Standards

The Core Music Standards are all about Music Literacy. The standards emphasize conceptual understanding in areas that reflect the actual processes in which musicians engage. The standards cultivate a student’s ability to carry out the three Artistic Processes* of

Creating, Performing, and Responding.

These are the processes that musicians have followed for generations, even as they connect through music to their selves and their societies. And isn’t competence in Creating, Performing, and Responding what we really want for our students?Students need to have experience in creating, to be successful musicians and to be successful 21st century citizens. Students need to perform – as singers, as instrumentalists, and in their lives and careers. Students need to respond to music, as well as to their culture, their community, and their colleagues. The new standards provide teachers with frameworks that closely match the unique goals of their specialized classes. The standards are presented in a grade-by-grade sequence from pre-K through grade 8, and discrete strands address common high-school music classes, such as Ensembles and Music Composition/Theory. The standards are provided in “strands” that represent the principal ways music instruction is delivered in the United States.

Welcome to the Springer Middle School Band Program!!!

A Tradition of ExcellenceDear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the Springer Middle School Band program. We are excited to have you as a part of our program this year!

Please take some time to read over the Band Handbook. This will prepare you for your work and responsibilities as a member of the Band. If a problem should arise, consult the handbook first. If you still cannot find the answer, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Students that take part in the Band program at Springer are challenged to grow musically and encouraged to achieve their highest potential. In order for this to occur, students must respect their director, their fellow musicians, their instruments, the music they perform, any guests, and all of the work that each person puts into the Band.

If you follow the rules as laid out in this handbook, your reward will be like nothing you have experienced before. You will feel pride, a sense of accomplishment, self-satisfaction, and FUN!!!!

I can’t wait to work and grow with you. Let’s have a fantastic year!

Sincerely,Robert J. BaronioDirector of Bands Springer Middle School(302)[email protected]

Class Descriptions6 th Grade Concert Band I am thrilled and look forward to be working with our 6th grade musicians. The part for all of you that is most exciting is that you now have band as its own class throughout the school year. With this new educational opportunity, we are going to be able to move you along as young musicians at a faster pace and this schedule allows for us to cover more material. I would like to begin the first marking period with everyone having the Standard of Excellence Books I (Red) and II (Blue). We will be working together with these two books as well as learning your major scales, how to watch the conductor, listening skills, sight-reading, and much more. I can’t wait! The 6th grade band will have three required performances during the school year. They are the Winter and Spring Concerts and a performance at the Trills and Thrills Festival in Hershey, Pa.You will receive a grade for this class. Give your best, honest effort and you will do fine. Please refer to the grading policy page of the handbook.

7 th Grade Concert Band and 8 th Grade Symphonic Band These two ensembles are two full-sized concert bands at Springer. Both classes meet as their own class throughout the school year. No more pull outs from other classes to go to band! Students for these two classes receive a grade as is with any class (A to an F). Give your best effort and you will do fine, you will improve, and you will enjoy making music. The 7th Grade Concert Band learns, rehearses, and performs Grade 2 to 2 ½ to 3 band literature while the 8th Grade Symphonic Band learns, rehearses, and performs Grade 3-4 band literature. Both ensembles give three required performances during the school year which are part of the music curriculum. Please see the grading policy sheet and marking period playing requirements as to how the student’s grades are determined for these classes.

Beginning Band ClassThis is a class that meets EVERY marking period for the entire school year. This class is an opportunity for you to still be involved with learning an instrument and being in the band. You would be a good match for Beginning Band Class if:

You started in 4th or 5th Grade but quit and would like to start again      You started this past school year and feel as if you are not ready for the concert band.      You quit because you did not enjoy the instrument you were playing or you were not

having success with that particular instrument and would like to try a new instrument.      You quit because you missed a lot of lessons due to holidays, sick from school, tests,

field trips, DCAS, etc. and you fell behind in learning your instrument. This class is designed to give every student an opportunity to catch up or learn on an instrument that is the best fit for them. The only instrument(s) that we do not start in Beginning Band Class at Springer is the percussion (drums). The goal for all of our Beg. Band students is to be performing with one of our three concert bands by the spring semester.

SPRINGER JAZZ Springer Jazz Ensemble is available only to students who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, flute, piano, guitar, bass guitar, and drum set. Auditions will be held in the middle of September. NEW The Jazz Ensemble meets every Wednesday and Friday after school. While we do work around students attending tryouts for school sports and other activities, attendance is mandatory and students are subject to removal from the group for missed attendance. The focus is to introduce students to the basic techniques for the Jazz idiom. Students will have an opportunity to study the Jazz and American musical history as well as the art of improvisation. The Springer Jazz Ensemble will give several performances during the school year which will include the Winter and Spring Concerts, and the IAJE Jazz Festival at the University of Delaware. This ensemble will be for our more experienced players in grades 6-8.Students interested in auditioning for the jazz should see Mr. Baronio for audition materials.

