A Pirate from Hammerfell

By Joy Mariette B. Cristo

Inside the cabin of that huge creepy ship, an old man is lying on a bed while looking

at the window. He can see the wide blue ocean and the endless horizon. His ship is

huge but the world is much bigger. He is powerful, a symbol of strength and

authority in that essel but outside that ship he is nothing. He gae commands to

his crew, his men who hae been his family for a long time and until the end. He

held the sword beside him. His hands that hae slain many brae men are now

weak. His body that was strong and full is now frail. He looks at the sword with sad

eyes. !hat keen"edged sword with an engrae letter H has been his weapon,

treasure, and key to open the door to his mysterious origin. #n the blade of the

sword, he can see his face$ a face that once full of hope is now helpless. In his deep

blue eyes, his past %ashes like lightnings.

#n his eins runs a royal blood but was changed foreer because of that one faithfulnight.

Cries were heard eerywhere, bullets and arrows rain, a feud between two great

kingdoms has ignited and through the huge walls of Hammerfell a &re had started.

!he 'tornians hae successfully inaded them. !hey set Hammerfell in &re. (ing

)drouss was trying to protect his *ueen who was carrying their only child. +ueen

aia was horri&ed as she witnessed how (ing -rdrin slain her beloed maesty but

before (ing -rdrin can kill her child she gae him to /enisa, one of their loyal

serants and told her to run away. Meanwhile, a band of pirates were sharing from

the ruins of Hammerfell, taking adantage of the war by stealing some of the ewels

and other treasures they can get.

/enisa tried to hide from the 'tornians but she knew she cannot escape from them

and so she hide the baby in a chest and bring it in a place near a cli0. 'he placed a

sword with him, the sword of Hammerfell1s greatest king, )drouss. !he &re was

deouring the whole kingdom. Before she got caught by the 'tornians she pushed

the chest o0 the cli0 hoping the baby would surie.2-lmighty 3od, please hae

mercy on our prince, sae him2, /enisa cried.

(ing -rdrin has fallen to the beauty that +ueen aia has, a face that can launch a

thousand ships, and brought her to 'torn and made her his *ueen. 'tornians hae

left the kingdom of Hammerfell with nothing but ashes and dead people, memoriesand heartaches.

!he pirate1s ship went aboard when the &re had &nally slow down because of the

heay rain. Hammerfell was now ruined. -s the helmsman was maneuering the

ship and the crews were busy keeping the water from seeping in, the sea artist of

the pirate ship has seen something %oating in the big waes. !he crew got it, they

were e4cited as they discoered that it was a chest and they were assuming that it

was full of treasures coming from the ruins of Hammerfell. 5Captain 6ascard7 8e

hae some things to settle2, said the crew. 5#h, a gift from the sea2, said the

captain as he saw the chest. 5#pen it72 the captain commanded. !he whole ship

was ery e4cited of what1s inside. 9ntil a cry was heard, the captain was ery

surprised to see a baby in the chest with a sword and the crew got upset. 5Just

throw it away, it will only be a burden2, said the captain. !he *uartermaster whowas second in command stopped the crew from throwing the chest.2Halt72, he said.

!he captain gae him a strange look. 5Markos, what do you want with that thing:2,

asked Captain 6ascard. 5Just leae that thing to me2, answered Markos. 5-s the

*uartermaster of this ship, I1ll gie you a right then to get you want, that will sere

as your reward for now2, the Captain replied. 5But you will be responsible for that

thing, do we hae an accord:2, he added. 5-ye, aye, captain2, said Markos.

Many years hae passed$ the child grew under the care of his foster"father Markos,

he named the baby -lastair, but his life in the pirate ship was not easy een though

Markos is the *uartermaster. Markos took care of him but when he turned eleen,

Markos told -lastair that he must stand on his own and took part in the ship and

made his way to be called 5a pirate2. irst, he became a powder monkey together

with those young lads kidnapped and forced to sere aboard the ship. !hey mainly

assisted the gun crews and learned most of the ship1s basics but were paid little and

treated poorly. 'ome of -lastair1s companions were *uick to sign the articles and

desert the ship. -lastair belieed that someday he will earn importance in the ship.

