BSSC has given her over the last two years and hopes to take those experiences and skills into her future.

  • Mitchell GRAHAM

Over the last two years as a student at Bendigo Senior Secondary College, Mitch has been involved in a wide range of activities that have made a positive contribution to the life of the College and to his leadership development. He has been an active member of the Student Leadership Team, where he carried out a range of roles and was one of the student representatives on School Council. Through these roles, Mitch was able to provide student voice in relation to whole college decisions.

Mitch was involved in a leadership-training day through the SLT, and as a result became a member of the communications team. He was responsible for communicating relevant events and activities to the students by making posters for events such as Wellbeing Week. He also spoke at graduation on behalf of all students to thank the parents of Year 12 students. Being on the School Council required him to represent students on issues around the college and present the Student Leadership Report on behalf of the SLT.

Outside the College, Mitch is on a committee called “Empowering Eaglehawk” which is a community enterprise which distributes funds throughout the 3556 local community. He has been on this committee since the start of 2018. Throughout his 3 years on the committee, he has moved from being a junior member to now being a youth representative. This involves being a voice for the youth of Eaglehawk and giving input into what the youth of Eaglehawk want to see around their community. He is also a member of the marketing committee that promotes the work of “Empowering Eaglehawk” and upcoming events in the 3556 area. Mitch also helps with community events such as grants evenings, community awards and community events.

This year, Mitch has helped out with a junior cricket team at Eaglehawk where he taught children how to bowl, bat and improve their game of cricket. He is also a member of the Junior Badminton team at the Bendigo Eaglehawk Badminton Association. He helps run Friday night games by preparing draws, scoring and motivating the children to do their best. Mitch coaches Junior badminton on a Tuesday night and helps the head coach. He is a part of the association’s senior committee which involves giving an update on how the juniors are going. During the winter, he is a handicapper at the local cross country club and he times and handicaps runners.

Mitch is very passionate about the community and enjoys the leadership roles he has undertaken. He is supportive of others and encourages people to bring different and diverse ideas. During his studies, his work experience at local schools helped him continue to develop, not only as a leader but as a coach. This has contributed to his coaching development and enabled him to transfer these skills to coaching in cricket and badminton.

  • Emily GUNDRY

Emily has loved her time at this school and is proud to be a student here. One of the ways that she has given back to the school is through her academic endeavours. Her commitment to education is something that she has prided herself on and you can find her in the language centre making headway on her studies every morning.

Emily has been involved in the Student Leadership Team, although COVID-19 has certainly made her experience very different. In her sub-committee of Wellbeing and Inclusion, her personal goal was to place acknowledgements of country in every single classroom to better educate students about our lands’ history and make an active effort to acknowledge this. Her goal to do this existed after conversations with other students who were unaware of the importance of expressing these acknowledgements as more than just a scripted message to tick a box.

She is also proud to be an Inclusion and Wellbeing ambassador and an LGBTQIA+ ambassador to help increase inclusion and support for all students with diverse backgrounds within our school community. This is something that she feels truly passionate about which has led her to be involved in the local Headspace Reference Group, as well as holding a part time job.

However, her proudest achievement this year is her role as the Chair of the Student Executive Advisory Committee at the Victorian Student Representative Council (VicSRC). Although this isn’t something directly done through the college, her contribution to the organisation has had an effect on schools across the state. With all the changes occurring this year, the VicSRC’s influence had never been more crucial. Emily led executive team in transferring their meetings online, and through this, learnt how to better facilitate and run a team. Online meetings increased her interpersonal and communication skills. Some of the work that she has done includes being present at VicSRC’s regular meetings with the Minister for Education, other deputy secretaries and being invited to contribute to guiding coalition meetings.

Emily has also helped create and advocate for VicSRC’s “Reflections of Remote Learning” report which was used by the DET as a guide to better assist the students’ experience of learning at home. She was also a part of a “Real-Life Skills” working committee that works to improve accessible resources to students in this field. She facilitated and ran a 4 day Congress during the September holidays where her group focussed on re-evaluating and changing aspects of the VCE and ATAR scoring system. She has been featured in the Herald Sun and the Age multiple times, been invited to speak on the ABC Radio, was featured twice on the ABC 7 o’clock news and had a large feature on Channel Ten’s “The Project” where she spoke about her experience and the ATAR. These moments have been very proud moments and she considered them as opportunities to represent student voice and experience as a whole.
