Have you noticed that the wordsfasting, silence and prayer are seldomused these days? Yet people in Biblical times seemed very familiar with them.Thedisciplesintercededwithfastingandprayer. My husband liked the challenge ofsaving hospitals. These were usuallybankrupt mission hospitals in the farcorners of the earth. In other words:smallhospitalsinforeigncountries. Boredwithretirement, hewenttotheexecutivephysician inchargeofmissionhospitals and asked, “Givemeyourworsthospital!” The doctor said one word, “Nuzvid.” And that sealed our fate for the nextthree years. My job was to find a place where IcouldsupportthismissioninIndia. Nuzvid Mission Hospital was locatedin the hottest countryside of easternIndia.Itwasalsotheareawherethebestmangoesweregrown.Toget toNuzvid,we had to get the train in the rainyseason and then travel by car throughheavymangoorchards.Later, welearnedthat ours was the last train to our inland area, as the trackswere toofloodedbytheheavymonsoonrainstotravelsafely. The hospital supports a smallschool of nursing. Since Iwas a schoolcounselor, the principals found a smallofficeformetoopenforstudents’visits. What surprised me was that my firstclients were the school principal and the school’sviceprincipal.IalsofoundthattheIndianstudents’problemswereverysimilartostudentproblemshereintheUSA,i.e.friendshipsanddisagreementswithparents. Iwasabletoteachsomeclasses on introductory subjects such

aspsychology. During this time, the chaplain of thehospital resigned to locate to anotherarea.Iwasaskedtobeassistantchaplainuntilanotheronewasfound. Each morning, I prayed that I couldbringspiritualhelptosomeonethatday. On one of the hottest afternoons, Idecided to walk through the hospitalto avoid the blazing sun. I passed theemergency room where a womanstopped me and spoke in the locallanguage. SinceIdidn’tunderstandher,Ibrushedheroffandcontinuedwalkingoutofthebuilding. The sun beat down, but that wasn’t botheringme.Myconsciencetoldme, “Didn’tyoupray thismorning tohelpsomeone today? You go right back inthereandhelpthatladynow!” I obeyed. I returned hoping that thewomanwas still there. Shewas. At justthatmoment, amalenursecameoutoftheemergencyroom. I asked him to translate for me theneedsofthiswoman.

My sister, Cora, and her husband, Gary, fromMissouriplannedtostaywithmeatmyhomeinBuenaPark,Californiafortheholidays. They had planned to be here for twoweeksandwerelookingforwardtoahappycelebrationwiththefamily. At the breakfast table, Gary led a short devotion and prayer. This included aremindernottobefearfulbecauseGodis with us. Oneofmygreatestpersonalfearswastobediagnosedwithcancer–specificallybreast cancer. As recommended, afterturning forty, I scheduled my firstmammogram. Afterinitialscreeningthefilmsneededtoimmediatelyberepeatedandagainbereviewedbytheradiologist. When this was completed, I wasinstructed to call my Primary CarePhysicianafterIreturnedhome. Iwasfilledwithfear.Itseemedthatoneof my worst nightmares was unfolding.MyPCPinformedmeImustconsultwithasurgeon. As soon as possible, I followedthrough with a surgical consult. It wasdeterminedthatsincetherewasnolumpor anything suspicious, I must have aNeedleLocalizationwithaFrozenSectionperformed. On the day of surgery, I first had tohave a large needle inserted during amammogram into the precise area ofconcern. The needle was then taped into place.Whenthisfrighteningandpainfulprocedure was completed, I awaitedsurgery. Duringsurgery, themicrocalcificationareaof concern, which surrounding thetipoftheneedle, wasremoved. Onceconfirmedthattheentireareaofconcern(whichsurroundedthetipoftheneedle)wasremoved itwassenttothelab.IwasthentakentoRecovery. I had to wait three days for thediagnosis to be made whether I hadcancer or not. I was terrified as I faced one of mydeepest fears. The Great Physician, however, performed His own heartsurgeryonmeduringthiswaitingperiod.

TheHolySpiritseemedtobeimpressingtwo specific Scriptures on my heart:Romans 8:28 and I John 5:14. DuringthenextthreedaysIprayedandmeditated on those Scriptures. Romans8:28tellsusthatGodcausesallthingstoworktogetherforgoodtothosewholoveHim,tothosewhoarecalledaccordingtoHis purpose. Notallthatcomesintoourlivesisgoodofcourse.Breastcancerisnotgood.Yet,forthoseofuswhobelongtoHim,thoseofuswhotrustandloveHim,wecanbeassuredthatwhateverHeallowstocomeintoourlives,eventhebadthings,HewillusetowardsHisultimategood.

Yet, for those of us who belong to Him, those of us who trust and love

Him, we can be assured that whatever He allows to come into our lives, even the bad things, He will use towards His ultimate good.

