Vestry Person of the Month

April 2017 WELCOME BARBARA WARD

Barbara has been a grateful member of the St. Andrew’s community for almost 20 years! Being a member has afforded her the opportunity to travel on mission with the youth, to be involved in meaningful work through Outreach, and to have made many wonderful friends along the way. She is the obnoxiously proud mother of three sons.

CHURCH SCHOOL Another busy month is upon us. The church school will be holding a Lemonade and Baked Goods Sale during Coffee Hour, on April 2, to raise funds in support of Family Promise. April 9 is Palm Sunday, with pony rides during the church school time before the service at 10:00 a.m., and the Parade of Palms around the block, with a student riding a pony in the lead as Jesus. Our family-friendly Maundy Thursday dinner will be at 6:00 p.m. and include the interactive Last Supper and foot-washing. A children's Stations of the Cross will be at 4:00 p.m. on Good Friday. There will be an Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m., with bluegrass music. Easter Sunday services will be at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., on April 16, with an Easter Egg hunt following the 10 am service. On April 23, we celebrate New Life Sunday. There will be childcare each Sunday morning, but no church school classes on Easter Sunday. We respectfully request snack donations of large bottles of water, 48-oz. bottles of apple juice, Pirates' Booty, Nilla Wafers, and Saltines. Thank you for your support.

OUTMETROWEST TRIVIA NIGHT, APRIL 8. OutMetrowest, an organization that supports LGBTQ youth in our area, is holding its annual trivia night and silent auction on Saturday, April 8th at 6pm. A team from St. Andrew's participated last year and had a great time! Want to join this year? Allison Smith is the team captain and you can contact her at [email protected].

AMAZON ASSOCIATES PROGRAM If you shop at Amazon, you can support St. Andrew's at the same time. Through the Amazon Associates program, all you have to do is click on the Amazon link on our website to get to Amazon.com. A portion of your purchase will be donated directly to St. Andrew's (note that this is different from the Amazon Smiles program). Just go to standrewsframma.org, click on support/donate, and follow the link to Amazon. Thanks, and happy shopping!

CALLING ALL GRADUATES! Are you or is someone in your household graduating this spring? If you are graduating from high school, college, or getting any kind of degree, please let Lauren in the office know so we can honor you on May 21st. Send your name and the name of your school to [email protected] by April 23.

THE MAUNDY THURSDAY WATCH Then Jesus came with them to a small estate called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Stay here while I go over there to pray”. He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And sadness came over him, and great distress. Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and keep awake with me.” And going a little further he fell on his face and prayed, “My Father”, he said, “If it is possible, let this cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.” He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “So you had not the strength to keep awake with me one hour?”

Matthew 26: 36-41 TJB On Maundy Thursday, April 13, following the 7:30 p.m. Evening Service and Foot-washing, you are cordially invited to spend one hour “awake” with Christ throughout the night. The chapel in the darkened Church Nave will be transformed into a garden for prayer, meditation, and quiet contemplation, but you may sit or move about wherever you are most comfortable. There is a sign-up sheet on the Adult Ed bulletin board near Harris Hall, and you may choose an hour or more from 9:00 p.m. through to 7:00 a.m. Good Friday morning.

NEW SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY SETS MEETING SCHEDULE

The newly-formed Social Justice Ministry will meet the first Monday of the month, beginning April 3. Meetings will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Library. All are welcome to join!

FELLOWSHIP Please wear your name tag.

As our Episcopal and Lutheran congregations get to know each other, let us continue our practice of wearing name tags at Coffee Hour. If you don’t have a name tag, please add your name to the list of name tags to be made. They will be added to the tag rack each week.

OUTREACH REPORT St. Andrew’s and Lutheran Church of Framingham are partnering in Outreach Ministry. The Outreach Committee meets the second Sunday of each month in the Library at 9:00 a.m. The next meeting is April 9, and all are invited to participate. We’ll be discussing the meaning of Outreach, as well as providing updates on activities.