Springer Band Classroom Rules1. Be On Time to Class! – Students should be in the band room by the bell and in their seat with their instrument three minutes after the bell rings.

2. Get Rid of the Gum! – No food, drink, gum, or candy is allowed in the band room at any time.

3. Bring Your Stuff! – Students must bring their instrument, their music, and a pencil to class every day.

4. Take Care of Your Stuff! – Students are held responsible for cleaning up after themselves and putting their equipment away at the end of every rehearsal.

5. Respect Your Teacher! – Please respect your teacher by not talking during rehearsals. If you have a question, please raise your hand and wait to be recognized.

6. Respect Your Classmates! – Show respect to your band members at all times.

7. Respect Our Equipment! – Your instrument is for you to play, and only you.  Instruments are extremely expensive, so students should never play each other’s instruments.  In addition, only percussionists should ever play the percussion instruments in the band room!

8. Turn in Homework! – The year-long homework assignment of all SMS Band Students is the Practice Record. Make sure you turn it in every week in order to receive full points.

9. Be Ready and Willing! – When you walk into the band room, you should always be Ready to Work and Willing to Learn. I won’t ask for perfection, but I will insist that you do your best!

10. Have Fun! – Being a part of band should be a fun experience for all students. If you try your best to meet the first 9 expectations, I’m certain this last one will happen all by itself.

Springer Bands Grading Policy It is important to remember that Band is, in fact, a “real class” and a full year commitment. Students will have to earn grades, and the grades do count towards the honor roll, honor society, etc.

Students will receive progress reports in the middle of each marking period. I may send home an additional e-mail with my added observations as to how your child is doing in band. I would like to encourage time for the parents and students to assess the student’s practice habits and perhaps set new goals where needed. The main focus of the Springer Band Program is to provide the student with the opportunity to succeed. With this in mind, the following grading system will be used to evaluate students in the band program. The student’s grade is based on 100%, divided differently depending on whether or not there is a performance during the marking period.

Grading for marking periods with a performance (2nd and 4th)40% - Rehearsal Skills25% - Practice Charts10% - Tests25% - Performance Participation

Grading for marking periods without a performance (1st and 3rd)50% - Rehearsal Skills25% - Practice Charts25% - Tests

It is important to note that the students are not graded in comparison to other students in the class or throughout the Springer music program. The main area for success for each and every student is in giving their best effort during each and every class and with practicing at home.

Practice Charts (4 weeks)Students are required to hand in a practice sheet for four of the nine weeks in a marking period

Practice time is recorded on the practice sheets provided by Mr. Baronio.Practice sheets are to be filled out, signed by the parents, and handed in to

Mr. Baronio on the first school day of the week.Grades are determined by the consistency of practice, not the total amount of

minutes practiced in a week.It is more valuable to practice 10-15 minutes every day (about one hour a

week) than to practice one day a week for an hour. The five weeks of practice sheets in a marking period allows for a student to

skip a week if they are sick, on vacation, or their instrument is being repaired.

Failure to fill out the practice record will result in a zero grade. You will be receiving “helpful hints” this school year in effective ways to help your child practice at home. The more practice time = advancement of skills = enjoyment in music.

Being prepared with their instrument and materials (valve oil, slide grease, reeds).

FluteCleaning rod and cloth *

Oboe/BassoonCleaning rod, swab *3 good reeds at all times *Cork grease *Reed caseWater container (can be a small cup)

Clarinet4 good reeds at all times! Number the reeds and alternate them each time you play your clarinet. This will help each reed last longer which will help you develop a stronger embouchure and greater tone quality. Mitchell Lurie or Van Doren reeds are recommended with a reed strength of 3 or 3 ½ *

Cleaning swab *Cork grease *Advanced clarinet players should use a good quality mouthpiece and ligature. We recommend Pyne Polycrystal or Van Doren 5RV Lyre mouthpiece with either a Bonade inverted ligature of a Rovner “regular” ligature.

Saxophone4 good reeds at all times! Number the reeds and alternate them each time you play your clarinet. This will help each reed last longer which will help you develop a stronger embouchure and greater tone quality. We recommend La Voz strength medium, Van Doren strength 3 or 3 ½ size reeds. *Dependable neck strap *Cork grease *Cloth cleaning swab (for the body of the sax) *Advanced Saxophone players should use a good quality mouthpiece and ligature. We recommend a Selmer S90 mouthpiece and a Rovner “regular” ligature.

All Brass InstrumentsValve Oil (Rotary oil for French Horn and Slide Oil for the Trombone). *Tuning Slide Grease *Advanced trumpet and trombone players should look into purchasing their own straight mute.