!hen he became a cabin boy and was e4pected to learn the maritime trade. He

acted as Captain 6ascard1s serant. He ran messages and errands for the o;cers,

he works long hard hours and Captain 6ascard noticed that he was a young

energetic fellow.

-lastair really was determined to be a pirate. 8hen he turned eighteen, he

e4perienced his &rst &ght as they were con*uering a ship. He learned to use sword,

gun, and grenades. Captain 6ascard grew fond of him because -lastair is a smart

boy and Markos is ery proud of him. But inside that enthusiastic boy, a great

mystery about his identity always comes across his mind when all were asleep. -s

he was looking at the stars in the sky, he wondered who his parents are, the sword

that Markos gae him on his birthday added to the riddle of his origin, Markos told

him about how the crew saed him from the waes near the cli0 where the burning

Hammerfell was. 5Maybe my parents died in that war2, -lastair wondered.

/ater the night when the ships of 'torn seen them ashore in the kingdom of Hammerfell, the 'tornians1 ships bombarded them. !he ship was shocked of the

attack but fortunately they hae escaped from the eyes of the 'tornians. 2Markos72,

-lastair shouted as he saw Markos was badly wounded and then he laid the dying

Markos on his lap. 5-lastair you hae a choice, dig yourself from the ruins of

Hammerfell and &nd who you really are or be here foreer, a thief, a pirate2, that1s

the &nal words of Markos. -lastair was sitting still beside Markos1 corpse. 53et up,

boy2, the captain commanded. 5<ou hae some decisions to be made2, Captain

6ascard added as he was handling the articles to -lastair.

'oon, -lastair became one of the pirates of Hammerfell. !he feeling of being called

5a pirate2 had oerwhelmed him. He became too e4cited of adentures that will

come his way. !hey went to a place near the mermaids1 lagoon in the southern partof !hendara, a land of pirates. Captain 6ascard asked the crew to ote who will

replace Markos as the *uartermaster. !hey chose -lastair and they drank the whole

night. 5<o ho, a pirate1s life for me, a toast to piracy and its many shiny rewards,

we1re deils and black sheep, really bad eggs, drink for me2, -lastair said as he

drank a lot of beers and others were singing pirate songs. -s soon as all were

asleep, Captain 6ascard saw the sword of -lastair, it was a beautiful sword and he

tried to touch it but -lastair caught his hand. Captain 6ascard smiled,2 !he 'word of

Hammerfell is not the treasure I1m going to part with2, he said. 5=ot all treasure is

siler and gold Captain2, -lastair replied.

-lastair turned twenty"one, and fell in loe. !his lady who had captured his heart is)rminie. He had met her at the market in (ingdom of 'torn while he was looking for

some weapons that they needed in the ship when he saw her running from the

(ing1s knights. 'he was a good runner$ she ran too fast that he neer noticed that

the lady had stolen his precious sword that Markos had gien him before he died.

He followed her to that narrow streets of the market and cornered her, but she was

not willing to gie the sword.2 It1s mine now2, the lady smiled, 5you can neer get it

back2. 5<oung lady, you neer know what you1re in for2, -lastair said trying to scare

her. It was late when )rminie realized that -lastair was not alone, he was with some

of the crew. 'he got caught by the pirates and had her imprisoned. 5It was not safe

for young lady like you to mess around2, said -lastair as she was put into ail by the

crew inside the ship.2/et go of me2, )rminie said angrily trying to let go of the

strong hands that held her. 58hy would I do that:2 -lastair asked as he looks at her

beautiful face seriously. 5I1m the daughter of (ing -rdrin$ I1m >rincess )rminie so I

command you2, she said braely, after a second of silence the whole ship laugh.

5<ou hae gien me enough reason to make you a captie2, -lastair said.