RECENT ACTIVITIES Thank you to everyone who so generously contributed to the sock and diaper collections. Feet Need Socks: 805 pairs of socks were donated, which were blessed for donation to Common Cathedral, Boston. Thank you to Barbara W. for volunteering to deliver the socks to Common Cathedral. Diaper Collection at Stop & Shop, Natick to benefit the Diaper Project at A Place to Turn: 5,703 diapers and 59 packages of diaper wipes were collected at St. Andrew’s and Stop & Shop, Natick. Thank you to all who generously gave diapers, wipes, monetary donations, and their time in support of this ministry. Joanne Barry, Director of A Place to Turn, was very appreciative of our efforts and generosity and she told us how much the diapers mean to the families who receive them.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES Family Promise MetroWest Walk: A team of walkers from St. Andrew’s and Lutheran Church of Framingham will participate in the walk on Saturday, April 8. Between now and then, we are collecting monetary donations for this event. You can place your donations in the appropriate box on the table in the Memorial Room following worship each Sunday. There is a fun, yet “very serious” competition to see which side of the sanctuary contributes more. So, please place your donation in the box for the side of the sanctuary in which you sit. You may also join the St. Andrew’s/LCF team and walk the 3-mile route. Registration Fees are $20 for adults, $10 ages 5-17, 4 years and younger are free. Register at http://walk.familypromisemetrowest.org/StAndrewsLCF, scroll to the bottom right and click on Join our Team! The website will ask you to complete your

personal information to join the St. Andrews, Framingham & Lutheran Church of Framingham team. For more information, contact Laura Woollett at LAWoollett@hotmailcom Lutheran World Relief Personal Care Kit Collection: During the month of April, we will be collecting the following items to be made into personal care kits: • Lightweight bath-size towels (between 20”x40”

and 52”x27”), dark colors recommended • Bath-size bars of soap, any brand, in original

wrapping • Adult-size toothbrushes in original packaging • Sturdy combs (no picks or fine-toothed combs) • Metal nail clippers (attached file optional) Each kit will contain 1 towel, 2 or 3 bars of soap, 1 toothbrush, 1 sturdy comb, and 1 nail clipper. Please bring your items to be donated to church during April. There will be boxes in the Memorial Room. We will deliver our kits to Christ Lutheran Church on May 18, to be packed and shipped to their destinations. If you would be interested in volunteering to load the truck at Christ Lutheran Church on May 18, between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., please contact Carol Esbig at [email protected]. More information about Lutheran World Relief and Personal Care Kits may be obtained at https://lwr.org/get-involved/build-kits-of-care/personal-care-kits

In addition to the food donations, volunteers are welcomed, Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Salvation Army Miracle Kitchen: St. Andrew’s and LCF members prepare and serve a delicious and nutritious meal the third Friday of each month at 4:30 p.m. Volunteers are always appreciated. DEACON’S MESSAGE APRIL 2017

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,

but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. —1 Cor 1:18

Grace and peace to you! It is rather ironic that the main symbol of the Christian faith - the cross - is also a symbol of humiliation, violence, suffering, and death. And, yet, it is through the cross that we come to understand that Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior was sent into the world to fully share in our humanity and to lead us back into a right relationship with God. Through the cross, we experience Jesus’ own vulnerability and brokenness; we see his own body given for the sake of the world. Through the cross, we see good overcoming evil; life conquering death; freedom given to those who believe. Through the cross, we come to realize that God is present with us even - especially - in the midst of our deepest suffering and death. At those moments when we are most weak and vulnerable and broken, God comes to us, revealing God’s glory with love and compassion. Martin Luther called this paradox of God bringing life from death through an act of torture the ‘theology of the cross’. It implies God works in hidden ways and in unexpected places; God’s grace and love come when least expected. Many may view it as foolishness - the idea that an all-powerful God suffered and died on a cross in solidarity with God’s people, as the way of expressing love and forgiveness and hope. Many may think that God’s power is revealed most fully in the wealth and prosperity and prestige that can come from living in an affluent society. Many might like to skip the cross and head straight for the resurrection. Do not be fooled. Jesus was drawn to vulnerable people on the margins of society - women, people with disabilities, children, foreigners, outcasts. They were among the first to recognize him as the Messiah. So, it continues to be today. God continues to work among God’s people in a similar way - bringing healing and hope to the meek and lowly through grace alone. As we approach Holy Week, I encourage you to walk gently and intentionally toward the cross. Linger during The Three Days of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday and ponder the hidden mystery that suffering and death lead to life everlasting. Then, rise and rejoice in the new life that you have been given through the cross. to God be the glory! Susan
