Improvements to My Organization:

I’ve used this product in multiple ways. Initially, I integrated it with QAS addresssoftware to validate and standardize customer website registration data in realtime, loading the cleansed customer data into Siebel CRM. I’ve used the dataprofiling reports to identify errors in ETL jobs and enterprise data warehouses. I’vebuilt business rule metrics that score ETL jobs in terms of data completeness anddata accuracy between the business application data store and the enterprise datawarehouse. All efforts have proved invaluable to the business user.

Use of Solution:

SAS Data Management Studio V 2.4

Deployment Issues:

While the deployment is more complex now that it was 7 years ago, if you follow thedetailed instructions from SAS regarding the software depot deployment, it is notdifficult, and can be completed in 1-2 hours easily.

Stability Issues:

The server side component runs rock solid on Linux. The Windows clientcomponent is less stable, and may require a restart a few times a day, especially ifinstalled on a PC with limited RAM and you are dealing with very large data stores.Since I’m one major release behind in this software, it’s possible these clientstability issues have been corrected in the most recent release.

Scalability Issues:

Very large data stores require a powerful server to run the data profiling reports forall of the rows in the database. My estimate for “very large” is a database >= 200million records.

Customer Service:

When DataFlux was a standalone company, the customer service deserved an A+rating. Now that it is a wholly owned subsidiary of SAS, and just one piece of agiant software conglomerate, I would give them a C+.


Technical Support:

Technical support is strong at resolving install and configuration issues of the clientside tool. You will need to speak with a SAS DataFlux consultant to debug complextechnical issues related to the data quality jobs you code, or server side problems.

Implementation Team:

I’m an independent DataFlux consultant, so I am “the vendor”. I’ve partnered withSAS consultants on implementations, as well as performed solo installations. SASDataFlux consultants are top notch in their expertise of the tool and data. But theyare not required to install successfully, just add a level of confidence.

ROI:

The ROI can be very high in terms of improving the reliability and accuracy of dataused in forecasting and marketing models (ex: customer data, sales data). You canalso reduce storage costs; slow the need for hardware upgrades by using DataFluxto eliminate duplicate data. Even better, use DataFlux to audit your ETL and datawarehouse efforts, insuring accurate reporting. CEOs and CIOs will drop $10M fora new ERP system installed by a big-4 consulting firm, and then balk at 5% of thiscost to insure that the data stored in this complex and costly ERP system is notcorrupt or full of duplicate data.

Yes, including Business Objects, IBM’s Infosphere, and Trillium.

Other Advice:

Take the time to send a minimum of 3 of your most technical data architects toonsite training at SAS in Cary, North Carolina. Their facilities and teachers areexcellent, and this training is of great benefit for your organization over the longterm.

The possibility to create a data profiling mapping automatically from any importedsource.

The client installation includes a macro that can be imported into Excel. This willcontains standard documents for technical design and documentation in general.The technical design developed in Excel can be directly imported into Powercenterusing Powercenter Repository Manager and the corresponding mapping isautomatically created. This can save a lot of development time for simple or notvery complex mappings. This feature is called Mapping Analyst for Excel.

The default error handling, automatically created, is quite good for thosearchitectures that don't have a proper one or a budget for a custom one.


As all ETL tools in general, it does not include a good data reporting feature.

Another one is the component called "Union" which includes some bugs:

Adding new groups, the field-names are lost

Adding new fields, the field type should be reset for all fields in the "Union" or themapping validation will fail.

There is no possibility of handle non matching records in a "joiner" as in DataStage.

Our organization is using it because it is one of the leading data integration toolsavailable in the market and supports large data volumes and meets our demandsfor security and performance. PowerCenter is serving as the data integrationfoundation for our enterprise integration initiatives including data warehousing, datagovernance, data migration, SOA), and MDM. Powercenter in my opinion has thebest data transfer technologies including its standard, advanced, big data, realtime, data virtualization and cloud editions.

This product is meant to replace Oracle's Data Guard replication. The setup issimple and it can handle bi directional replication very easily. Training cost isminimal and most DBAs self learn this product. replication between various types ofdatabases is supported and software foot print is very small . Change trails are notvery big and easy to manage and store.


DDL (data definition language) replication is still to mature and can be an issue.Supplemental logging causes extra redo log generation in the log storage.Licensing cost is higher as compared to other replication products. Configuration ofGolden Gate in HA (High Availability) mode needs setup of extra VIPs which canbe challenging in a RAC environment.