'he was imprisoned, that made the king ery angry upon knowing of what

happened to his daughter. He had sent ships to look for that pirate ship of Captain

6ascard. #ne year had passed but the search for the princess neer stopped until

they hae seen the pirate ship near the mermaids1 lagoon far away from 'torn.

!hey hae battled against each other and Captain 6ascard got wounded. -lastairnow must lead the crew so that they would not lose hope. He braely led his men to

con*uer the 'tornian ships. He now learned to loe )rminie as time passed by, she

was not a captie anymore, and the crew hae treated her good but neer allowed

her to be free. )rminie has also become fond of -lastair, she hae known him for a

year and &nally fell in loe with him. But -lastair1s crew failed. )rminie was rescued

after a long time.

'he came back to the king without the happy feeling of being free. 'he

remembered -lastair all the time, she has seen him got wounded. 'he was worried,

she wanted to go back there and see him but she knew her father wouldn1t let her.

-fter a month, she heard that Captain 6ascard and his crew were caught. !hey were

put into the dark dungeon. !omorrow they will be sentence to die. )rminie decided

to escape the watchful eyes of the knights and went to the dungeon to see if -lastair was one of them. But she got caught and was brought to the (ing. (ing

-rdrin has planned to make wedding arrangement with the (ing of -rillin. He

wanted )rminie to get married with (ing ?alentinn1s son >rince Clyde. But she

doesn1t want to$ she said she would rather kill herself than to marry a man she

neer knew.

+ueen aia was comforting her loely daughter, )rminie, who was crying on her

arms. 'he told him about -lastair, about the loe she has to the pirate and that it

would cost her life to see him die.

-t the death sentence, (ing -rdrin was there and on his right was the (ing of -rillin,whom he had inited for the arrangement, and also >rince Clyde. )rminie decided to

go and see her loe for the last time. 8hen -lastair and his crew marched to the

platform where they will be hanged, they sing a song of pirates making the king

annoyed. -s they were putting their heads in the rope, +ueen aia looked at -lastair

sadly. 'he doesn1t know that the man before her ery eyes is her son. )rminie was

ery gloomy as she looked at her beloed facing death, she cannot bear to see him

su0ering.

'uddenly, arrows coming from nowhere hae killed some of the knights. 5>irates7

>irates7,2 people were shouting. (ing -rdrin and the other royalties were being

protected from the dangerous pirates from !hendara. !hey came to sae theiralliance, Captain 6ascard is one of the members of the >irate1s Congress and they

hae pledged to help each other in times of trouble and so they did. !hey freed

Captain 6ascard1s crew and ran towards the cli0 then ump o0, down there a

number of pirate ships were waiting.28here1s the princess:2, (ing -rdrin shouted as

he noticed that )rminie was not with them. )rminie ran towards -lastair, in the

midst of the crowd, they looked at each other with loe and longing.

-lastair asked )rminie to come with him and she did. But before they can ump o0

(ing -rdrin pulled the trigger of his pistol, unfortunately it was the princess who

receied it. -s they land to the water, a pirate ship has saed them. -lastair tried to

reie )rminie but it was too late. He laid her to the shore, he doesn1t want to leae

her but he has no choice, the pirates were impatiently waiting, it1s his life against

his loe, what could be more important than loe but he cannot bring her with him,

he cannot gie her a burial that is rightful to her.

!he kingdom of 'torn has mourned oer the death of the princess and so was

-lastair. He became gloomy and desolate. !he unbearable sorrow that he felt when

he saw )rminie dying on his arms made him sick.

In !hendara, -lastair heard stories about Hammerfell, how it was set in &re by the

'tornians and how (ing -rdrin slain the mighty king )drouss and stolen +ueen aia. !hey also mentioned that the +ueen has a son but after the war, he was neer seen

again, maybe he died in the &re. -lastair thought engeance towards the cruel king

of 'torn would gie ustice to the death of his parents whom he neer knew, the

death of Markos, and the death of )rminie. He is determined to kill the king of 'torn.

!he royal ship of 'torn went to -rillin to settle the wedding arrangement of >rince

Clyde and the daughter of (ing -rdrin to his &rst wife since )rminie, daughter of

+ueen aia, died. But in front of the land of Hammerfell, pirate ships attacked them.