PercussionDrum Pad with an adjustable stand2 pair of Vic Firth SD-1 snare drum sticks. Be careful that the stick tips for any of your sticks be free of chips and defects that will cause damage to the snare drum heads.

School Owned InstrumentsSome instruments are very expensive to purchase and, therefore, are available through a check out procedure from our school. These instruments include: bassoon, bass clarinet, tenor sax, bari sax, French horn, baritone horn, trombone, and tuba. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of these instruments available. However, there are usually enough to accommodate all of the students needing them. Springer Middle School provides percussion instruments for all three of our concert bands and both jazz bands. In order to be issued a school owned instrument, the parent and student must sign an instrument check out form acknowledging that they take full responsibility for the instrument. There is a yearly usage fee for using school owned instruments of $45. This fee covers cleaning and minor repairs to the instrument.

A student who owns or is leasing his/her instrument should assume the same responsibility and precaution as one with a school owned instrument.

No student should use anyone else’s instrument except when given permission by the director (this includes non-percussionists using percussion instruments).

Be sure to have a written record at home of the make, serial number, and finish of your instrument. This information is necessary if the instrument be lost or stolen.

Keep your instrument in good working condition at all times – inside and out!

Why take private music lessons?

Speed up your learning curve, slow down your frustration

When you first start with music, it will most likely be a bit odd to you. That's ok. It’s normal. It takes some time to learn to read music, understand the fundamentals and mentally digest why notes, chords, and songs sound good together.

Working with a private instructor helps you quickly understand the fundamentals while making learning fun. You will learn faster, which helps build your confidence and increases the likelihood of you continuing with your lessons.

The first step is the hardest

With music, there's a phenomenon called the "First Month Hump". During the first month, you're at an important stage that determines whether you keep going or whether you call it quits. Everything is new. Some things make

sense—other things do not. And inside, you're trying to decide whether the dream of making music is worth the fear of failing at it.

It's at this stage where private instruction really starts to make a difference. With the help of a good program and instruction, you see more improvement, which helps build your confidence and increases the likelihood of continuing. Your lessons are customized around you, so you get to learn the things you're most interested in. This naturally speeds up your learning curve as well. You also have personalized attention that helps you fast-track through the First Month Hump and into the next phase of learning.

On the reverse side of this page is a list of very talented private music teachers in the Wilmington area. Private lessons sometimes are easier to fit in the family schedule for the entire year, just the school year, and sometimes only in the summer.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I try to keep the list as updated as possible but there are instances where the list of people who teach at Accent Music and the Wilmington Music School change.

Festivals and Field Trips

The Symphonic Band/Chorale/Springer Jazz plans for national music festival is in the works. More information will come out as

soon as possible. This year we have received invitations for festivals in Toronto, Canada and Virginia Beach. We want to send

you as much information as possible before accepting such an exciting invitation. The number one item will be the cost. We

hope to be able to keep this trip to no more than $700 which will include festival fees, hotel, charter buses, and most meals. A payment schedule would be set up throughout the school year

and fundraising opportunities are already in the works.

The Trills and Thrills Music Festival will be scheduled for the end of May. This is when we compete with other regional schools

and are evaluated by a panel of music adjudicators from established colleges and universities. The 6th Grade Concert Band and Choir will be headed to Hershey, Pennsylvania and the 7th/8th

Grade Bands and Choirs traveling to Hershey and Hershey Park! The cost of this festival trip is $105 which includes: festival fees,

charter bus, Springer park t-shirt and park ticket.

A student’s privilege to attend any festival may be revoked for one of more of the following reasons:

Failure to attend required concerts Failure to return permission slip

Exhibiting behaviors that do not exemplify the principles of BARK

Repeated violations to the Brandywine School District Code of Conduct and/or the Springer Student

Handbook Academic standing in band and all classes An out of school suspension from school

Attending these trips is a privilege and you (student) are representing the school, our program, yourself, and the community. Inacceptable behavior will not be accepted on or prior to the trips. Trips that involve a cost may not be refunded within 60 days of the trip.

Practice Tips

1. Arrange a regular practice time and make sure that it is followed. This is the most important thing you can do to help your child.

2. Keep a record of the brand name and serial number of your child’s instrument.

3. Identify the instrument case with your child’s name.4. Realize that most students do not practice on their

own. They usually need to be reminded.5. Students should practice in a room with good lighting

and a music stand.6. Turn off the TV and try to avoid siblings in the room

to avoid distractions.7. Show an interest and be enthusiastic in your child’s

practice. Take time to listen or arrange family recitals (concerts). Be creative.

8. Never make fun of not-so-musical sounds that your child may produce.

9. Help your child to remember his/her instrument, music, and supplies to school every day.
