The Dating Game:

A Practitioner’s Guide to Supplier Selection William T. Walker, CFPIM, CIRM, CSCP

Starting a new supplier relationship is like playing the dating game. A potential partner is dated over the Internet. Certain information is ex-changed. This presentation details an efficient three step methodology for building trust with a candidate supplier through 1) a Request For Quote, 2) a supplier visit and 3) a first article evaluation. Requirements for a new supplier relation-ship boil down to “musts” and “wants”. The musts include validating that the candidate supplier is process capable for the required commodity, is competitive in its pricing structure, and has sufficient capacity to grow with the business opportunity. The wants are focused on managing risk by assessing the supplier’s financial, information sharing, engineering support, and quality performance. The field of candidate suppliers is whit-tled down by the Request For Quote before conducting expensive visits with the top one or two candidates. Finally, the candidate supplier’s first article is carefully evaluated to seal the beginning of a trusting relationship. The seller benefits by winning the deal.