1 John 5:14 tell us: “This is theconfidence which we have before Him,that ifweaskanythingaccording toHiswill, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we knowthatwehavetherequestswhichwehaveaskedfromHim.” For us, as believers, His desires need

to be our own heart’s desires. He always knowswhat is best for us. As we growandmatureinourrelationshipwithHim,ourdesiresbegintoconformtoHis. WhenwehaveHiswillasourpriority, whenourdesireisforHisglory, wecanbeassured that God hears us and answers our prayers. On the third day of waiting, prayingand meditating on these Scriptures, Ifinallyhadabreakthrough.Icametotherealization that as His child, if indeed Ihad cancer, God was fully aware of this and in control. I realized that if Hewaspermittingcancertocomeintomylife–not causing it but permitting it,hemusthaveareason, apurposeforsomethingultimatelygood. For example, when we look at thestory of Joseph in the Old Testament,we see that he went through muchgrief and injustice. But he remainedfaithfulthroughitall, andGodusedwhathappenedtoHimforHisultimategood.

Genesis 50:20 tells us that Josephsaidtohisbrotherswhohadmistreatedhim years ago, “What you meant forevil,Godusedforgoodtosavethelivesofmanypeople.” Irealizedthatmaintainingasteadfastfaithduringatrialofpossiblepainandsuffering, couldbeusedforHisglory. Perhaps, through my own sufferingthrough cancer God could use me toreach someone for Him. FROM OUR MAILBOX

DR. KEN SCHEMMER ABOUT HIS GRANDDAUGHTER, ABBY

God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery which is: Christ in you, the hope of glory.

(Colossians 1:27 NIV) Our granddaughter, Abby, was 13when she was diagnosed with a verymalignant brain tumor. I was overjoyed to hear that. ThenursesbelievedthatIhadlefta‘legacy’in the school and hospital. I can onlysay, “May God be praised!” becausethis work is His plan. 1 Corinthians 13 Revisited

I had a three-hour flight betweentwoAfrican countries, and Iwas seatedbetweentwoladiesfromEastAsia.Iwasreadingmy New Testament and one oftheladiesaskedme. “Isthatadictionary?” Ireplied,“No,it’saNewTestament.” Sheasked,“What’saNewtestament?” Itoldherthatit’sabookaboutJesusofNazareth. She asked, “WhoisJesusofNazareth?” Well, those brief comments openedthe door to a conversation that lastedmore than an hour. We had alreadytalked about why we were traveling toEastAfrica. IhadmentionedthatIworkwith a water solutions organization,LivingWater International, and thatwehelppeopleacquireaccesstoclean, safedrinkingwater, and teach people aboutlife, relationships, friendships andotherimportantlessons. In response to the lady’s questionaboutJesusofNazareth,Iexplainedthatthe New Testament tells us about thelife, teachingsandSpiritofJesusandthatmanypeople’s lives havebeen changedbecauseofHim.Asanexample,ItoldherthestoryoftheSamaritanwomanatthewellfromJohn4.Shewasveryinterested,soIhandedhermyNewTestamentandshe read the entire chapter. I then toldherthestoryofNicodemusfromJohn3,and she read that chapter as well. I then shared with her a little moreabout the nature of Scripture, the earlier books and chapters about the Creator God, about the first man and womanandother importantbackgroundtopics.Imentioned that it isknownas theOldTestament, andthattogether, theymakeup what is known as the Holy Bible. When Isaidthat, shesaid, “Oh,IsawoneofthoseinahotelroominUganda.”When shehandedmyNewTestamentbacktome,shesaid:“Thankyou.Youhavemadethisahappytripforme.”ShehadalreadysaidthatshewouldliketogetacopyoftheBibleforherself.

ItoldhershecouldprobablygetoneinabookshopinUganda.Ifnot,Iknewshewouldfindoneinahotelroom. That experience on the plane thatday is an example of how we can usedifferent forms of communicating theGood News of Jesus. Print media, aswell as conversations and storytellingare powerful ways of reaching peoplein their appropriate context. Today, there are many other ways and meansof communicating the Gospel. We areblessed to have modern technologicalresources thatwerenotavailablea fewyearsago. A good friend of mine shared anexperience of receiving a call fromsomeonethatturnedouttobeawrongphonenumber.Oncetheyrealizeditwasthe wrong phone number, my friendquicklysaid, “Waitaminute, maybe theLordhadyou call this number for some specialreason. Have you given much thoughtfor your need of the Lord?” Thatquestion turned into a conversationover the phone which resulted in myfriend sharing theGospel and themanpraying and confessing his faith in theLord Jesus.

OfallthewaysthatthemessageofJesusChristcanbeshared–byradio,television,internetortelephone,ortheprintedpage–personalface-to-faceconversationsareprobably the most effective. PersonalengagementisalsothemosteconomicalwayofcommunicatingtheGospel.

Malawi, Africa, a country rich in beauty oftheland, butpoorintheworld’sgoods, became our new home for a season.Living south of the equatormeant thatour summers would be winters andour new winters became summer. The hospital served mostly villagers, but Malawians of wealth often droveherefromthecityfortheirmedicalcare.Villagers often brought their sick on ahome-madestretchercarriedbysixmen,who took turns with other village mentocarrythesickorinjuredperson.Manycame from great distances. For womenit was more difficult. Pregnant womenwould begin walking to the hospitalaftertheirworkwasdoneattheendoftheday.Sometimes, thismeantwalkingmileswhilethesunwassetting–rainorshine.

He reported that a woman was going to give birth along the roadside that passed in front of
