It seems appropriate that we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph during the Christmas season, just after families have gathered for Christmas, frequently with stress over gift-giving, travel drama, and the intricacies of meal preparation for people with their various dietary needs and preferences. Today’s readings ask us to put family and life in their sacred and holy perspective. When we take care of aging parents we care for Christ, who is with all and in all. When we approach one another with compassion, kindness, gentleness, and patience, we communicate Christ’s love. Even when the Lord leads in ways we cannot quite appreciate or understand, we must follow God’s will, knowing that in doing so, we cooperate with God’s grace in our midst. Every family is called to be a holy family. One theme common to all three readings today is obedience. Sirach commends the son who obeys his father. St. Paul tells children to obey their parents “in everything.” And the Gospel shows Joseph obedient to the warnings of the angel. Yet all three put obedience in terms of a larger relationship. Sirach says that obedience is part of what makes a happy family. Children trust that their parents have good reason for telling them to do something. Children also learn both discipline and how to contribute to family life. St. Paul shows how love of Christ transforms a family. When he talks about wives being subordinate and husbands loving them, he means that husbands and wives should defer to each other and love each other. Parents might look at the gospel for support in encouraging obedience. Families can learn that stressing obedience can protect the child as well as teach. Parents can also remind children that God asks for obedience for our good, not on a whim. When we obey God’s law, we learn to trust God more deeply and to appreciate that God’s law enables us to live more freely.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“Wives, be subordinate to your husbands…Husbands, love your

wives…Children, obey your parents in everything…Fathers, do

not provoke your children…” (Colossians 3:18-21)

Pope Francis said that families, through their life of prayer and love, become "schools of true human growth." Being credible witnesses of Christian love, especially that of family members, exerts the most positive influence on our children. We are all children of God, let us pray and love each other as God, Our Father, does for us

Jesus is God’s ultimate gift of love to us. When we dedicate our lives to sharing all the many gifts that God has placed within our hands, the peace of Christ truly will control our hearts. We will know Christmas joy every day.

SALVATION IN DAILY LIFE

This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes

on the first Sunday after Christmas Day. Today’s feast

celebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his entire

family life) has brought saving significance into the daily

rhythms of our human family life.

The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how

to share—within our families, parish families, and the

wider human family—the love that God shares with us in

Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians

encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in

all our human relationships. The reading from Matthew’s

Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph

took to protect his young family from danger and to nurture

them within the larger family of faith of their time.

Over all [other virtues] put on love,

that is, the bond of perfection.

- Colossians 3:14

NEWS FROM CHERYL HALL Director of Faith Formation

SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD On Wednesday, January 1st the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Mary is her willingness to know and do God’s will. While we would like to follow her example, we wonder how she was so sure of it. She reflected on events that happened and were happening. She mediated. In our busy lives today, we often overlook meditation as a prayer. Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 31st at 6:00pm and Wednesday, January 1st at 9:00am. We remind Catholics of their obligation to attend Mass on this day.

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY House Blessing Kits

Next Sunday, January 5th, we will celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord, the traditional day to bless homes. House Blessing Kits will be made available next weekend, January 4/5 for families to bless their own homes. These kits include the prayer of blessing, a vial of Holy Water and a piece of blessed chalk with which you can write above the main door of your house 20 + C + M + B + 20 (C, M, & B stand for the names of the three wise men, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar). It also stands for the first letters of the Latin saying, Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ Bless this House!". The blessing should take place before the close of the Christmas season, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord which is Sunday, January 12th. May this special door of your house be a reminder of all the Blessings and Graces that this New Year can bring. We ask our parishioners to return the Holy Water vials when finished so we can use them again next year. A box will be placed on the bulletin table for these Holy Water bottles.

May God bless you and shine favor upon you in 2020. Happy New Year!
