The ‘custom’ peptide business has become com-moditized in recent years as more and more low-cost, quick turnaround sources appear around the world. Yet researchers pursuing peptide-based drug devel-opment projects increasingly seek more complex structures and services that often exceed the capa-bilities of many of these service providers. International, with a long history of providing custom peptides, has just completed a major commitment in personnel and equipment that will allow it to satisfy the custom chemistry needs of the most demanding researchers and their ever increasing challenges.Addition of the new resources has resulted in the designation of “complex custom peptides” as PI’s newest Technology Platform (see PEPNET Vol. 22 No. 2). Employee Spotlight

Dr. Satendra Chauhan comes to Peptides International with an impressive background of academic and commercial pep-tide experience. After completing his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the renowned M.S. University of Baroda, India he pursued postdoctoral studies in medicinal chemistry at the University of Oklahoma. His commercial experience began at Peninsula Laboratories and for the past ten years, he has been Director of Organic Research at Bachem Bioscience. Dr. Chauhan’s areas of expertise include retrosynthetic analysis, synthesis, purification and analysis of complex organic molecules, peptides, and peptidomimetics and total synthesis of natural products. Dr. Chauhan also holds an MBA in Technology Management and is the author of numerous publications and presentations in peptide chemistry. He enjoys reading and community service. He is looking forward to helping PI grow and prosper, and making it an even better peptide company in the years ahead. Dr. Rommel S. Talan has also made quite a circuitous route to PI, one that has taken him liter-ally halfway around the world. He hails from the Catanduanes Island of the

Philippines. As an instructor, he taught analytical and organic laboratory classes at the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. After Dr. Talan acquired his M.S. in Agricultural Chemistry from Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan, he returned to Los Baños as a assistant Professor and eventually a Senior Lecturer. Dr. Talan eventually settled in Ohio where he completed his Ph.D. in chemistry. Among his many notable experiences there, Dr. Talan executed solution and solid phase syntheses of peptides and glycopeptides bearing N and C-termini modifications that are required for chemical ligations. His professional interests include glycopeptide synthesis and chemical liga-tion. Rommel enjoys a wide variety of activities including travelling (of course), biking, swimming, bowling, and cooking.

Peptides International is proud of the diversity of its employees, while sharing a common desire to offer our customers their absolute best in creating service and product value. This issue features two of our most recent additions to the staff.

NEW! Maleimide Activated-KLH Carrier ProteinSulfhydryl-reactive KLH for preparation of immunogens with cysteine-containing peptides and haptens

Activated KLH (Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin) is a popu-lar choice to use as a carrier protein for haptens in order to assist in the activation of an immune response. Haptens or small peptides are often limited by their size and cannot elicit an immune response by themselves. Activated KLH has a large molecular mass and high immunogenic prop-erties that are ideal for immunogenic stimulation. Small peptides containing free sulfhydryl groups can react with Maleimide groups of this carrier protein to form stable thio-ether bonds. Such carrier peptide conjugates can be used to stimulate antibodies for immunization.

The tragedies of the earthquakes, tsunami, and nuclear power station problems in Japan have touched us all. Peptides International has been in contact with our friends at the Peptide

Institute. We are heartened to hear that everyone there is safe, all buildings and facilities have no damage, and business is continuing without interruption. The national impact has been immense, and our sympathy and concern extends to everyone affected.

of-the art equipment adding additional synthetic, purification, lyophilizaton and scale-up capability. Jackie Spatola, Chair of the Board of PI, described these changes as “truly historic“ for PI and added that this new initiative aimed at meet-ing the most difficult peptide projects was exactly the vision her husband Arno had in mind when he found-ed the company. The elements of the new Platform span a wide range of tech-nologies (see diagram) ranging from traditional solution and solid phase synthesis to peptido-mimetics as illustrated by depsi-peptide bond formation and HET isostere incorporation. Expertise in multi-step organic synthesis and peptide modification offer a virtually limitless range of custom options extending from glycosylation to fluo-

phosphorylation, and more. In depth examples of these options will be

featured in upcoming PEPNET issues as will new catalog offer-

ings that may result from their use. In this issue, we

are delighted to present just such an example – a new Maleimideactivat-ed-KLH carrier protein, (KLH-6000-PI) which illustrates the range of new possibilities in the area of peptide-protein conjugates. With the introduction of

this Technology Platform, Peptides International is

proud to be able to offer such a comprehensive array

of complex custom peptide services and invites you to

20th American Peptide Symposium

On behalf of the American Peptide Society, we are pleased to invite you to the 20th jubilee of the American Peptide Symposium, "Peptides for Youth" to be held in Montreal, Canada from June 26 to 30, 2007. This symposium will serve to remember the accomplishments of society members since Professors Saul Lande and Boris Weinstein organized the First American Peptide Symposium at Yale University in 1968. Moreover, "Peptides

for Youth" will strive to attract Young Investigators to participate in a meeting that recognizes and highlights their achievements, and incites their interests with a stimulating scientific program, featured in a vibrant city, Montreal. The night life and quality of entertainment in Montreal are world renown and by holding the Meeting around the time of the Montreal Grand Prix and Montreal Jazz Festival, participants can enjoy mixing quality Science with fast motorcar racing, great music and fun. Bilingual, multi-cultural and safe, Montreal offers outstanding facilities, hotels, restaurants and entertainment centers for a memorable meeting.

Peptides International would like to acknowlege two former employees with whom many customers and researchers have had contact over the years:

• Dr. DeAnna W. Long, who was Director of Business Development, but during her tenure at PI wore many hats, has moved on to a new role in academia.

• Lisa Civello, who was Product Manager, has taken a position in the non-profit sector in marketing.

They will be missed and we wish both of them well in their future endeavors!

Lastly, please note our recent mailing address change:
