This study proves what we as caring adults do at the County Fair benefits youth way beyond just exhibing a plate of cookies, a photograph, a country cured ham, or a steer. We are providing an opportunity for youth to experience educaonal opportunies at the County Fair. Through the 4-H program, youth have the chance to visit with an adult about their project – what worked and what they might do differently to make it beer. This experience allows the youth to communicate, share goal seng, leadership, learning to learn, and crical thinking along with several other life skills. What can you do as a parent/volunteer/member to get the most out of this experience? Think specifically about what the member has learned from the project not as much on what ribbon they received. The learning experience is much more beneficial than the color of the ribbon or the amount of money they received at the aucon. Benefits of the County Fair When most people think of the County Fair, the image of a young person showing some type of livestock comes to mind. That is only a small part of the experience of the County Fair. According to a pilot study from Oregon State University, 4-H members said that having fun, achieving goals, spending time with friends and teamwork were the highest motivators to participate at the County Fair. When this study dug deeper it found that the County Fair had a significant positive effect on the participants’ level of caring, contribution and character.

This study proves what we as caring adults do at the County Fair benefits youth way beyond just exhibiting a plate of cookies, a photograph, a country cured ham, or a steer. We are providing an opportunity for youth to experience educational opportunities at the County Fair. Through the 4-H program, youth have the chance to visit with an adult about their project – what worked and what they might do differently to make it better. This experience allows the youth to communicate, share goal setting, leadership, learning to learn, and critical thinking along with several other life skills.

What can you do as a parent/volunteer/member to get the most out of this experience? Think specifically about what the member has learned from the project not as much on what ribbon they received. The learning experience is much more beneficial than the color of the ribbon or the amount of money they received at the auction. We are developing our future leaders and this is one of the many experiences on the long path of learning. The County Fair is clearly an influential and important part of life for the members who participate. Enjoy the fair!

Missouri 4-H is proud to continue Monarch Habitat Demonstration Project Mini-grants, a cooperative effort of Missouri Department of Conservation, Grow Native! retailers and Missouri 4-H; funded by the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation. This project provides $50 mini-grants to 4-H Clubs or members across the state to plant and maintain monarch habitat gardens on highly visible public properties such as county courthouses, city parks, fairgrounds, school grounds, highway right-of-ways, etc.

Camp Bob White Report June 4-6, twenty Cass County 4-Hers made the trek to Camp Bob White, along with three Cass County teens who served as camp counselors. Campers experienced three whole days from 6:00 am to 10:30pm of “Back to the 4-H Future”, fun filled activities. Mornings would start with the polar swim or the annual early morning hike. After flag raising ceremonies, breakfast was served. From there many activities were shared with friends. 4-Hers were engaged in water games, dance camp, skits, cabin time, swimming, songs and just hanging out. Wednesday was breakout sessions that lend to l earning opportunities on various topics. Breakout sessions included Code Your World, Surviving the Fu-ture and Looking ahead in Nature. We had a guest present on drones, and another present on owls. A Western Heritage team presented and did leather crafting with the campers. Campfire time is always a special way to end a busy day; especially with a guest storyteller. Campfire time is a time for songs, reflection on what 4-H means, good-by to seniors, and a charge to all 4-Hers to be engaged, seize op-portunities, be there for one another, and to be your best! The food was great! So much good home cooking to eat! Camp was a lot of hard work of planning and preparing. However, when I see all the smiles and hear the stories, I know it is worth every bit of it!

Clover Kid Camp What a safari adventure our Clover Kids experienced June 26th at the First Christian Church in Pleasant Hill. With safari hats and homemade binoculars, seven campers explored many fun activities. Campers used their creativity to make safari animals from their handprint on t-shirts. They made binoculars they used on their animal safari to spy wild animals. Campers drew animals, performed animal yoga, listened to stories, and sang songs. Using their craft skills, cute little lion pillows were constructed. Campers laced sponges to create sponge necklaces for our water game activities. On a warm afternoon we had fun with a water balloon piñata, raced fast on the sponge relay, got soaked on the rain can relay, followed by a water version of Duck, Duck, Splash! With so many smiles, screams of joy and laughter, it was a fun, filled day! Thank you to all the camp counselors who made it a fun day for the kids! Thank you to Katie Ledford who prepared the yummy lunch and snack. Thank you Dallas Gutshall for the great planning and activities! Thank you to the parents for allowing us to have your children for our camp safari! It was a FUN day!

If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact Janice at [email protected].

2019 Committees Need Volunteers The above committees met and have begun making plans to carry out events and activities. They have made great strides in just one meeting. If interested in serving on any committee please contact Janice at [email protected].

4-H Council Elections It is not too early to be thinking about running for a Cass County 4-H Council Office. The 2019-2020, 4-H Council election will take place at the September Council meeting. To be eligible to run for a council office, the 4-H member must be 12 years of age by January 1, 2019. 4-H Indoor Exhibits & Show Requirements Remember you must meet the following requirement to show and participate in 4-H events Attend at least 50% of club meetings. Attend at least 6 hours of project meetings (10 for shooting sports),

more if required by project leader. Be part of a project that has a certified 4-H leader who will sign pa-

perwork for exhibiting. Animal project members must meet SMQA requirements (horse not

included).

The judging will take place from 5:00 –9:00 p.m. There will be a sched-ule for each club please contact your club leader for those times.

Judging for all indoor projects will be held on July 17th at the Memorial Building in Pleasant Hill. All youth are required to talk one-on-one with a judge about their exhibit. 4-H members must participate in confer-ence judging to be eligible for ribbons.

Youth who are unable to be there need to provide a 3x5 card with information about their project (steps in how it was made, what was difficult, what they liked, what they would change, etc.). Members who chose to do this route are NOT eligible to exhibit at State Fair unless they fill out the NEW project excused form, and have it signed by the 4-H Staff and Club Leaders, This form is available at the extension office. It is unfair to those who have gone through the judging process; how-ever, if you have another commitment it is possible to move up in the judging schedule, to an earlier time, but only with approval. This form can be found on the Cass County website or obtained at the Extension Office.

The State Indoor guidelines have been updated for the 2019 year, please look at them carefully, they are available on the Cass County website or in paper copy at the Cass County Extension office.