-lastair came face to face with (ing -rdrin and to his heart -lastair planted the

royal sword of Hammerfell. +ueen aia saw the sword that made her felt a shier

inside.28ho are you: How did you get that sword:, she asked. -lastair didn1t knowwhat to say. 5It1s the sword of my dearest king )drouss of Hammerfell, I gae it to

my serant with my son2, +ueen aia touched the face of -lastair. 5<ou hae his

eyes, yes its you my dear son, )dric, you suried2, +ueen aia was about to

embrace -lastair when blood came out of her mouth. -n arrow coming from one of

the crew killed her. -lastair wasn1t able to moe, he was in shock. His mother is a

+ueen, he hated royal bloods but he was one. He hated them but he loed one, and

that woman is a half"sister. )rminie.

-fter the attack, the pirates1 ships went away. Captain 6ascard saw -lastair sitting

still, he knew he was like that then he sit beside -lastair and told that he must

accept the reality and go on. But -lastair will neer forget that all his loe ones diedon his arms, and hae not done anything for them. It was too late, too late for

eerything.

8hen Captain 6ascard died, -lastair was chosen to run the ship. -fter so many

years of con*uering ships, stealing and killing still he was not happy, not contented

of what he has. 8hy is fate cruel to me: 8hat now is true happiness: , he asked his

self as he was looking at the sword. He had remembered the past. He is now old

and weary and neer achieed any happiness in his life. His adentures were oer$

the energetic pirate days hae passed.

'uddenly a young lad appeared on his side and said,2 Captain -lastair, thehappiness you wanted can neer be yours because it was not here. My father told

me that sometimes, fate has a cruel way of putting things together. Maybe it1s

better if people ust gie up when there1s no point in &ghting for something

anymore. 8hen the ship has &nally sailed, only a fool would go after it when it1s

already miles away. But sometimes it1s a lot better to be a fool to go after what we

want and need, rather than to regret eerything in the end because we neer een

tried howeer if the ship you are looking for was long been gone een though you

search the whole ocean you can neer &nd It.2, then he went away.

-lastair can see his self on that cabin boy$ he was once like that, an energetic

fellow. 8hat that young lad has said is true and it hurts him. It breaks his heart into

pieces. He failed on his *uest.

!ears fell from his eyes, his hand slowly let go of the sword then closed his eyes. He

thought if he cannot &nd happiness in this world may be in his dreams 3od would

let him hae the happiness he neer had achieed.

!hen the chirping of birds awakened his peaceful sleep, he found himself lying on a

green &eld. He stood up and saw a wonderful place, the sky is clear and the wide

ocean is sparkling like diamonds, the sun seems smiling to him. !hen he heard a

oice coming from a castle, 5)dric72, called the oice, the oice echoed, he ran

towards where the oice was coming from then he found himself in front of a huge

wooden gate. !he gate opened, he went inside and there were people waiting for

him, welcoming him like he had gone too long, then he realized his old and weary

body changed into a youthful one, full of energy and hope. He came back to his

childhood appearance, a little boy. >eople looked at him with loe and respect. !hen

he heard the oice again calling out 5)dric72, he looked around until he saw +ueen

aia and standing beside him is (ing )drouss, the +ueen reach out her hand to him,

58elcome to Hammerfell, my son, welcome home72, she said. He was surprised

seeing them, seeing his father for the &rst time, and there was a little girl hiding

behind the +ueen, he looked familiar to him, he knew he had met her but he didn1t

knew where and when, then the little girl ran towards him, held his hand and said, 5I

hae been waiting for you2, at that he knew who the girl was. He was about to run

towards his parents when he heard a oice coming out of the gate, calling out5Captain7 Captain72, the oice seems full of sorrow and grief but then he decided to

come with the girl and e4perience the happiness he always dreamed of. !hen the

gate closed.

-lastair1s crews are waking their captain up but he neer moed a bit then they

realized that he had fallen into a deep sleep.