Other Advice:

Integration of Golden Gate with monitoring tools like OEM (Oracle EnterpriseManager) is still not available and most DBAs monitor this with custom scripts. Wechose this product mostly on it's bidirectional replication feature and easy setup.Some applications are using this as a messaging mechanism between multipledatabases.

It is unable to provide separate user account for each user like Data Hub. ActuallyMicrosoft SSIS is more designed to build ETL solutions for enterprise level unlikeData Hub where each user can access the database and have their own sets ofdatabases.Need to improve error logging although it does provide error logs butthere is still more room for improvement in this area.

Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services is one of the most effective ETL toolsavailable in the market.Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services is very low costcompared to the market’s leader Informatica (Power Center) and almost offerseverything you need to build your ETL solution.

Other Advice:

You need to have Microsoft SQL Server (Enterprise Edition) licensed to runMicrosoft SSIS on your production environment. Like every other Microsoft product,It offers a very vibrant MSDN community along with Microsoft support staff forassistance.

In order to ensure real-time data integration, Oracle Data Integration suiteprovides all key components required to enable real-time data warehousing andoperational data hubs.


As with any big tool, truly mastering ODI may take months.

Other Advice:

Oracle Data Integrator separates the declarative rules from the implementationdetails. It can run entirely within a Service Oriented Architecture. ODI is the mostintegrated ETL product for running data integration as a service, accessing webservices and writing to web services as a target.

Very buggy. Very slow. They have many things to improve and fix.We intended touse Pervasive Data Integrator for different projects. At the moment, we can't evenuse it for 1, since it keeps failing in our QA testing. So far it's been a completewaste of money.

Valuable Features:

The graphical user interface and powerful SQL generation capabilities make thecoding of ETL flows very easy and efficient. The ability to easily run processes inparallel or sequentially is also very valuable. Overall the ease of use is DataServices key benefit.


While Data Services performs very well when dealing with relational structures andto a lesser degree with delimited files, there is significant room from improvementwith the integration with web services and related data formats (XML, JSON, etc.).We have had to code our own ETL processes in Python or Java to extract datafrom all but the simplest web services.

If you have a need to access non-relational data sources, review the tool’scapabilities for your specific use cases very carefully.

•All staff members and users can request an account which can be accessedfrom all PC’s on the company’s network.

•There is no need to worry about accidental changes because all the usersaccess the data in read only mode. All updatable information must be held in yourown applications. Direct access to the DataHub database, also removes the needto load data into individual systems using file downloads. Often direct databaseaccess is not permitted on other source systems, other than through frontendscreens.

•Any changes to any of the underlying systems will be hidden. It removes theneed to re-write applications using the DataHub.

• Individual and departmental user’s data access is controlled, to remove thechances of inadvertently publishing sensitive data.


•Data in the datahub refreshes nightly. As the data only refreshes once every day,it is necessary to have to wait for any changes to thesource systems to becomeavailable.The daily refresh can be extremely useful for reconciling data.

•DataHub only displays details of current members of the Organization. So it hasmuch limited data available for generation of dynamic reports.

•DataHub is volatile. The records are completely re-loaded each day. It putsburden on the system.

•There are very few summary tables available due to storage of data in a detailedformat.

•The detailed information is not stored in the DataHub. It is stored in the relevantsource system. Only commonly required data is stored within the DataHub.

Other Advice:

A DataHub is a read only database that provides a common data source forapplications including central services and departmental systems. Data in theDataHub is extracted from centrally administered databases and is available to allmembers of staff and local application within an organization. It is typically used toupdate local database, providing data for websites and intranets. It is also used asapplication data source e.g. contact directory.

It was a fundamental tool for the Data Warehouse development team. With TalendOpen Studio, all the ETL process are documented and well implemented.


The Enterprise Version needs to be more similar to the Talend Open Studio. Thereare so many differences and so we needed time to learn and become familiar withthe enterprise version, which was not so great for us.

Yes. First we use Talend Open Studio but afterwards we bought Talend Enterprise.We found that we need to create new team profiles. This was something that wehad not predict before, the need to use the Talend Admin Center (TAC). We don’thave yet that yet and of course getting it requires effort, adds on costs and moretime to develop.

Don’t precipitate the acquisition of the Enterprise version. Using Talend OpenStudio for small companies is enough, but for big companies analyze first verycarefully the cost and effort to switch to Enterprise version.

One of the reasons we chose the Talend integration suite was because it is anopen source data integration tool. It provides us a central repository for sharing ourenterprise metadata and meets our operational and analytical data integrationneeds. We like the fact that it offers data quality functionality, ESB and MDMsolutions in a single package. We can easily manage huge data volumes andcentrally supervise our software integration processes.
