Page 10: “A & P” Outline

Look through the quote bank for “A & P” and select quotes that fit with your thesis.

If you argue that Sammy acts in a foolish way, find quotes that show it is foolish.

Page 11: “A & P” Outline

Part A- Thoughts◦Write them under CITE (a)◦“Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3).

◦Your choice

Step 2: Find Appropriate Quotes

Page 12: “A & P” Outline

Part A- Thoughts Introduce: What is happening in the story before this quote?

Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3).

Step 3: Introduce the Quote

Page 13: “A & P” Outline

Part A – Thoughts Introduce: While Sammy watches the girls, he notices that they are also being watched by McMahon.

Page 14: “A & P” Outline

Part A – Thoughts Introduce: While Sammy watches the girls, he

notices that they are also being watched by McMahon.

Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3).

Explain how your quote supports your thesis…

Step 4: Explain the Quote

Page 15: “A & P” Outline

Part A – Thoughts Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they

couldn’t help it” (3). Explain: The narrator notices that the girls in the store are being watched by the butcher. His disconnect from the girls is obvious because he refers to them as a collective group, not by their individual names. This depicts that he does not have a deep connection to the girls and his act of quitting was impulsive and not for the benefit of the girls.

Step 4: Explain the Quote FOOLISH

Page 16: “A & P” Outline

Part A – Thoughts Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they

couldn’t help it” (3). Explain: This emotion shows that Sammy has compassion for the situation the girls are in, and because of this, he feels it necessary to defend them when Lengel makes fun of them. When he quits, he does so in protest for the way the girls have been treated in the store. He takes a stand for the honor of the girls.

Step 4: Explain the QuoteNOBLE

Page 17: “A & P” Outline

Part A – The thoughts of Sammy depict the [foolishness/nobleness] of his act of quitting.

Introduce: While Sammy watches the girls, he notices that they are also being watched by McMahon.

Cite: “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3).

Explain: (either how it is foolish or noble)

At this point, you should have…

Page 23: “A & P” Outline

When writing your paragraph, you MUST incorporate your quote into a grammatically correct sentence.

This is not acceptable: While Sammy watches the girls, he notices that

they are also being watched by McMahon. “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3).

Incorporating CITE

THE QUOTE CANNOT BE A SENTENCE ON ITS OWN.

This is acceptable: While Sammy watches the girls, he notices that

they are also being watched by McMahon. Sammy then thinks to himself, “Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” (3).
